Books for the Mind and the Soul
Welcome to the Veritas catalogue of new books for spring 2015!
This season, we are particularly proud to publish Walking on the Pastures of Wonder: John
O’Donohue in conversation with John Quinn. This poignant and inspirational collection
is sure to resonate with the many fans of John O’Donohue’s bestselling books on Celtic
spirituality.
Also very topical is Dialogue of the Heart: Christian–Muslim Stories of Encounter, which
seeks to encourage Christians at every level to get to know their Muslim neighbours by
focusing on the example set by the Monks of Tibhirine in North Africa.
We have two books that deal with the more challenging aspects of parenting. Finding the
Words: Talking Children Through the Tough Times by Dr Rosaleen McElvaney explores
how to approach difficult topics such as bereavement, divorce and sexual abuse. Raising
Emotionally Healthy Children by Dr Paul Gilligan explores how parents can promote good
mental health in their children, and what they can do when difficulties arise.
In advance of the implementation of the new primary religious education curriculum,
Catholic Primary Religious Education in a Pluralist Environment looks at the role of
Catholic religious education in an increasingly diverse society.
This year, the 1,400th anniversary of the death of Columbanus, we have a number of titles on
the subject of mission. Saint Columbanus: Selected Writings is the ideal introduction to the
life and teachings of Columbanus. Pilgrims and Prophets: Biblical and Celtic Spirituality
examines the lessons that can be learned from early Celtic spirituality, and Treasures of
Irish Christianity Volume III: To the Ends of the Earth looks at the Irish abroad and their
historical contribution to missionary activity.
For Christians seeking to learn more about their faith, we have The Four Gospels: Following
in the Footsteps of Jesus, which introduces the role of each particular Gospel.
Finally, for children, we have the beautifully illustrated The Story of Saint Brigid.
In addition to our spring 2015 list, we have included a comprehensive range of previous
Veritas publications, highlighting the key titles in all of our major categories. So whether you’re
looking for something to help you meet challenges or inspire you in your daily life, we’re sure
that there’s something here for you.

over a century’s experience consolidating Christian–Muslim
relations, Fr Martin McGee seeks to pass on some of its rich

monks of Tibhirine, depicted in the award-winning movie Of
Gods and Men, and includes first-hand accounts from the two

Drawing on the inspiring work of the Catholic Church in
Algeria and Morocco, Fr McGee shows the importance of
inter-religious dialogue, which is essential in breaking down the
barriers of mistrust and building a civilisation of peace.

Finding the Words
Talking Children Through the Tough Times
Rosaleen McElvaney
Finding the Words: Talking Children Through the Tough Times
is for parents or carers who are interested in how they can talk
with children in ways that promote their psychological wellbeing.
March 2015 | 9781847305954
128pp | 215mm x 138mm
Paperback | Parenting
€12.99/£9.99
We know that talking about our thoughts, feelings, wishes and
desires is good for us. Some of us are better at talking than
others. Some of us talk too much but say very little, while some
of us can’t get the words out or have no one to talk to. This
book emphasises the importance of self-awareness: how we need
to reflect on ourselves and the way we are with our children
before we can engage with them in meaningful conversations.
It emphasises the importance of knowing our own child’s
uniqueness – we, as parents and carers, need to tailor our
conversations, taking account of their individuality.
Drawing on the author’s professional experience, this book also
focuses on some key areas that may be difficult for children
to talk about, such as parental separation, death, bullying and
sexual abuse.
About the Author
Dr Rosaleen McElvaney has worked as a clinical psychologist in
public health services in Ireland for sixteen years. She specialises
in helping children talk about difficult experiences, and was
involved in the establishment of the Crime Victims Helpline.
She currently serves on the board of One in Four and on the
board for Safeguarding Children in the Catholic Church in
Ireland.

Heart Speaks to Heart
The Story of Blessed John Henry
Newman
Dermot Mansfield sj
Dermot Mansfield presents a vivid account of the life of
John Henry Newman, a man who was subject to much
misunderstanding and suspicion in the Catholic Church.
‘Heart speaks to heart’, the motto he chose when made a
cardinal late in life, shows that his whole life was interwoven
with a range of people, high and low, both Anglican and
Catholic. This book offers a fresh perspective on Newman’s
life, with contemporary Church issues and questions of faith
and unbelief never far from mind.

The Passion of the Lord
Reflections for Holy Week
Mary Bridget Judge
In ten pieces of blank verse, Mary Bridget Judge explores the physical and
emotional journey of the Saviour from the Last Supper to his Glorious
Resurrection. Centred on the themes of the five sorrowful mysteries, the
verses offer the reader a new way to experience the Passion of Christ.
Mary Bridget Judge offers a poetic, even passionate, reflection on the suffering,
death and resurrection of the Lord. Her words are an excellent example of lectio
divina of the well-known gospel accounts and will help the reader to prepare for
the joyful celebration of the Risen Lord at Easter.

Recalling Text and Verse Inspired by the Eucharist
Stephen Redmond
‘It is my hope that this book will convey something of the continuity of the
crowning act of providence, something of that witnessing, appreciation and
love.’ So says Fr Stephen Redmond in the foreword to this book, wherein
he tenderly and lovingly recalls some of the great statements that have been
written down through out history about the Eucharist. Retelling, in his
own words, passages from some of the great Christian saints and figures, Fr
Redmond displays his own gift for verse, making this book a wonderful aid
to anyone’s contemplation of the mystery of the Eucharist.
A warm-hearted devotional book steeped in faith which many will find
