Card Processor Announces Breach
Heartland Payment Systems,
the sixth largest processor of
credit and debit cards, has
announced that malicious
software has breached their
processing systems allowing
thieves to capture confidential
data from customers. This breach
could lead to unauthorized card
transactions.
It is extremely important that
you monitor your accounts daily
(through MFCU@Home) for
fraudulent transactions. Call
us immediately if you see a
transaction on your
Marine FCU account that you
did not authorize. Compromised
cards will be cancelled and
reissued.
This is a card processor breach,
not a Marine FCU breach. The
business merchant where you
used your card may have used
Heartland as their processor and
has been a part of the breach.
Safeguarding your
financial information is
Marine FCU’s priority,
but we need your help.
In this day and time you
need to be diligent about
monitoring all of your accounts
on a regular basis, to make sure
there is no fraudulent activity.
Car Shopping? Important
Things To Know Before
You Go…
In our current tough economic
times, many businesses are
closing their doors for good –
including car dealerships. Once
again, YOU need to be watching
out for your best interests. Here
are a few tips that can save
you money, time and a lot of
aggravation:
 If
you still owe on your
vehicle but plan to trade it
in ... take a good look at your
finances and see if you can pay
off the loan yourself. Many of
the issues, occurring right now,
involve dealerships that are
sinking fast and are not paying
off the balances owed on tradeins. This leaves lenders going
after the folks who, in good
faith, traded their vehicles. The
original owner has a balance
on the car loan that
needs to be paid. If
the loan is not satisfied,
the lender may have to
repossess the vehicle from the
dealer but the loan holder still
remains the responsible party.
It’s a big mess and happening
more frequently in our current
economic environment.
 Have
to trade with a balance
still on it … make sure you are
doing business with a reputable,
financially stable dealer.
 Buying
a used car ... insist on
seeing the title to make sure it
is in the dealer’s name, not the
former owners.
 Check
the vehicle history ...
there are websites available. Be
aware that there are fees. Avoid
a financial mess.
- page 8 - A Newsletter For The Members/Owners of Marine Federal Credit Union
 If
you run into problems ...
complain to the agency that
regulates auto dealers in your
state. File a claim against the
bond the dealer posted with the
state and, if necessary, hire a
lawyer.
Now may be an excellent time to
car shop. There are many vehicle
bargains – both used and new –
and financing is available. Check
out Marine FCU before you go;
pre-approved financing pays off
in many ways. And remember…
YOU need to watch out for your
best interests.
The tax return deadline is rapidly approaching.
Be sure to make your IRA contributions for the
2008 tax year on or before April 15, 2009. IRA
owners who are younger than 50 may contribute
a maximum of $5,000. Age 50 and over may
contribute a maximum of $6,000.
*Not intended as tax advice. Contact a tax professional.
Have a loan with us?
Please be sure to make your
payments on time. Failure to do
so puts you at risk of losing
access to some of your other
credit union services such as:
BOUNCE protection, line of credit
advances, credit card purchases,
and ATM or debit card access to
your accounts. Please contact
Marine FCU’s Collections Department
if you think your account may
become delinquent.
Keep Your
Accounts Active!
To avoid a “Dormant
Account Notice”
and related fees, cond
uct at least one
transaction (even a pen
ny deposit or
withdrawal) every 12
months.

workplace campaigns, and an outstanding effort in encouraging
employees to volunteer.

Way’s goal of $550,000.
We’re Just A Phone Call Away
When a call requires extensive time to resolve, the Member
Resource Center will make sure it gets transferred to the correct
department that can help you. For instance, you have a credit card
issue: the Member Resource Center can take care of the majority
of information you may need, but if your issue is going to require
research, the Credit Card Department will take over to assist you.
If you are calling with an issue for online service such as resetting
accounts, forgotten password(s), or answers to your security
questions, the Member Resource Center can assist you.
