Overview
the USB audio interface cannot be
ensured for all devices.
The "Bluetooth mobile phone
preparation with USB audio interface" (SA 6NE) and "Bluetooth
hands-free equipment with USB
audio interface" (SA 6ND) for MINI
enables suitable MP3 players, e.g.
the Apple iPod, to be connected to
the vehicle via a USB interface and
operated via the vehicle's own
input elements.
The devices tested by the BMW
Group as compatible are therefore
communicated on a regular basis.
Besides MP3 players, USB sticks can
also be connected to the USB audio
interface to enable the audio files
stored on them to be played. When
connecting mobile phones with a
USB interface to the USB audio interface, bear in mind that some types
of mobile phone do not allow simultaneous Bluetooth operation of the
mobile phone, which means that the
reception or placement of calls cannot be guaranteed.
The compatibility statements of
this product information refer
exclusively to new vehicles (date
of manufacture August 2010 and
later).
General conditions
The USB audio interface supports
the following device classes. Refer
to the information and tables below for details:

Apple iPod and Apple iPhone
•
MP3 players and USB sticks (USB
mass storage conforming to the
specification "USB Mass Storage
Class“)
•
MP3 players with Media Transfer
Protocol (MTP)
•
Mobile phones with USB mass
storage (conforming to the specification "USB Mass Storage
Class“) or Media Transfer Protocol (MTP)
•
It is possible to directly access the
stored audio files via a
playback list, but you can also
make searches based on musical
genre, artist, album or title.
The audio files can only be correctly
sorted and displayed in the vehicle if
the file information stored on the
MP3 player (e.g. ID3 tags) contains
Latin characters only. Only audio
files are played. Video files can only
be played back with an
iPhone/iPod via the correct
adapter cable (not with Radio MINI
Boost (SA 6FC)).

and USB sticks available on the
market and the multiplicity of
specifics that can vary from device
to device, flawless operation with
When used in conjunction with
Radio MINI Boost, only one Apple
device may be connected at any
one time
BMW recommends using Windows
Media Player (version 11 or
higher) for transferring audio files
on MTP-capable MP3 players or
mobile phones.
Other MP3 players and USB sticks
are connected to the vehicle by a
USB cable. Access to copy-protected
audio files is not possible. The external device is supplied with power via
the USB cable. Simultaneous connection to the vehicle's 12V socket must
be avoided.
Note: Due to differing general
external conditions, the charging
function cannot always be guaranteed to work for cable solutions.
From autumn 2010 onwards, a
corresponding intermediate
charging adapter will be available
for the MINI in order to optimise
the function.
The USB audio interface supports the
common compression formats MP3
(.mp3), AAC (.aac, .m4a, .m4b),
WAV/PCM (.wav) and WMA (.wma),
as well as playback lists, e.g. in the
M3U format. In order to guarantee
stable system functioning, the
memory of the end device should
not be more than 90 per cent full.
If MP3 players or USB sticks are to
remain in the vehicle, follow the
operating instructions for the device
in question. It is not recommended
to leave MP3 players or USB sticks in
the vehicle for extended periods of
time, since extreme ambient conditions can arise in the vehicle (temperature, humidity).
Always follow the instructions on
the following pages.
The "not supported" message displayed in the vehicle indicates that
an attempt has been made to connect a device belonging to a class
that is not suitable for use with the
interface.

Your mobile device can be connected to the vehicle in the following ways:

Direct connection (e.g. of a USB
stick) in the USB socket provided
in the vehicle. Check whether
your mobile device collides with
equipment parts. If so, we recommend using a USB cable
from the MINI parts accessories.
Using the USB cable supplied by
the mobile device manufacturer
Using a USB snap-in adapter
(only in conjunction with the
Bluetooth mobile phone preparation with USB audio interface
(SA 6NE)) available for selected
end devices. Besides the locking
and charging function, a USB
snap-in adapter also supports
the antenna connection and access to the music data.
Since various cable adapters and
snap-in adapters are available to
produce the optimum technical
solution, consult your MINI dealer to
ensure compatibility.

Apple iPod/iPhone
For Apple devices, MINI supplies
(depending on the configuration)
both cable adapters and snap-in
adapter solutions with which your
iPod/iPhone can be connected to the
vehicle.
Note about the cable adapter to
be used: Radio MINI Boost (SA 6FC)
requires the audio adapter
iPod/iPhone (part number 0440796),
while Radio MINI Visual BOOST (SA
6FP) or Navigation System Business
(SA 606) requires the video/audio
adapter for iPod/iPhone (part number 2179623).♦
Apple iPods are generally supported from the 4th generation
onwards. This includes iPod nano,
iPod classic, iPod touch and
iPhone (devices from the fourth
generation onwards are recognisable by the Click Wheel, whereas
older models have a Scroll Wheel or
Touch Wheel and are not supported).
In the case of Podcasts, a forward/back jump takes you to the
start of the next/current Podcast. It is
not possible to jump to chapter
markers.
When playing back mixed audio and
video playback lists, some mobile
devices experience errors in reproduction.
iPod shuffle can only be used as a
USB device with the FAT file system.

The software version of the iPod can
be determined by selecting the
"About“ menu in the main menu.
Further information is available on

iTunes can automatically update the
iPod's software, which may interfere
with the interaction between the

iPod devices can be disconnected
from the vehicle at any time.
MP3 player
sticks
and
USB
MP3 players with "Media Transfer
Protocol" (MTP) are supported.
Some MTP devices permit changeover to Mass Storage Class“ mode.
For details, refer to the operating
instructions for the MP3 player.
MP3 players conforming to the
specification "USB Mass Storage
Class" and USB sticks are supported.
With some MP3 players, it is necessary to switch on the USB connection
and activate the mass storage mode
(USB Mass Storage Class).
For information about this, refer to
the operating instructions for your
MP3 player.
After connecting the MP3 player
or USB stick to the vehicle for the
first time, information about the
music content is transferred to the
vehicle. This allows
convenient music selection based
on musical genre, artist, composer, album, title and playback
lists. When mobile devices with very
large amounts of data are connected, the music can initially only
be accessed via the directory structure.
In the case of an end device with
32GB of Flash memory, synchronisation takes up to 30 minutes.

When used in conjunction with Radio
MINI BOOST, directory names may
not be longer than 34 characters.
Using USB sticks with an integrated
hard drive is not recommended.
Tests have shown that sufficient
audio quality cannot be guaranteed
for this.
MP3 players and USB sticks can be
disconnected from the vehicle at any
time.

compatibility of the MP3 player with
the USB audio interface.
Due to the large number of MP3
players and USB sticks available on
the market and the technical differences between them, perfect operation in the vehicle cannot be guaranteed.

Mobile phones
After connecting the mobile phone
via a USB cable or with the corresponding USB snap-in adapter, observe the display on your mobile
phone. With most mobile phones, a
particular USB mode must be selected or set in advance (see table
column: "USB mode to be used").
Note that using a different mode
(e.g. PC-Sync mode) can cause
functional impairment with some
mobile phones. The mobile phone
should always be connected as a
Bluetooth device before connection
to the USB audio interface.
Some mobile phones support only
one storage medium in conjunction
with the USB audio interface, i.e. the
audio files must be stored either in
the mobile phone memory or on the
memory card.
Support
If the interaction between your MP3
player or USB stick and the USB audio interface does not work correctly, this can also be due to defective or specially encoded audio files
(e.g. bit rate greater than 256 kbit/s).
