SWITZERLAND
FROM THE ARTISTIC DIRECTOR
DO NOT BE MISLED BY THE SERENE SETTING OF
Patricia Highsmith’s home in this new play. The formidable playwright
Joanna Murray-Smith has infused this premiere with a level of intellectual
and psychological intrigue fitting one of Highsmith’s own renowned crime
novels. I am so glad you could join us for this breathtaking battle of wills.
As ever, working with Joanna was a joy. This collaboration is our third after
The Female of the Species and The Gift and I am pleased that the Geffen
Playhouse could be part of this particular project from its very inception.
With the support of the Edgerton Foundation for new plays, the Geffen
Playhouse commissioned Switzerland and hopes to bring many more new
works to full production in the coming seasons.
We are pleased to welcome director Mark Brokaw to the Geffen. We are longtime admirers of his work, and he has helmed this play with a combination of
passion and precision.
And, of course, a play this character-driven demands the best of its actors.
Laura Linney and Seth Numrich, two extraordinarily talented people, bring to
life with ferocity and elegance these unlikely companions. Joanna’s play pulses
with her gift for language, and watching these masters of the stage take on the
verbal sparring is nothing short of mesmerizing.
Highsmith, while beloved and revered for her novels such as Strangers on
a Train and the Ripley series, was infamous for her abrasive and reclusive
personality. These traits make her ripe for a fiery dramatization but Joanna
has taken great care in adhering to what we know of the real Highsmith. The
result is an intoxicating and sinister mix of historic accuracy and our collective
imagination. Regardless of what is fact and what is fiction, Switzerland is true to
Highsmith’s sense of thoughtful thrill-seeking from beginning to end.
Enjoy the show.

Murray-Smith. We know this gripping production, directed by the talented
Mark Brokaw, will draw you in and leave you on the edge of your seat!
Thank you to the Edgerton Foundation for generously funding this Geffen
Playhouse commission. Without such tremendous support, we would not have
the opportunity to see this new work come to life. We are forever grateful to
the Edgerton Foundation for their visionary leadership and for encouraging us
to take risks by creating new works.
Each season, we are able to further cultivate our new play development
initiatives in part to the success of our biggest fundraising event of the year,
Backstage at the Geffen. Join us on Sunday, March 22, 2015 for an evening
of laughter, music and never-before-told stories from the other side of the
curtain. This year, we will present Mellody Hobson & George Lucas with

SHINING A LIGHT
ON A DARK MIND
IN UNEARTHING PATRICIA HIGHSMITH’S INTERIOR LIFE,
PLAYWRIGHT JOANNA MURRAY-SMITH FOUND A WOMAN
WHO SUFFERED FROM “DEMONS NOT OF HER OWN MAKING.”
BY REBECCA HAITHCOAT
Rebecca Haithcoat: I love that you said in a recent interview,
“The act of writing is profoundly irritational” — it sounds like
something Patricia Highsmith would say herself! Creating a
play about a writer sounds easy — “write what you know”
and all — but was it?
Joanna Murray-Smith: No. First of all, writing about a
real person can feel very constricting. Even if it isn’t a
documentary, you want to honor the truth of that person,
so you are making the play jump through much bigger hoops
than theatricality and intelligence and entertainment — as
if those weren’t enough! Secondly, writing or even musing
about writing can be deadly dull, especially to writers. Most
writers don’t like talking about writing — explanation seems
to dilute the act. So I had to summon a writer and the nature
of a writing life without didactic exposition. The first draft
was weighed down with philosophizing. I had to peel off the
layers of literary naval-gazing and let Patricia “live” in the
moment.
You also mentioned that, “every play is about you.” How,
specifically, is Switzerland?
I identified with Patricia Highsmith in lots of ways —
despite, or maybe because of her ego! I have always liked
examining the dark interior lives of human beings, although
I could never presume to her acute sense of cruelty. I love

psychological thrillers. Like her, I often have the feeling of
being consumed by creatures of my own making. Like her, I
find my imaginative life at least as interesting as real life and
often more. I am also (like many writers) wracked by selfdoubt, a sense of injustice, a sense of racing the clock of
mortality and an overwhelming belief that our childhoods
either doom us or make us or both.
It seems like quite an undertaking, to make an audience
empathize with this difficult character — was it? How did
you manage it?
I don’t manage it. The actor does. If the actor brings
humanity into the portrayal, we begin to understand that
Highsmith, like all of us, suffered from demons not of her
own making. She had endured a very difficult upbringing
— no father, an over-controlling but emotionally distant
mother, a disliked stepfather and proximity to great
sadness and cruelty in her New York life near Rikers
Island. For a sensitive and creative child — even for a
tougher one — this early life would have a profound effect
on destiny. My own feeling about Pat is that her cruelty
was a defense mechanism to protect herself from the
suffering and damage she was well acquainted with — and
she managed to exploit that defense mechanism with her
powerful imagination and create a potent and dark body
of work, much of which is brilliant.
SWITZERLAND
You’re incredibly prolific. What’s your
process? Once you start writing, does
the majority of the play develop in just
a few sittings or over a longer period
of time?
No process. Random collision of life and
art! I think about ideas for quite a while
and then write a first draft very quickly.
Subsequent drafts are plentiful and take
longer. But everything that is good in the
finished play was born in that messy and
spontaneous first draft.
How do you go about writing a
commissioned play? Does it differ from
your other writing?
It is very different writing a commissioned
play that is built around an idea that
is offered to you and a commissioned
play that is your own idea. The flame is
already lit when it’s your idea. I told the
Geffen that this was the play I wanted
to write, so it was wonderful to have
their immediate support.
You and the Geffen have quite
the history together with the prior
productions of The Female of the
Species and The Gift. How, if at all, does
this history affect your writing?
Well, it makes me love the company
and feel at home here. It makes me feel
nurtured in a way that is rare these days. I
know in a very real way that this company
believes in me and my writing, through
good times and bad. That is invaluable to
a writer, because we spend such a large
amount of time questioning our own
abilities. It also makes me feel connected
to the Geffen audience. I feel as if they
have a relationship with my work now and
I am grateful to them for their support of
the other plays. All my plays get mixed
reviews — they always have — so I have to
pay strong attention to the audiences in
order to keep writing. If your audience is
there and they do not feel as if they want
a refund, then that is strength enough
to keep going despite the humiliation,
depression and poverty!
SYDNEY THEATRE COMPANY
As part of a co-world premiere arrangement between
Geffen Playhouse and Sydney Theatre Company, a
production of Switzerland directed by Sarah Goodes
opened in the Drama Theatre, Sydney Opera House, on
7 November 2014.
In 1980, Sydney Theatre Company’s first Artistic
Director, Richard Wherrett, defined STC’s mission
as to provide “first class theatrical entertainment for
the people of Sydney — theatre that is grand, vulgar,
intelligent, challenging and fun.” Almost 35 years later,
under the leadership of Artistic Director Andrew Upton,
that ethos still rings true.
STC offers a diverse program of distinctive theatre
of vision and scale at its harbourside home venue, The
Wharf; Sydney Theatre at Walsh Bay; and Sydney Opera
House, as its resident theatre company.
STC has a proud heritage as a creative hub and
incubator for Australian theatre and theatre makers,
developing and producing eclectic Australian works,
interpretations of classic repertoire and great
international writing.
The theatre careers of many of Australia’s
internationally renowned artists have been launched
and fostered at STC, including Mel Gibson, Judy Davis,
Hugo Weaving, Geoffrey Rush, Toni Collette, Rose
Byrne, Benedict Andrews and Cate Blanchett.
STC often collaborates with international artists
and companies and, in recent years, the company’s
international profile has grown significantly with
productions touring extensively to great acclaim.
Renowned artists Tamás Ascher, Philip Seymour
Hoffman, Liv Ullmann, Steven Soderbergh, Michael
Blakemore, Max Stafford-Clark, Howard Davies, Declan
Donnellan and Isabelle Huppert have all worked with
STC in recent years. STC has presented productions by
Abbey Theatre, Traverse Theatre, Complicite, Cheek by
Jowl, Out-of-Joint, the National Theatre of Great Britain
and Steppenwolf Theatre Company.
STC is assisted by the Australian Government
through the Australia Council, by its arts funding and
advisory body, and by the New South Wales Government
through Arts NSW.
