How do consolidation parameters differ from other geotechnical parameters? Why is the term “secondary consolidation” a misnomer and what is the nature of this phenomenon? What kind of geological stratum in Hong Kong are more susceptible to consolidation settlement problems? Was Karl Terzaghi the first one to propose the “Terzaghi’s 1D consolidation theory”? .….. The speaker will briefly address the above issues together with other interesting topics relating to consolidation. Prior booking is not required; this talk is free of charge for all society members and non-members. CPD certificates will be available for those working towards chartership (free for society members, $20 for non-members). About the Speaker: Ir Prof Philip CHUNG is a Chief Geotechnical Engineer of the Geotechnical Engineering Office. also an honorable associate professor of the Department of Earth Sciences of HKU. He is Ir Prof Chung has been working in the civil and geotechnical engineering field for nearly 30 years and has a wide range of experience which covers planning, management, education, research, design and construction aspects. He has been teaching in both the Department of Earth Sciences and Department of Civil Engineering in the University of Hong Kong on MSc courses for many years. Ir Prof Chung was the key personnel in drafting the Hong Kong Soil Testing Standard. He has been appointed by the Hong Kong Accreditation Services as a technical assessor on geotechnical testing since 1994 and is also one of the Hong Kong representatives to serve the International Society of Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering Technical Committee 101 for more than 8 years.
