Speaker: Miss. Trudy Kwong, Geologist at BMI Technical Consulting (Resources) Limited Topic: Geological Settings and Formation of Jade Venue: JL104 (1/F), Department of Earth Sciences, James Hsioung Lee Science Building, The University of Hong Kong Date: Thursday 28th May 2015 Time: 7:00pm to 9:00pm (duration est. 2 hours) Summary Jade has been widely utilized in the ancient cultures throughout the human history. Geologically, jade refers to two different kinds of minerals – ‘jadeite’ and ‘nephrite’, which have different composition, appearance, and properties. Both ‘jadeite’ and ‘nephrite’ are valued for their beauty, mystique, and romance all over the world. Although jade has been highly regarded in the jewellery industry, its mineralogy, geological occurrence, and formation are not fully understood. As a consequence, a number of other green-coloured minerals have been marketed under the name ‘jade’ but are neither a ‘jadeite’ nor ‘nephrite’. This presentation will discuss the geological origin of ‘jadeite’ and ‘nephrite’. General knowledge on how to identify and evaluate jade will be covered as well. Hand specimens of ‘jadeite’ and ‘nephrite’ will be provided for appreciation. Prior booking is not required; this talk is free of charge for all society members and non-members. CPD certificates will be available for those working towards chartership (free for society members, $20 for non-members). About the Speaker: Miss. Trudy Kwong graduated from the Department of Earth Sciences at the University of Hong Kong with Bachelor and Master’s degrees. She has been involved in different mineral projects in China and Southeast Asia during her career as a geologist at BMI Technical Consulting (Resources) Limited.
