Over 500 representatives from community football clubs and schools from around Australia descended on Etihad Stadium to have their photo taken with the 18 AFL Club Captains. GGFC was lucky to be apart of it - you can see our yellow away guernsey front and centre in this photo! The Golden Grove Junior Football Club will receive a Sherrin Football Pack thanks to the NAB Supergoal kicked by Troy Menzel in the Carlton v Geelong NAB Challenge match. Introduced in 2006, the grassroots initiative sees NAB donate $500 worth of footballs to an AFL player’s nominated junior club when they kick a NAB Supergoal - a goal kicked from outside the 50 metre line during the 2015 NAB Challenge. Troy was recruited to the Carlton Football Club in selection 11 in the 2012 NAB AFL Draft. Troy said he was pleased that his junior club was benefiting from his performance at the elite level. “Junior footy at the grassroots level is the foundation of the game - it’s where you learn to play the game and develop a love for the sport. I think it’s great NAB is helping local clubs, I’m sure the footballs will be put to good use,” he said. Since 2006, NAB has donated over $280,000 worth of cash and resources to junior football clubs through the NAB Supergoal program, assisting with the future development of potential AFL stars. It’s all part of NAB’s commitment to Footify Australia and grow the game. NAB has been Footifying Australia for over 10 years through NAB AFL Auskick, the NAB AFL Rising Stars Program, the NAB AFL Trade Period and the NAB Challenge Our own Trent Dumont debuted for North Melbourne last Sunday as they travelled to take on Geelong. It didn't take long for Trent to show some magic, booting an absolute ripper of a goal in his first match. Congratulations Trent! We always knew Modbury were going to be a physical opponent and the umpire let things go a lot more than we’re used to; at times it looked more like an AFL final than an U7’s match with some of the big body clashes! Our skipper for the day, Kyan Smith won the toss and decided to kick to the Water World end. We started slow as Modbury got the jump on us and our backline were immediately under pressure: Jordan, Harry S, Ajay, Ollie and the skipper Kyan defended well as our opponents pumped the ball in. We gained traction half way through the first quarter and started to earn our own ball. Jayden D in the centre carried the ball well for us in the first. At quarter time we spoke about the umpire letting things go a little bit more than he should’ve and for this game, we could get a bit more physical at the ball – and we did. The second quarter started and we immediately stood our ground and Jayden J booting a great goal from great evasive work out of the centre from Alby. Lachlan got plenty of the ball this quarter and there was some great run from Bailey and Adam. Riley R stood tall in a big clash in the centre of the ground and our back line again did a terrific job in holding firm with Hamish and Miller solid in defence. I must say Alby was a little unlucky not to be paid a mark from a high flying specky and Jayden J finished the quarter with 3 big sausage rolls!!!!! (sausage rolls = goals). At half time again we spoke about the physical contests and our boys seemed to relish in the tough stuff. With a big roar of WE ARE!!! The third quarter started. In the centre Riley Baker had some tremendous efforts and was courageous under pressure. Brodie had a great run from out of the centre with a booming kick into the forward lines. Harry S had some desperate efforts in the forward lines locking the ball in and Jordan Ruch kicked a massive goal from a great mark. Little Sammy Carter and Harry H had some unlucky bounces this quarter but showed they know where the right spots are. As the last quarter started we could sense we were on top and really started to get some great run out of the centre and a nice goal to Miller Jolly. Oliver and Ajay were exceptional in the guts with some brave plays. Again the back line held things together for us with Sam diving in and Harry H chipping in. There was some great team work all around the ground in the last quarter and we showed we weren’t afraid to take the game on and share with our team mates. The last major play of the day had Zak D take a mark on the boundary then centred the ball to Caleb Zanker who had to take the ball from a pack dodge a couple then take a shot for goal – only to be marked by who other than Zak D who started the play. He booted a well-deserved goal and showed that hard work pays off. The boys and parents should be very, very proud of themselves after Round 1. Not only did the umpire let the game go (parents please read my comments below on this) but even with all the rough and tough plays throughout the game we showed that our first priority was to share the ball amongst ourselves!! That shows tremendous team effort under pressure and again we showed them how to do it. Great work boys!! Who is Golden Grove Under 7 Gold? WE ARE!!!! Go Kookaburras!! Under 8 Green A wonderful start to the season for Under 8 Green on a perfect Sunday morning at Home against the new Golden Grove Blue team. It was a very polished performance from our boys and it was great to see the teamwork we have been working on at training on full display with lots of handballs, targeted kicking and goal sharing. A few important mentions to Mackye and Liam who each got lots of touches and scored goals in their first game for Golden Grove! And to our special guys Thomas and Matthew who did great for Blue - it was excellent to see you boys take everything you've learnt over the past couple of years and help your team get the ball on Sunday. Good luck for the coming season. And so to Green - a fantastic team effort demonstrated by the fact that 13 of our 15 players scored a goal! Rhys also got lots of clearances out of the centre and Noah was always around the stoppages. We're excited about the type of footy the team can play this season and look forward to an excellent 2015! Scorers: Zach 4.3, Liam 3.2, Jordan 3.0, Louis 3.0, Kam 2.2, Mackye 2.0, Logan 1.1, Blake1.0, Angus 1.0, Owen 1.1, Alex 1.0, Ryan 1.0, Jace 1.0. Under 8 Gold Under 8 Gold travelled to Eastern Park on a beautiful Sunday morning for our first game of the season. The team welcomed three new players for the 2015 season, with Noah French playing his first game for GGFC, and Kodi Landherr and Tyson Karklis playing their first ever game of footy, and all three performed well. The game started off nicely, with both teams in a tight tussle, going goal for goal for the first half. Thomas Glen had the ball on a string in the first quarter, having a solid game all round, culminating in a "mark of the year" contender amongst his career-best three goals. Owen Jarrad had an outstanding game, dependable as ever in the back lines. Matthew LeRay and Brooke Silby were excellent in the centre, and Noah French set up a number of goals in the forward line. The team hit their straps in the second half of the match, with a solid performance for the first game of the season. Goal scorers: Thomas Glen 3.4, Matthew LeRay 2.0, Braden Carpenter 2.0, Owen Jarrad 1.0, Brooke Silby 1.0 Under 9 Gold What a great game of footy our boys played on Sunday against Ingle Farm! I was extremely impressed by the competitiveness and team focus football. An exciting day for Xander on his 50th game saw him lead from the front attacking the ball hard and scoring from some long kick's on his left foot. From the start our boys displayed tremendous energy and passion for their first official game of the season! It was a hard contest with many players feeling the physicality from the U9 rules, more challenging for them than the previous years. They lapped it up and loved it! Talan, Seth, Josh, Xander and Tom played hard and showed tenacity and courage playing on after taking spectacular marks and awesome smothers resulting in some moments that made the crowd go ohhhhh and aaahhhh on the sideline. I am sure some parents were proud their boys played on! Danyle Dobie’s attack on the ball was sensational, it was impressive to see the ball come into our forward line and Danyle crumb the ball off the pack in full flight. Riley, Wyatt and Jayden were listening to instructions of holding position very well and were pivotal in ensuring that the ball rebound straight back to our forward line on many occasions. Jackson and Alex were always at the contest and were able to get the ball out of the pack with a handball to a team mate setting up the goals down the field. Tom and Brodie dominated the air and with large thumping kicks that cleared the opposition allowed for our team to create some space. It was great to see Tyson competing so hard and was selfless in making sure that he got the ball to someone in a better position. Daniel Hewitt and Issac were quick around the packs giving good run and put on some important tackles early. Luke took a couple of great marks and was very close to kicking his first goal for the Kookaburras. Overall it was a great effort! Special mention to Ana, Brett & Leah for the great work providing cakes and banners for the team. Go the ‘burras! Under 10 Blue The sun was shining bright for the first game of the season.... and so it should, the Blue Burras played an outstanding game full of run and carry, selfless shepherding, and enticing handball down the line to create wonderful passages of team-oriented football. The score board ticked over regularly all game as the blue burras setup cracking defensive zones. Defensive leader Jake W marshaled his troops right across the back line, offering no way forward for Angle Vale. Any loose entries were quickly turned over, with Tom (see pic below), Jayrone and Lachlan providing lots of shepherds, allowing our fast runners in Thomas, Brandon and new Gun Recruit Aaron to weave through traffic for countless shots. Some dash from Koby on the wings, as well as some forward magic from Jacob allowed the Burras to take full advantage of our running game, leaving hard ball nuts Waylon and Jack to clear congestion and work it forward. Max and Jake S offered some strong ruck work, leaving Jack and Brodie E to grab easy ball palmed their way to attack again. Over 8 goals were kicked by our Blue Burras, and all players showed plenty of promise – with Sam stopping any forward attempts, Callum bursting through to kick truly and Foxx getting some handy touches. A great start to the season boys, showing lots of hard work at training starting to pay off.... keep it up!!!
