Campaign For Local
Organic Food Production
Consumption
Supporting
sustainable food
production and
consumption
There are only about 775 acres of agricultural land in Hong
Kong, of which only 10% of the agricultural land is designated
for organic farming. Although the number of organic farms
in Hong Kong rose from 10 to 331 in the past decade, the
production output is still limited as demonstrated by the
fact that over 97.6% of our vegetables were imported last
year Therefore, eating local and organic vegetables is still
an unusual habit in Hong Kong. Our community partner,
Hong Kong Caritas, is supporting the local production and
consumption of food by launching a “Green Spot on the South”
campaign. HKU students will study and look into the issues of
organic agriculture and provide relative support.
Practicing sales, marketing and
community training
The campaign project aims to provide fresh, safe and locally
produced organic vegetables to the people in the Southern
District. Students will assist in selling organic vegetables to the
households in the Southern District. At the same time, students
will also be trained to provide customers with the knowledge
and attitude towards food safety, sustainable food production
and consumption.
Students will also offer trainings to new immigrants or
unemployed women in the community, thereby enhancing their
capacity. These participants
will form a “Green Spot Team”
responsible for selling and
educating households about
food safety and sustainable
eating. Students will formulate
marketing strategies, develop
business skills and acquire
interpersonal skills by actively
engaging local customers.
Students will learn about sustainability
issues on food, skills in running local
green business with the community,
marketing strategy and the method of
empowering local residents through
this project!
