In the first segment which aired on Jan. 16, CBC News Winnipeg uncovered the story of Trevor Levasseur, a customer who bought a used Jetta from a Winnipeg used car dealership and wasn’t informed of two prior accidents which totaled nearly $20,000 in damage. The Winnipeg dealer provided Levasseur with a Carfax report which reported no damage and Levasseur told CBC News that at the time, seeing the report made him feel confident in the vehicle. Six months later, when Levasseur visited another dealership to trade-in the Jetta, Levasseur was shown a CarProof vehicle history report which clearly stated the Jetta had been in two collisions in the last four years, resulting in $19,562 in damage. Levasseur returned to the original dealership and questioned why he wasn’t provided this information, but was unable to settle the matter. CBC’s second segment featuring CarProof ran a day later on Jan. 17 and looked at the efficiency of available vehicle history reports. The CBC News I-team ran a CarProof and a Carfax report on a number of vehicles across Canada and compared the findings of each report. CBC News found several discrepancies, including a 2010 Dodge Caravan from Saskatchewan where the Carfax report shows no history of accidents or damage while CarProof reports six incidents totaling over $17,000 in damage. “In almost all of our tests, CarProof had equal or better information than Carfax. Most dealers in Manitoba are opting for CarProof,” said CBC reporter Gosia Sawicka during the segment.
