2015 Girls` Guide to Summer Camp - Girl Scouts of the Green and

2015 Girls’
Guide to
Summer
Camp
Serving
girls entering
kindergarten
through
grade 12!
An Adventure for Every Girl!
Welcome!
We are thrilled you are considering Girl Scout summer camp!
In addition to cherished memories to last a lifetime, campfires
and new friends, your daughter will have the opportunity to try
new things, be a leader among her peers, enjoy the wonders of
nature, challenge herself and, best of all, have fun! Our camps
are open to all girls – previous Girl Scout membership is not required.
Our Day Camps (see pages 4-11) offer one- and two-week programs where girls may cook over a fire, write
and perform a play, ride a horse, build a fairy house, or take a hike. Girls learn teamwork and practice social
skills. New friends and weekly themes add to the fun.
Our Resident Camp (see pages 12-18) offers four-day and one- and two-week themed programs with the
added experience of living away from home. Girls develop confidence, independence and self-reliance as
they enjoy swimming, paddling a canoe, hiking with new friends, horseback riding, learning to cook over a
fire or taking an archery lesson.
Why Girl Scout Camp?
Girl Scout camp is unique from other summer camps in that it is GIRL-LED. Under the supervision and
guidance of our trained counselors, girls of every age are involved in the planning, organizing and evaluating
of their camp activities. Girls are empowered as they learn and practice creative thinking, leadership and
decision-making skills.
Whether you are looking for a day camp close to home, a resident camp or a weekend for the entire family,
this guide has the details you need to register for a summer of adventure, friendship and fun.
We look forward to welcoming you to our camp family this summer!

General Camp Info
PROGRAM
Girls will have fun as they try new things in an outdoor setting. Each
camp offers girls the opportunity to try traditional camp activities
which may include swimming, boating, arts and crafts, ecology,
hiking, overnights and cooking out. For many girls, Girl Scout camp
provides their first experience with archery, horseback riding, team
building, and STEM (science, technology, engineering and math)
programming.
SUMMER CAMP STAFF
Our summer camp staff is recruited from across the country
and around the world and includes college students, teachers,
mothers and others who enjoy working with children. Each staff
member completes an application with references and undergoes
a thorough interview and background check. All staff members
complete intensive pre-camp training. There are 2 counselors for
every 12 girls at camp.
HEALTH AND SAFETY
The health and safety of our campers is top priority for all staff. Each
camp has an onsite health director and follows all state regulations
and licensing. Each camp has a detailed risk and crisis p
plan.
REQUIRED HEALTH HISTORY FORMS
MS
S
AND MEDICATIONS
NEW!
A health exam by a licensed physician, nurse practitioner
i er or
physician’s assistant within 12 months of the first day of your child’s
session and proof of up-to-date immunizations are required for all
camp programs. Physicals and immunizations will be recorded in
CampDoc, an online health information database. Directions for
using CampDoc will be included in confirmation letters.
New this summer: All campers bringing medications to camp will
be required to use the prepackaged medication service provided
by CampDoc. Medications will be sent directly to camp in sealed
packages, clearly labeled with your camper’s name and dispensing
instructions. This will ensure that every camper will get the correct
medication at the correct time. Information on how to purchase this
service will be included in confirmation emails and in your CampDoc
account.
ACA-Accredited Camps
Camps Farnsworth, Abenaki-Mascoma, and
Kettleford are accredited by the American
Camp Association. This means that these
camps maintain high safety and quality
standards in site, program, transportation,
administration, personnel and health care. All
Girl Scouts of the Green and White Mountains’
camps follow ACA guidelines,
in addition to Girl Scouts
of the USA’s guidelines
and state laws, although
some are not separately
accredited by ACA.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
ESTIONS
Is financial aid available?
Our camps serve girls from many backgrounds. We offer assistance
for campers living in VT and NH who cannot afford the full price
of camp. Please send your Financial Assistance Request Form
(page 21) with the required documents and your completed 2015
Summer Registration Form (page 22) and deposit. This deposit is
refundable if assistance is declined or not awarded. Please contact
us for assistance if the required deposit is a hardship for your
family. Assistance can be used for one camp session per year.
What is the registration deadline?
You can register on our website or by mail with the form on page
22. Registrations are accepted up to two weeks before a program
begins, if space permits. All camp balances are due by June 1, 2015.
Any registrations received after that date must include payment in
full.
What is the refund and cancellation policy?
Deposit of $50 per session is non-refundable. After June 1
refunds may be made only for cancellations due to a serious
family emergency or camper illness, verified in writing by a doctor.
Registrations are not transferrable to another girl. No reduction in
fee will be made for girls arriving late or leaving early for any reason.
How do you ensure a positive camp experience?
Our community is based on respect. We work to create a safe and
positive environment for all girls. There is no tolerance for violence
(hitting, pushing, kicking), threats of violence, bullying, teasing,
verbally abusive behavior, or illegal drugs, alcohol, tobacco or
clothing that promotes drugs, alcohol or violence. If a camper’s
behavior compromises the positive experience for the group, we
will work with you and your child to correct the behavior and/or she
will be asked to leave camp without a refund.
Is bus service included in the cost?
Bus service is included in all day camp program fees. Bus route
information is available on our website and sent with confirmation
letters. Bus transportation for resident camp is available for an
additional fee.
Where do the campers sleep?
At resident camp, girls will sleep in platform tents, Adirondacks or
cabins. At day camp, during optional overnights, many of the girls
will sleep in Adirondacks or tents.
How can I prepare my child for camp?
Plan to attend the camp open house.
Review the family handbook and confirmation emails. These will
include information about:
•balance due
•packing lists
•daily routines
•homesickness •what to expect •special equipment needed
Can my camper come with a friend?
YES! We would love girls to share their experience with their friends.
Both girls should enter each other’s information in CampDoc. We
will do our best to place them together if they are registered for the
same program.

“Camp is the best. It’s fun and it teaches girls to be
strong, independent and not live like the image they
create today. Girls need camp. We can’t let people
rule our lives. Frankly, I’m one of the only girls in my
school who can light a fire. It teaches you all that and
it’s fun!” - Grace, 14

Who Can Go to Camp?
Seeking Qualified Camp Staff
Girl Scout camps are open to all girls entering
K through grade 12. Previous Girl Scout
experience or membership not required. Girls
become members when they register for camp.
Membership fee is $30 for new members.
Camp offers a unique working environment that defies the 9-5 work day
and offers opportunities in communication, organization, supervision,
management and program development and delivery. We are searching
for college students, teachers, health care providers and others to share
their creativity and specialized skills with girls in the outdoors at our day and
resident camps located throughout NH and VT. We’re ready to work with
colleges and universities to provide leadership opportunities which fulfill
community service and internship requirements. All staff must meet age and
application requirements, including reference and background checks, and
attend pre-camp training. Complete an application at girlscoutsgwm.org/
employment.
Visit girlscoutsgwm.org for more information.
Previous Girl Scout experience is not required. Paid staff members receive a
discount on their child’s camp fee.
Seeking Volunteers
We are seeking qualified adults to volunteer at day camp this summer. Volunteers
will work directly with campers (other than their own daughters) and full-time
camp staff to create magical memories at camp. All volunteers must meet age and
application requirements, including reference and background checks, and attend
pre-camp training. Previous Girl Scout experience preferred but not required.
Volunteers will receive free camp for up to two camp-age children. Contact Karen
Provost, [email protected] for more information.
