Waka Ama - Tahiti Trip
Gisborne Boys’ High School Waka Ama boys have had
a very busy and successful campaign over the last two
weeks. On Friday March 13th 10 boys – Wiremu Curtis,
Waimihia Maniapoto-Love, Joseph Mason, Morehu Riddell,
Leevi Samuels, Tawhao Stewart, Winiata Tarawa, Ramairoa
Tawera, Matenga Taihuka and Fawn White flew from
Gisborne to Tahiti to compete in the Eimeo Va’a – a 45km
race around the island of Moorea.
The trip itself was also a cultural exchange, we went a week
before the race and our students were hosted by College de
Pao Pao for a few nights. Going early meant we were able
to train with the locals each day on the sea. Our trip included
a day swimming with the sharks and stingrays and a day
trip to see the sights of Tahiti. They also did a four hour trek
up the Belvedere with the local students and we spent time
swimming with the dolphins.
The Eimeo race is made up of three different age divisions
held over 9 stages of various distances around the island.
It is a sea race which is held within the reef that surrounds
Moorea. Teams travelled from all over the Society Islands of
French Polynesia, three from Tuamotu (Hao and Makemo),
one from Bora Bora, one from Marquises, one from Australes
(Mataura), twenty seven from Tahiti, six from Moorea, the
Hawaiians and us. They all brought their own waka, which
travelled by boat – up to 2 to 3 days from Tahiti.
Waka Ama in NZ at high school level is competed over very
short distances – sprints of between 500 to 1000m in a river
or lake, so preparation for this race involved training great
distances both within the river and out at sea.
The conditions on race day were very rough with the effects
of Cyclone Pam. All teams started together at Cooks Bay,
visually separated into age divisions by colour, we wore
orange as we were in the high school 17 years and over
division. Each of the nine legs had all teams gathering at
the start line, some stages had a group start and others
April 2015
were staggered by age or the times from the previous leg.
When all teams had completed that leg they paddled over
to the awaiting support boats and changed teams. The
competition is mixed so each waka contained 4 boys and 2
girls. We were accompanied by Kelly Swann Anderson and
Puna Whakaata Maniapoto-Love from GGHS and two girls
from Moorea joined the team.
The race itself was very challenging, the weather providing
4 seasons in one day. We had to contend with pouring
rain, high winds, heavy swells and sun at various stages
of the day. Many of the waka flipped and in one stage, the
sea conditions got so bad that four of the Tahitian waka got
swamped and sunk. We paddled really well through all
conditions without flipping or sinking to earn a respectable
5th in our division. The under 17 team from Bora Bora were
outright leaders, winning every stage of the 8 hour race.
Our team was very well received by the people of Moorea
and were proud ambassadors of our school. We were
awarded medals at the prizegiving and have been invited
to return. We may plan to do this again in two years time
in 2017.

Principal’s Corner
This 2nd Newsletter for 2015 should reach you
during the 1st Term holidays.
As you can read in the newsletter we have finished
the term off with New Zealand Secondary Schools
Sports Council’s Summer Tournament Week.
We have had a number of teams away competing
in a range of sports.
Their success is not just measured in terms of winning or losing. This is very important for us, but I
cannot overlook the commitment that each team
and the individuals in the team have put into preparing for these top level competitions. Any team
does not just “turn up” on the day!
There have been many long hours of practice,
preparation and competition against other teams’
in order to get to the various tournaments.
Obviously for our teams there is also a very significant financial commitment.
I would like to acknowledge this commitment and
support from our young men, their parents/whanau
and their coaches. Without this commitment we
would not be able to live our School Motto, Virtus
Repulsae Nescia.
Whenever our teams or groups go away to compete or perform outside of Tairawhiti, I get letters,
e-mails and phone calls, about their behaviour
both on and off the competition arena.
Office Matters
Absences
If your son is absent, please phone the school to let us
know. DO NOT TEXT
Facebook
Thank you for liking us on Facebook BUT the wrong page
is being liked. Our page is the one with the red and black
crest and without the apostrophe in the word Boys.
Reporting
As you may be aware GBHS is heading towards paperless reporting. Reports will be published to the web portal.
Whanau will be alerted to the publication by way of text
and e-mail. The logon details have gone out with each set
of paper reports and will continue until we stop paper
reporting. However, some families cannot easily access
the net to view their reports. If you are one of those families, then you need to contact us so that we can compile a
list. At reporting times, we can then still post paper
reports to those who requested them. The objectives with
paperless reporting are to reduce paper consumption and
cost and to provide an accessible, electronic archive of
your reports. This means that your reports are always
available on line.
To be put on the list for paper reports, please contact
the school office : 06 8688159.
Uniform
Boys must wear black leather polishable shoes from Term
2 onwards. No canvas shoes or basketball boots. NO non
regulation sweatshirts, jackets etc will be permitted, only
school jerseys and school polar fleeces are to be worn.
These communications are always overwhelmingly
positive. I always share these with our young men at
assembly.
Probably 2-3 times in the time I have been Principal,
I have had to deal with behaviour which is unacceptable, against our School Code of Conduct and very
clearly stated in the Parent/Whanau signed trip Consent Form as possibly leading to serious disciplinary
consequences.
I do not act without getting a comprehensive written
report from Team/Group management and statements
from young men who have chosen to disregard our
School Code of Conduct.
My primary concern before acting is the consideration
of the commitment that coaches, managers, parents/
whanau and the team has made.
If an individual in the team/group has chosen to disregard and most certainly, disrespect, the commitment
that these coaches, managers, parents/whanau have
made, then it seems very clear to me that he should
not be in the team and nor should he have the privilege of representing our School in any competition.
Term 2 and 3 are even busier as far as Sports/Cultural
competitions are concerned.
We can be proud of the way that any Gisborne Boys’
High School team/group represents our School, their
team/group, their family/whanau and our Tairawhiti
district.
It is always quality at the level we expect and require.

Successes
This year our Prefects and a number of students
participated in Relay for Life. Thankfully we had
enough boys that we could have at least two boys
on the track at any one time even during the early
hours of the morning. I would like to thank Mr Ray
and Mr Cairns whose charming smiles and good
humour kept us going at 3 in the morning and Mr
Varey’s delicious food that kept our stomachs full.
All the boys that participated enjoyed taking part
and were grateful that they could help to contribute
to such a great cause and continue the Boys’ High
tradition of participating.
fantastic achievement and we wish Toby all the best at this
prestigious event.
Relay for life
Te Wai Coulston
Te Wai Coulston has been selected to attend this year’s
Sir Peter BlakeYouth EnviroLeaders’ Forum
There were almost 200 applications for this event and selecting the 50 successful delegates was not an easy task.
However, Te Wai really stood out. The Forum will take
place in Rotorua from 11 - 17 April and we look forward to
meeting Te Wai then.
This year, the selected delegates will join The Sir Peter
Blake Trust and the Ministry for the Environment for an
‘urban expedition’ through Rotorua and the surrounding
region, experiencing and learning about fresh water management, planning and eco-tourism. Delegates will also
have opportunities to meet and engage with like-minded
contemporaries, inspiring and informative speakers and
experts - including Sir Peter Blake Trust alumni, local and
national politicians, subject experts, business and community leaders.
Following on from the success of the Young Blake Expedition to the Kermadecs in 2012 and the Young Blake
Expedition to the Southern Ocean & Sub-Antarctic in
2014, delegates to the 2015 Youth EnviroLeaders’ Forum
may also be eligible for selection for future Young Blake
Expeditions.
Tangaroa Torrez and Orsym O’Connor
On Saturday 21 March the Hutt Valley Disabled Resources
Trust held its national inclusive event, the HVDRT TriAbility Triathlon (TriAbility) in Wainuiomata, Lower Hutt.
What made this event so remarkable, was the efforts and
skills contributed by our volunteers. I would just like to take
this opportunity to acknowledge two Gisborne Boys’ High
School students, Tangaroa Torrez and Orsym O’Connor,
who actively volunteered for the two days leading up to the
event and then again on the day of the actual Triathlon.
The HVDRT TriAbility Triathlon event team is extremely
grateful for their pro-active attitude and commitment towards the operations of this positive social change campaign.
The HVDRT TriAbility Triathlon is an event that supports
people with various degrees of physical, intellectual, developmental, neurological and sensory abilities. Both young
men worked long hours completing tasks such as registration administration, location set-up, site security, event
marshalling and support assistance for triathlon competitors. TriAbility supports a wide range of disabilities and
ages, so it was very refreshing to see them respectfully
interacting with all the competitors. Well done Tangaroa
and Orsym.
Race Unity Speech Competition
This year it was really pleasing as three of our senior students opted to enter this competition. Te Wai
Coulston, Hugo Robinson and Toby Andersen were
asked to prepare speeches of eight minutes in length
to address the topic. Big Change Starts Small - Itiiti
Rearea, Kahika Teitei, Ka Taea. The boys were pitted
against the top orators of the district and were judged
on toastmaster’s criteria by three esteemed judges including representatives from the Police and the Human
Rights Commission. During their speeches, students
had to refer to at least one of the two quotations below
and show that they had considered each of the three
bullet points:
1. He waka eke noa / A canoe which we are all in with
no exception (We are all in this together)
2 … all the members of the human family, whether
peoples or governments, cities or villages, have become increasingly interdependent … Hence the unity of
all mankind can in this day be achieved
(Bahá’í Writings)
3. OR students can share a proverb from their own
ethnic or cultural background that relates to the theme
• As a rangatahi (youth) of Aotearoa in 2015 how do
you think we have progressed as a nation since the
signing of the Treaty of Waitangi 175 years ago?
• If rangatahi/youth were to have a greater influence in
steering the waka named Aotearoa towards becoming a
more harmonious nation, how might they achieve this?
• What small changes can we make to address everyday racism?
Each of the boys spoke admirably and Toby Andersen
was adjudged the regional winner with Hugo Robinson
the runner up. Toby will represent our region at the National Final in Auckland on Saturday 16 May. This is a

Gateway/Careers
Career Pathways Department
The term has shot by us barely leaving any breath
in the room! Students have been motivated and
keen to explore all the new possibilities open to
them. We have been using the email system to
contact all our Yr 11, 12 & 13 students as well as
Facebook. If you want to get all the info about
Careers and what we are doing and offering, then
PLEASE “LIKE” us on facebook - Gisborne Boys
High School.(Make sure it is the one with the red
and black crest) You will then automatically get all
the updates on the cool stuff happening at GBHS.
It is also really important our seniors check their
school emails. This is where we are sending all the
information they need. This is how Universities,
Polytechnics, the Armed Forces, Police and just
about every training provider makes contact with
applicants, so it is a good idea to get used to it now.
University Trips
We are looking at taking a group of Year 12 & 13
students north – date to be decided. We will take in
Waikato, AUT and Auckland Universities. If you are
interested please see Mrs Jefferson.
We have also mooted the idea of a small group of
students (10) going to Christchurch to see Canterbury, Lincoln and Telford. We could also get one
or two over to Greymouth to check out Tai Poutini’s
Outdoor Education programme and possibly some
to SIT in Invercargill. Most of the trip will need to
be paid by the student and we estimate it will cost
around $500 each depending on where they want
to go. This will be early in August and we will put
students into lectures at the Uni’s so that they see
what their degree is going to look like and hopefully
accommodate them on campuses to see what the
life looks like. We would need a non-refundable
deposit of approx. $300 to cover flights early in May.
See Mrs Bishop and Mrs Jefferson for more info.
Careers Expo
We took our senior students to the Careers Expo on
Monday 23rd March. Most providers came into the
school last week to talk to smaller groups of interested students and many of our boys took advantage of this wealth of knowledge on their doorstep.
Yes
The YES programme, going for 5 weeks now, has
Thomas Rutene, Angus McDonald and Lucas Fleming involved and they have been going great guns!
The past three weeks have seen them working with
St John, NZ Army, NZ Police, Rural Fire, Coast
Guard and Mountain Safety. This is an amazing
programme coordinated by an amazing team of
volunteers.
Forestry Industry Big Day Out
The students who took advantage of coming out on
the BDO had a fantastic day. The industry really put
on a great day, showcasing the many careers avail-
able within Forestry and also had young graduates
and providers from Waiariki Polytechnic, Turanga
Ararau and Canterbury University on hand to answer
any questions.
Star
Learner Licence: Cost: $131.10 (included Licence
fee) Course 1 full, however there are 6 other courses
so come and see Mrs Bishop
Restricted Licence: Cost: $137.00 (includes

sessions for FREE. The Restricted Licence will start
Week 1 Term 2. This is for students who have done
a lot of driving and who are confident and competent
behind the wheel of a car. For more info contact
Mrs Bishop. UNFORTUNATELY, if we don’t get
some takers for Restricted, we will have to cancel it
for the year. PLEASE contact Mrs Bishop urgently if
you are interested.
First Aid: We will have 3 First Aid courses in Terms
2 and 3. If you are interested, see Mrs Bishop
Police Preparation: This course is run at the Wananga and incorporates an overnight stay at the
Marae. It is 14th & 15th May. We already have 7
students interested and very limited places. If you
are keen, see Mrs Bishop.
Barista: We are thinking about running a Barista
course in Term 3. See Mrs Bishop.
Gateway
Term 1 has been busy getting boys out on their
Gateway placements. We now have 31, Yr 12 and
13 boys out on work experience, one day per week,
ranging from jobs such as Plumbers, Builders, Electricians, Farmers, Forestry workers, Accountants,
Engineers, Pilots and a DOC worker. 13 of the Gateway boys involved in the trades areas, completed
a” Safety in the Workplace” course this term. Early
next term the Farming boys will do an ATV motorbike
course. The 3 Forestry boys have been attending a
10 week course at Turanga Ararau which covers all
the safety aspects of Forestry before they can go out
on the work sites.
Library
Kia Orana everyone!
This term has flown by and I am pleased to say that
lots of books have been going out and being reviewed
by mostly year 9 students. Come on seniors, those
books you read for NCEA English can earn you a draw
for a $10 cafe voucher! Just write a review and post it
in the drop box.
The library has new seating for the ‘Reading Room’,
also chairs and tables for the classroom spaces.
Thanks go to the Board of Trustees, Greg Mackle our
Principal and Graeme Hyde our School Property
Manager for making it a priority. Parents and whanau
feel free to come and check it out next time you are
visiting.
Have a safe and happy Easter break.

Fund Raising for Vanuatu
Last week a Mufti Day was held to raise money to help the
people in Vanuatu affected by Cyclone Pam. The theme was
“Island Style” and it was great to see our students and teachers support this venture with $1,500 raised. Our Vanuatu students were pleased and thankful to see the school supporting
their country in this time of need. The money raised will go
towards Lost Hope Restored - a Christian-based charitable
trust in Gisborne who are fundraising for a container to be
sent to Vanuatu filled with food and aid essentials. The school
will be holding a Quiz Evening next term to fund raise for the
families of our Vanuatu students.
Young Farmers Club
This term we have formed a Young Farmers Club at school.
There has been a huge amount of interest from all the keen
young farming boys! At this stage we have had to limit the
club to Yr 11-13 boys.
The boys have formed a committee.
Cameron Hudson
(Chairperson), Fraser Eddowes (Secretary), Sam Hudson
(Treasurer), meeting every Tuesday lunchtime. There first
priority is to fundraise for visits to places like Waipaoa and
Smedley Farm training schemes. They also would like to be
able to attend the Young Farmer Competitions.
On 21 March Cameron Hudson, Michael Bloxham, Jake Jones
and Michael Trott went to Greytown to compete in the Teen
Ag event at the East Coast Regional Young Farmers Competition. There were 16 teams of two from schools on the East
Coast of the North Island. We travelled the furtherest! Each
team did eight different stations and had to do things like pulling apart a horse bridle, naming the parts and putting it back
together again, measuring deer antlers correctly, straining up
a fence etc. The top seven teams went through to the final.
Both our teams managed to make it through to the final which
was a great achievement. In the final, each team had to construct a compost bin, work out the volume of compost that
the bin could hold and decide whether the 8 different organic
wastes that they were given were carbon or nitrogen based.
This had to be done within a time limit. The boys really had
to think and work as a team. Cameron Hudson and Michael
Bloxham came 3rd in the final and qualified to go through to
the Nationals held in Taupo on 4 July.
On our way to Greytown, we had organised a visit to Smedley Cadet Farm. We spent 2 hours there being shown around
the amazing facilities. Tom Goodhue and Terry Walters, the
Farm Managers
gave the boys
invaluable advice
about how to apply to Smedley
and what they are
looking for when
they select their
future cadets. It
was great for these boys to see and hear what they
need to do to have the best chance at being accepted
to this very popular training scheme. Last year they
had 81 applicants and accept only 11 each year.
We also had a quick look around the Taratahi Agricultural training Centre in Masterton.
Waka Ama Nationals
This year Gisborne Boys’ High School took four teams
– three J16 – Ruamoko, Whanake, Rukupo and one
J19 team – Turanga Tane to compete at the secondary school waka ama nationals at Lake Tikitapu in
Rotorua.
Ms Te Amo travelled to Rotorua with 17 boys and
were met with the 10 returning students from Tahiti.
Day one was the W12 and W1 events. All teams progressed to finals with Darius Apanui-Nepe gaining silver in the 250m one man.
Day two and three were heats and semi finals respectively. All teams progressed through to semis with J16
Rukupo taking the top time in the 250 and second fastest in the 500m semi finals, and J16 Whanake progressing with the fastest time to the plate final.
Finals were held on the last day with Rukupo contesting the 500m championship. After a good start the
team of Kereopa Ria, Winiata Tarawa, Joseph Mason,
Jason Kemp, Wiremu Curtis and Matenga Taihuka
dominated the race to win the overall championship
race. This is the first time our school has one this
division.
The second race was the plate final with Whanake
contesting the 500m. The team of Henare Maxwell, Ramairoa Tawera, Pa Tawhiwhirangi, Waimihia
Maniapoto-Love, Josh Pullar and Joel Watene had a
good race and placed third for this division.
One of the final races for the day was the 250m with
Rukupo taking the first lane as top qualifiers. As such
they were the last to leave the loading bay and when
they arrived at the start line the race commenced.
This put their waka ¼ of a boat length behind the others from the start but the team did exceptionally well to
gain 3rd in this race. There were 100ths of a second
between first, second and third.
A huge congratulations to all competitors who represented our school with pride and produced some excellent results.

Volleyball Nationals
The Senior A Volleyball team travelled to Palmerston North
for the National Tournament over the last week of March. It
is a young and relatively inexperienced team, however we
had been the top team in our Region and had played well
in patches. We were seeded 14th of the 65 boys teams and
our goal was to play to this ranking, although we knew it
would be tough to do this.
Senior A Volleyball Team: Gabe Te Kani ©, Andrew
Tauatevalu, Sam Kaloni, Luke Bird, Tu Waiti, Lee Tamihana,
Eli Reedy, Daniel Cole, Weston Lockley
Pool Play Results:
Vs Marlborough Boys H.S
lost 1-3
Vs New Plymouth Boys H.S
lost 0-3
We played NPBHS at Super 8 and lost but felt we were
capable of beating them.
Vs Mt Maunganui H.S
lost 0-3
As we often do, we lifted our game against top opposition
and played really well, even though we never seriously put
them under pressure. We lost in three straight sets but at
least we relaxed and started to back ourselves which we
hadn’t in the first two games.
These results placed us at the bottom of our pool and meant
we would contest Division 2 (placings 17-32).
Division 2 Pool Play Results
Vs Hillcrest H.S
lost 2-3 We started this game well enough and seemed to have the
game in the bag when we won the first two sets. The third
set was closer and the lead swapped several times, we got
to 24 first and served to win the match. The serve went out
and they won the next two points to win the third set. Vs Te
Puke H.S
lost 1-3
The boys were amped up for this game as a win would
still give us a chance at making a Div 2 quarter final. It
was another close game in which we were competitive, but
we were again guilty of beating ourselves rather than the
opposition beating us.
Vs Tikipunga H.S
won 3-0
Finally a win! These results placed us third in our pool,
more frustration and disappointment at missing out on the
top eight teams in Div 2.
Division 2 Play-off Results:
Vs Auckland Grammar
lost 2-3
We had seen Grammar play and we were desperate for a
win as it would mean we would avoid finishing in the bottom
four teams in Div 2 (especially as the bottom three teams
are relegated to Div 3 for next year!). We played reasonably
well and it was close throughout the whole game, it was
good to win the fourth set under pressure to force it to a
deciding fifth set. We lead the fifth set and needed just
two points to win the game, but again we faltered under
pressure and made poor decisions that cost us the game
– gutting
Vs Glendowie College
won 3-0
Just our second win in the tournament. This win meant we
would play-off for placings 29 and 30 overall.
Vs Lincoln H.S
lost 1-3
The stakes were pretty high for this final game, the team
that lost would lose the Regions seeding in the top 32
teams (probably the worst outcome possible as it would
haunt us next year when we again try to qualify in the top
32 teams). The first set was pretty even and although we
lost we were well and truly in the game. The fourth set was
again close but it gradually slipped away from us and we
had to accept that we would finish in the bottom three
teams in Div 2.
Final Thoughts
Reflecting on the season there was a lot of positives to
take from it; we had gone unbeaten in our Region with
a team that was very young (the majority of players are
Year 11 and the whole team should return next year).
However we were all disappointed with our performance
at Nationals. If we had won the matches against Hillcrest
and Auckland Grammar we probably would have been
happy with our final placing – and we were just three
points in total away from winning both games!
Super 8 Tennis
GBHS versus Hamilton 6-0 loss, Palmerston North 6-0
loss, New Plymouth 4-2 loss, Napier B 3-3 loss on countback, Hastings 6-0 WIN
Super 8 Tennis was played in Napier. A tennis tie includes
four singles matches and two doubles matches. Day One
saw Gisborne lose to eventual winners Palmerston North
and to Hamilton BHS. Conversation at the formal dinner
drew respectful praise from these high quality teams for
our play in these matches, but they are highly ranked nationally in Tennis and were too strong for us.
Day Two saw much closer matches and ties against New
Plymouth and Napier, whilst on the third day we managed
to beat Hastings BHS. Overall we played 30 matches,
winning 9 and losing 21. All players can be proud of the
Tennis they played at the tournament against very strong
nationally ranked opposition.
Our team finished seventh in the tournament but will be
ranked sixth in Super Eight as Rotorua did not contest
and were replaced by a Napier B side. A respectable result given the lack of interschool or interclub Tennis in
Gisborne.
GBHS Surfing Championships
Clean 2-foot conditions greeted GBHS surfers at Whales
Wainui on Friday. With a group of 20 students participating in the School Surfing Championships for 2015 and
with the overall level of ability being high, it was always
going to be a hotly contested event.
In the under 18s event, the division final featured Reuben
Mottart, Tom Dixon-Smith, Riaki Ruru and Colby Putnam.
In a tightly contested finalm, Reuben Mottart pipped last
year’s winner Tom Dixon-Smith by a margin of 0.5 points.
Riaki Ruru was third and Colby Putnam fourth.
For the under 16s, we had some familiar names as some
boys are young enough to enter both divisions. Reuben
Mottart, Riaki Ruru, Rangi Moore and Tom Dixon-Smith
found that wave selection was a deciding factor with Reuben coming out on top to clinch the under 16s title and a
rare double division win.
Mr Chapman would like to thank Mr Burns, Mr DixonSmith and the Gisborne Boardriders Club for their support.

to compete in the NZ Secondary Schools’ Mountain Bike
Championship. After a warm up ride in the Redwoods Forest on Saturday afternoon in Rotorua, the boys took on a
challenging course on Sunday morning in the Hunua Ranges, just south of Auckland. Racing against some highly experienced competitors the best results were for Mark Davis
who came 24th in the Under 16 category and Jordan Perry
who placed 29th in the Under 20 category.

GBHS beat Te Koutu 57 - 31
GBHS lost to Hawera in the finals 43 – 28.
Ryan Nepe showed great leadership and was a standout player along with Klay August and Freemin Te Whare.
Conrad Kutia and Mercy Bristowe made excellent contributions coming off the bench.
Junior A’s playing in the Premier Division:
After a timid start in their first game they improved and got
on to the high standard of Basketball and just how quick
the game is played at this level.
GBHS lost to Westlake Boys 70 – 17
GBHS lost to Napier Boys 68 – 26
GBHS lost to Rosmini 68 – 22
GBHS lost to St John’s by 15 points
Max Scott and Cole Sawyer were the outstanding players
for the Junior A’s. But the hustle of Jordan Mc Farlane
and Jake Noble off the bench has to be noted. Jordan
dove for loose balls on the floor and Jake played the best
transition defense of any GBHS player in the Tournament.
GBHS Junior B’s playing in the A Grade:
GBHS beat Paeroa 68 – 20
GBHS lost to Hauraki 66 – 23
GBHS lost to Napier Boys 77 – 10
GBHS lost to TKK Tama Wharekura by 20 points.
Niao Maru did an outstanding job as the Captain, especially for a Year 9 student. Sam Veitch, Khan Grayson,
John Hustler and Holden Wilson played well and impressed Junior A coach Darren Paewai. Many of the Junior B Team were playing in their first Tournament and it is
important that we keep developing players for the future
of GBHS Basketball.
Special thanks to Kui Morrell, who managed 3 teams and
Darren Paewai, a very good Basketball coach who GBHS
is lucky to have.
Senior Football (Soccer)
The competition starts on Saturday April 11 (in the holidays). If at all possible, please make sure your son is
there. It is hard to put teams together during the holidays.
Jubilee Scholarship Programme
Basketball
We took 3 teams to the Rotorua Tip Off Tournament, (the
Senior A Team, Junior A team and the Junior B Team).
This tournament is important as it serves as an indication
The Jubilee Programme has been developed for the
junior school Y9-Y11 in the aim of recognising the potential leadership ability students hold and harness this for
the future. The Jubilee Programme which is a relatively
new project can be seen as a lead up to the Senior
Leadership programme.

SPORT & CULTURE - Excellence outside the classroom
Athletics Sports
This year’s school Athletics Sports were held on Thursday 5th March. The day was a scorcher, particularly in the
morning before the breeze came up. Despite the hot conditions the boys got stuck in and the level of participation
was excellent. Field events were particularly popular with
a large numbers of boys attempting to qualify, those who
reached qualifying standard then competed for final placings. Thanks to Mr Fawcett’s efficient processing of results
we could keep boys updated of House points throughout the
day with a running tally which fostered excellent participation and competition.
No records were broken on the day, however there were
several notable performances. Reeftahn Brown was a
standout, winning the Senior Championship by winning in
all the long and middle distance events. Austin Brown won
the Intermediate Championship with an impressive display
in a variety of field events. Campbell Hall claimed the Junior
Championship by winning the sprints and the Long Jump.
Thank you to all the staff, students and supporters who made
this another successful and enjoyable Athletics Sports.

Term 1 Sports update
The first term has come to an end. Our sporting teams
have been competing in events, both locally and at a national level. We have had some outstanding successes
from our students, especially during the New Zealand
Secondary Schools’ Summer tournament week.
Highlights of that week came in the New Zealand Secondary Schools’ Waka Ama event where our U16 6 man
crew placed first in the 500 metre final and 3rd in the 250
metre race. Another highlight was at the prestigious Maadi
Cup Rowing regatta where James Brott placed 4th in the
U17 Single Sculls final. The final was closely fought with
less than 2 seconds between 1st and 4th place. In the
NZSS Triathlon event, Matthew Proffit placed 3rd in the
U14 race. Josiah Ney placed 6th in the U16 race.
At the NZSS Division 2 Softball tournament in Palmerston
North our team finished in 5th place. The GBHS team
also won the Gisborne men’s league, defeating club team
Scorpions in the final.
Our Volleyball team won the Poverty Bay/Hawkes Bay
titles beating strong sides from Hastings and Napier BHS.
Unfortunately they did not have a great tournament at the
NZSS Nationals.
Our Ki-o-Rahi team won the local qualifying tournament
and now will compete at the NZSS Ki-o-Rahi tournament.
This event will be played at our own Rectory field in Gisborne on 10th and 11th April. Please make sure you come
and support our team in their bid to win the Nationals.
We still have opportunities for volunteers to assist in coaching our sporting teams over the winter months, especially
in the sports of Rugby and Football at junior levels. If you
are able to assist in helping out your sons sporting teams
please do not hesitate to call Mark Jefferson on 8688159.
Finally we would like to thank all our coaches and managers of our sporting teams over the summer months. It is
a fantastic commitment that you have made in assisting
with our boys extra-curricular activities. We are extremely
grateful for your assistance.
