Conveniently located at the intersection of interstates 95
and 20, Florence is the perfect gathering place for your
next convention. With nearly 5000 quality hotel rooms
and seating for 10,000 at the Florence Civic Center, your

Florence Civic Center brings in the hottest shows, such
as Disney on Ice and Tyler Perry. While you’re in Florence,
plan to spend a day in the sand at Myrtle Beach, just an
hour away, or check out the excitment at the famous
Darlington Raceway, just a few minutes away.
Florence offers a wide range of dining, including several
national franchises, and spectacular local cuisine. There’s
always something going on at Francis Marion University,
whether it’s an art exhibition or a film screening, and
the Florence Little Theatre is a premier theater with a full
schedule of shows. Live bands entertain nightly, and the

Florence then
Florence began as a railroad junction in the mid
1800s. It was a major rail center for the movement of
men and military supplies during the Civil War.
Florence was also the site of the stockade to house
Union soldiers during the Civil War. Many soldiers
died of war injuries and disease, thus the Florence
National Cemetery [pictured on left] was established
in 1865. The first woman to be buried in a National
Cemetery, Florena Budwin, was interred here.
The War Between the States Museum contains
artifacts from various battles, camp sites,
photographs and household items from the 1860s.
In addition, there is a gift shop as well as a library of
rare manuscripts.
There were numerous Southern Plantations throughout the area back then. The last working plantation
in the are is The Columns, built in the 1850s using
materials found on the 1500 acre plantation. The
plantation home is an outstanding example of Greek
Revival architecture, a style frequently used for large
homes built in the Antebellum South.
Florence now
Fresh fruits and vegetables are available yearround at the Pee Dee State Farmers Market. Equally
enticing is Young Plantations, where you can sample
delicious pecans and purchase gifts for your friends
back home or a treat for yourself.
The Florence Museum [pictured on left] houses a
changing art gallery to include African Artifacts, an
Asian Collection, and Pueblo Pottery. There is also a
permanent collection featuring artwork by Florence
native William H. Johnson.
Francis Marion University is named in honor of South
Carolina’s Revolutionary War hero, General Francis
“Swamp Fox” Marion. The beautiful campus features
a nature trail, planetarium/observatory, and two
preserved hewn-timber slave cabins.
Lynches River Park features a river swamp with
towering cypress trees as well as sand hills offering a
wide variety of vegetation. Popular activities include
river fishing, canoeing, nature trails, and picnicking.
There is also a Splash Pad for the kids open during
summer, and an Environmental Discovery Center.
The Florence Veterans Park pays homage to those
who are serving or have served in our armed services
with a ‘Wall of Honor’ and several monuments for
the wars of the 20th century.

Weather
The weather in Florence is considered temperate.
Average temperatures in winter are in the 40s and
in the summer in the 80s. The warmest month of
the year is July, and the coldest month is January.
The annual average precipitation in Florence is at
44.76 inches, and rainfall is fairly evenly distributed
throughout the year. The wettest month of the
year is August with an average of 5.33 inches of
rainfall.
The most beautiful time of the year is spring when
the camellias and azaleas are in full bloom.
Florence’s recreation and natural gardens can
be enjoyed year-round, but if you take a trip to
Timrod Park or Lucas Park, for example, during the
spring months you’ll see hundreds of azaleas in
various shades of pink, purple and white.
To complement the plentiful array of flowers are
the many huge pines, live oaks, and magnolias
that are commonly draped with Spanish moss.

The Florence Regional Airport has provided
continuous service to the public for over 75
years. Florence Regional offers daily flights
by US Airways/US Airways Express, and is
heavily used for general aviation. The two
destinations served by Florence Regional

and Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta Airports.

The Amtrak Station in Florence was
constructed in 1996 by CSX, and is served
by Amtrak’s Palmetto and Silver Meteor
routes. The Palmetto is a 829-mile passenger
train route which runs from New York, NY
to Savannah, GA, and the Silver Meteor is
a 1389-mile passenger train route running
from New York, NY to Miami, FL.

The Pee Dee Regional Transportation
Authority (PDRTA) was formed in 1974 as
the first RTA in the state of South Carolina.
PDRTA serves the Pee Dee region of South
Carolina, which includes Chesterfield,
Darlington, Dillon, Florence, Marion, and
Marlboro Counties.
PDRTA operates a fixed route bus service
in Florence that is a convenient and
affordable way for an individual or group to
get around the city.
With PDRTA, you can plan a shopping and
dining trip to Magnolia Mall or make a
necessary medical appointment at one of
our regional medical centers. PDRTA can
get you to Drs Bruce and Lee Foundation
Library, the Florence Civic Center, or Francis

Since its opening in 1993, the SMG managed
Florence Civic Center has emerged as the
leading facility in northeast South Carolina for
conferences, meetings, seminars, conventions

square foot Arena (10,000 seats) is adjoined by the
well-appointed Pee Dee, Waccamaw and Santee
Rooms which together offer up to 5,300 square
feet or can be sectioned to be used individually.
These rooms adjoin the 15,000 square foot Francis
Marion Exhibit Hall which accommodates up to
1,000 people for banquets, 1,400 for meeting
set ups and up to 84 8’ x 10’ booths. All rooms
offer high speed internet service. The Civic
Center provides a total of 50,000 square feet of

At Darlington Raceway you’ll find all the
nastalgic racing history and memorabilia
your heart desires, as well as the
racetrack that’s been deemed “Too
Tough to Tame.”
The Media Center, located on the infield
at Darlington Racetrack, is the Raceway’s
main meeting space and seats 80-120.
The President’s Suite (seats up to 32) and
Darlington Raceway Stock Car Museum
(seats 80-120) are two alternative meeting
spaces. the Museum holds the National
Motorsports Press Association Hall of Fame
and plenty of classic racing cars.
One neat feature you can expect if you
book a meeting or group at Darlington
Raceway is a pace car ride around the
historic, egg shaped oval racetrack.

Southeastern Institute of Manufacturing and

The Southeastern Institute of Manufacturing
and Technology (SiMT) partners with local
industries in order to solve their training and
manufacturing technology needs. SiMT is a
“one-stop shop” offering training in a variety
of manufacturing areas, including quality
machining, rapid prototyping, fluid power,
robotics, electronics, maintenance, and
programmable logic controls.
SiMT can accomodate many different sized
groups, from 1200 lecture style to 800 banquet
style. SiMT offers a large conference center
(seats 1200), as well as an auditorium (seats
800), executive board room (seats up to 26)
and executive dining hall (seats 24). There
are multiple classrooms, computer labs and
CAD (Computer Aided Design) labs. Items to
accommodate parties and groups, such as a
podium, wireless microphone, LCD projector
or VGA connection for a laptop, are available
for rent.

Florence Little Theatre

The Florence Little Theatre relocated in
September 2008 to a brand new, 30,000+
square foot building in downtown Florence.
Aside from offering a variety of plays and
performances throughout the year, the
Florence Little Theatre also rents out their
meeting spaces to interested groups and
parties.
Their auditorium/lobby holds 200 individuals,
and their rehearsal hall which extends into a
beautiful courtyard will seat 125. There is also
a kitchen on-site for catering.
The Florence Little Theatre is located in a
“cultural hub of Florence,” in walking distance
of the Drs. Bruce & Lee Foundation Library,
Francis Marion University Performing Arts
Center, and the new site of the Florence
Museum.

The Drs Bruce & Lee Foundation
Library, part of the Florence County
Library System, is complete with a
boardroom that seats 25, children’s
programming room that seats 50,
seven independent study rooms, a
computer training lab that seats 20,
meeting space that seats up to 200,
and Founders Room that seats 40.
The Library is state-of-the-art,
featuring wireless internet, digital
projectors, whiteboards, and
televisions with VHS/DVD players.
The larger meeting spaces include
a kitchenette, as well as a podium,
laptop and sound system.

The Cottage at Francis Marion University

The Cottage was constructed in 2003 and serves
as a meeting place for faculty, staff, alumni and
guests of Francis Marion University. Located on the
grounds of the University, The Cottage consists of
two meeting spaces, two large guest suites with
private bathrooms, and a library and bar area.
The Hendrick Room can seat 60 people for
a meeting or dinner, and a smaller meeting
space on the south wing of The Cottage can
accommodate 12.
Meetings or parties that are held at The Cottage
are catered by Sodexho Campus Services, the
university’s dining service provider. Sodexho can
also provide a bartender if needed.
Individuals or organizations interested in booking
The Cottage can rent the entire facility or a single
room.

Lynches River County Park

Lynches River County Park is a popular day park in the
Pee Dee Region of South Carolina where individuals,
families and groups participate in fishing, canoeing
and picnicking. There are also several nature trails as
well as a dozen geocaches.
The 676 acre parcel includes a multi-purpose
community building (capacity of 400), the
Environmental Discovery Center, picnic areas (can
be reserved), splash pad, five outdoor education
stations, two RV sites with electrical and water, and
two cabins.
The Community Building is 11,000 square feet and
can accommodate groups of 20-400 people.
The Community Building permits up to 3 groups
simultaneously.
Although the Environmental Discovery Center can not
be reserved or closed for private meetings, its facilities
offer the public natural and scientific exhibits that are
ever-changing. There is a Tree Top Canopy Walk, a
Map Table (back lit topographic map of the park and
river system), and a Nature Lab Trading Area where
you can expand your rock or insect collections.

FMU Performing Arts Center

The Francis Marion University (FMU) Performing Arts Center, an
estimated 61,000 square foot facility, opened in September
2011. Their opening gala weekend featured GRAMMY award
winning songstresses Judy Collins and Roberta Flack. This facility
houses an academic wing for the Department of Fine Arts, and
is a new home for the many art-related programs offered by
the university.
The FMU Performing Arts Center includes a main auditorium,
accommodating 900 individuals, with a fly tower and a 100seat flexible Black Box space. The floor plan includes control
rooms for lighting and sound operation, support area for
technical staff, storage spaces, box office, lounge areas for
artists, a catering kitchen, several dressing rooms, and a loading
dock that can accommodate two semi-trucks. There are also
two small practice rooms and a medium-sized rehearsal room.
The main auditorium consists of 650 seats on the orchestra
level and 250 seats in the balcony and box seating. Acoustical
panels and drapes on the wall provide the best conditions
possible for both live and recorded sound. Both the mainstage
and the black box will be used for various musical, theatrical
and dance productions.
Included in the construction is the BB&T Amphitheatre and the
Beverly Hazelwood and Starr Ward Garden Courtyard. The
amphitheatre will accommodate 500 individuals.

in downtown Florence near the Drs. Bruce & Lee Foundation

The Palmetto Room is a banquet room/event venue
located in the heart of Florence. The Palmetto Room
is the perfect place for special occasions and events,
such as wedding receptions, rehearsal dinners,
bridal/baby showers, graduation parties, birthdays,
anniversaries, etc. The tables and chairs may be dressed
in any way to suit your special occasion.
The Palmetto Room can accommodate 100 people for
a seated event and 125 people standing.

If you don’t know who Shoney Bear® is, you should stop
in at a Shoney’s restaurant in Florence where they’ve
been serving families all over for 60 years.
Shoney’s is famous for its multiple buffets and one-of-akind strawberry pie. They offer a breakfast and lunch/
dinner buffet as well as special buffets like brunch or
seafood. They also offer a plentiful cold bar where
you can make your very own strawberry shortcake or
customize a fresh salad with all the fixings.
A typical Shoney’s breakfast can include fluffy,
buttermilk pancakes, fresh fruit and biscuits with sausage
gravy. You can even have eggs “your way” straight
from the kitchen to your table. For lunch, dive into
cubed steak with peppers and onions, golden fried

The Magnolia Dining Room offers southern favorites such

world-class, multi-purpose venues, collegiate and citycounty, for a wide variety of sports as well as a beautiful
landscape for cycling and road races. The Pee Dee Rivers
are great for canoeing and kayaking.
The star of Florence’s sports facilities is Freedom Florence
Recreation Complex covering 126 acres in the east
central city. The complex offers nine championship caliber
softball fields, four multi-purpose fields, youth softball
complex, gymnastics center, walking trails and a five acre
lake. The championship softball facilities each feature
seating for 500 spectators, computerized scoreboards,
320 foot fences and metal halide lighting. The three story
control tower contains a press box, full service concession
stand, restrooms, first aid and a well stocked pro shop. Five
covered picnic areas and a children’s playground are
adjacent to the control tower.
The Florence Civic Center is the largest convention and
entertainment facility in northeast South Carolina and is
host to many sports events’ grand opening ceremonies.
The facility provides a 10,000 seat arena and 50,000
square feet of convention and exhibition space with full
concessions and catering.
Florence offers over 40 parks and recreation fields which
provide a variety of facilities. Beautiful Timrod Park has 14
lighted tennis courts for tournament play. The park also
features walking and nature trails, gardens and gazebo, a
playground and covered picnic area.
Francis Marion University, on the eastern edge of the city,
provides several athletic facilities. The university competes
in the NCAA Division I in men’s golf and women’s soccer,
and is a member of the NCAA Division II in men’s &
women’s basketball, men’s soccer, cross country, golf,
softball and baseball, tennis and volleyball. The $11.1
million dollar Griffin Athletics Complex, constructed in
2012, is state of the art and brings baseball, softball and
soccer to one dynamite central location.
The Dr. Eddie Floyd Florence Tennis Center boasts 24
Hard Courts and 6 Hydro Clay courts, and is one of South
Carolina’s Premier Tennis facilities.
The Florence area also has more than 30 challenging
and well manicured golf courses available for group and
tournament play.
