Friday, June 12, 2015 Page 2 GREAT MEADOWS REGIONAL SCHOOL DISTRICT NEWS As the school year comes to an end and we start preparing for September the nurses have some reminders. First if your child is taking medication at school please arrange with your school nurse to pick up any extra pills before the last day of school, if we have exact count and you do not need the bottle back we will dispose of the bottle. If your child has an inhaler or epi-pen at school we will send them home with your student on the last day or so of school. If your child will need medication, inhalers, or an epi-pen in September the paperwork will be mailed/sent home so that you can have it completed by your doctor over the summer and return before start of the school year. If your child will be starting 6th grade in September they are required to receive the meningococcal and T-dap vaccines prior to the first day of school. The exception to that is if their 11th birthday is after the start of the school year, then they need to provide a written doctors note with the date of the appointment. The form for the vaccines was sent home in January. If you need another form, please contact Mrs. DeCostanza or Mrs. Wilson for a new one. (or Form is available on Page 5.) Lastly, if your child goes to school at GMMS and they are planning to run Cross Country in September or participate in any Middle School Intramural Sport they will need to have a sport physical completed, Cross Country ones will be due the first week of school. The physical forms needed are under Nurse’s Office on the GMMS website. Student Dress As the season changes, students are anxious to rush into summer attire. Please remember to check that your children have dressed appropriately before they leave in the morning. Please be sure that students do not wear the following: Extremely low-cut, tight-fitting or transparent clothes; bare midriffs; suggestive clothing; and spaghetti straps. Straps must be at least three finger-widths (adult-fingers) across. Skirts, dresses and shorts that are higher than mid-thigh. (Skirt length must be no shorter than 3 inches above the kneecap and shorts must be no more than 5 inches above the kneecap.) No clothing imprinted with vulgar, profane and doublemeaning pictures or slogans. No ripped or torn clothing or clothing with holes in it. Unsafe footwear (backless shoes, rubberflip-flops, open-toes, etc.) Remember to keep your kids actively involved in home management through the summer. Number sense, communication skills, as well as critical thinking skills are all a part of daily life. Encourage your kids to read for at least 15 minutes a day and participate in nonelectronic supported activities. There’s much to explore in Great Meadows. Have a wonderful and enjoyable summer. Remember that children run on the playground – sneakers are preferred over sandals and should be worn every day. The Department of Health and Senior Services has adopted the following to begin September 1, 2008: Students born on or after January 1, 1997 and entering Grade 6 will be required to receive a booster Tdap (tetanus, diphtheria, and pertussis) vaccine. This requirement is designed to help reduce the number of outbreaks of pertussis (whooping cough) in previously vaccinated children in the 10-19 year age bracket. Students born on or after January 1, 1997 and entering Grade 6 will be required to receive one dose of a meningococcal vaccine to reduce the risk of bacterial meningitis. You will need to provide written documentation of the administration of these vaccines by the first day of school in September for continued attendance in school. The goal of this early notification is to provide you with adequate time in which to accomplish this. If you do not have health insurance or your health insurance does not cover immunizations, you may contact the Warren County Public Health Nurses to arrange for low cost immunizations. The public health nurses are located in Washington and the phone number is 908 689-6000. The following website will provide you with many answers to the questions you may have regarding these immunizations: http://www.cdc.gov/vaccines/pubs/vis/default.htm.
