A GUIDE FOR OUT-OF-STATE STUDENTS 07 ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS The University of Alabama employs a competitive admission process that includes reviewing and evaluating each application on an individual basis for an applicant’s abilities as a student and a scholar. Decisions about the potential for your academic success at UA are based on your performance on the ACT and/or SAT, your high-school grade point average, and your high-school course schedule. (For example: A student with a 21 ACT or 1000 SAT [critical reading and math scores only] along with a cumulative GPA of 3.0 should be successful at the University.) The writing section of either the ACT or SAT is required. The writing score will be used as part of UA’s holistic review of each applicant. We are looking for students who show a commitment to academics and who welcome the robust exchange of ideas that occurs within a diverse and inclusive learning environment. Typically, the number of applications received exceeds the number of spaces available in the freshman class. In terms of educational preparation, the college preparatory curriculum minimum unit requirements for regular admissions are: 4 units of English 4 units of social sciences, including world history or a comparable course 3 units of mathematics (must include algebra I, algebra II, and one unit of either geometry, trigonometry, or calculus) 3 units of natural sciences, including two courses with lab components 1 unit of foreign language 5 additional units of academic courses (We recommend courses in fine arts or computer literacy, with additional courses in mathematics, natural sciences, and foreign language.) Students who exceed the minimum number of units in math, natural sciences, or foreign language will be given additional consideration. 08 What is a Crimson Tide? Here you’ll interact with a diverse community of students and create a network of friends and classmates within your residence hall. You’ll benefit from a support structure of resident advisers and freshman advisers who will assist you in your transition to the University and to living away from home. We encourage you to become an active participant in your new living community and to take advantage of the exciting campus life at the Capstone. 22 APPLYING FOR HOUSING You can complete the online housing application at housing.ua.edu after you are admitted to the University and have paid the freshman enrollment deposit. The preferred housing application deadline is APRIL 1, but students are encouraged to apply as soon as they are able in order to maximize their housing choices. Students with a medical need requiring special accommodations should submit medical documentation to Housing and Residential Communities by MARCH 1. FRESHMAN RESIDENCY PROGRAM At UA, we are committed to providing our students with a comprehensive educational experience. In recognition of the value of a blended academic and residency experience associated with on-campus living, all firstyear undergraduate students are required to live in campus residence halls, unless otherwise exempt from this requirement. Students who will live in the primary residence of a parent or guardian may be exempt from the freshman residency program. HOUSING OPTIONS The housing assignment process is based on date of housing application. In order to maximize your options, and maybe choose your own room, you will want to apply for housing as soon as possible after admission. As you consider your on-campus options, here are some factors to consider: • Do you want a single-gender or co-ed hall? • Are you interested in a living-learning community in which your residence hall is tied to your college or academic interest? • Do you have a preferred roommate? • Which location do you prefer? • Which option fits your family’s budget? Be sure to talk to your family and potential roommates about your housing preferences.
