ADMISSION
REQUIREMENTS
The University of Alabama employs a competitive
admission process that includes reviewing and
evaluating each application on an individual basis
for an applicant’s abilities as a student and a scholar.
Decisions about the potential for your academic
success at UA are based on your performance on the
ACT and/or SAT, your high-school grade point average,
and your high-school course schedule. (For example:
A student with a 21 ACT or 1000 SAT [critical reading
and math scores only] along with a cumulative GPA of
3.0 should be successful at the University.) The writing
section of either the ACT or SAT is required. The writing
score will be used as part of UA’s holistic review of each
applicant.
We are looking for students who show a commitment
to academics and who welcome the robust exchange of
ideas that occurs within a diverse and inclusive learning
environment. Typically, the number of applications
received exceeds the number of spaces available in the
freshman class.
In terms of educational preparation, the college
preparatory curriculum minimum unit requirements
for regular admissions are:

4 units of English

4 units of social sciences, including world
history or a comparable course

3 units of mathematics (must include algebra
I, algebra II, and one unit of either geometry,
trigonometry, or calculus)

3 units of natural sciences, including two
courses with lab components

1 unit of foreign language

5 additional units of academic courses (We
recommend courses in fine arts or computer
literacy, with additional courses in mathematics,
natural sciences, and foreign language.)
Students who exceed the minimum number of units
in math, natural sciences, or foreign language will be
given additional consideration.

What is a Crimson Tide?
The nickname for UA’s sports teams has been around since 1907, when
a sportswriter likened the football team, entering the field in signature
crimson jerseys, to a flood of crimson or a “Crimson Tide.”

What is a capstone?
The University of Alabama has been known as “The Capstone” since
President George H. Denny (Denny Chimes, Bryant-Denny Stadium) used
the phrase in 1913 to describe our place in public education in our state.
What is a capstone? The Merriam-Webster Collegiate Dictionary, Tenth
Edition says, “the high point; crowning achievement.” We agree!

PAYMENT PLANS
THE BAMA PLAN
Bama’s Affordable Monthly Alternative Plan is a monthly budget approach to paying tuition, college/course
fees, residence hall charges, Dining Dollars, campus meal plan and parking decal costs for the academic

HONORS COLLEGE
honors.ua.edu
The University of Alabama’s Honors
College attracts some of the nation’s
most promising students, from the
state of Alabama and beyond. Founded
in 2003, the program offers smaller,
specialized classes taught by some
of the most renowned professors on
campus. Honors College students receive
registration priority and mentoring as
they pursue specialized opportunities in
educational experience, undergraduate
research, cultural interaction and civic
responsibility.
Qualifying for Honors College
Students may apply to the Honors College after they have
been admitted to UA. Admission to the Honors College
requires a minimum of 28 ACT or 1250 SAT and a minimum
high school GPA of 3.5.
20
Computer-Based Honors Program
honors.ua.edu/computer-based-honors-program/
Cited by the National Institute of Education as one of the six most intriguing honors
programs in the nation, CBHP was the first university-wide undergraduate research
program in America. Outstanding students majoring in any field work one-on-one with
professors while applying computing technology to a research project in their major field
of study. Each year, approximately 40 students are chosen to become a part of the CBHP.
University Fellows Experience
honors.ua.edu/university-fellows-experience/
The University Fellows Experience is a community of elite scholars from diverse disciplines
who share a similar passion for being change agents through their commitment to
leadership and service. Mentored by top professors, supported by their UFE peers, and
stimulated by world-class experts in many disciplines, University Fellows enjoy the richest
of college educations, create enduring personal cultures of learning, and embrace service
to others as a guiding priority. Approximately 25 students are selected to be part of UFE
each year.

UA HOUSING
housing.ua.edu
Living on campus is the key to a rich experience at UA. Campus living
puts you at the heart of the University, offering a variety of residence halls
to suit different personalities and needs. Here you’ll interact with a diverse
community of students and create a network of friends and classmates
within your residence hall. You’ll benefit from a support structure of
resident advisers and freshman advisers who will assist you in your
transition to the University and to living away from home. We encourage
you to become an active participant in your new living community and to
take advantage of the exciting campus life at the Capstone.
22
APPLYING FOR HOUSING
You can complete the online housing application at
housing.ua.edu after you are admitted to the University
and have paid the freshman enrollment deposit. The
preferred housing application deadline is APRIL 1, but
students are encouraged to apply as soon as they are able
in order to maximize their housing choices. Students with
a medical need requiring special accommodations should
submit medical documentation to Housing and Residential
Communities by MARCH 1.
FRESHMAN RESIDENCY PROGRAM
At UA, we are committed to providing our students with
a comprehensive educational experience. In recognition
of the value of a blended academic and residency
experience associated with on-campus living, all firstyear undergraduate students are required to live in
campus residence halls, unless otherwise exempt from this
requirement. Students who will live in the primary residence
of a parent or guardian may be exempt from the freshman
residency program.
HOUSING OPTIONS
The housing assignment process is based on date of
housing application. In order to maximize your options, and
maybe choose your own room, you will want to apply for
housing as soon as possible after admission.
As you consider your on-campus options, here are some
factors to consider:
• Do you want a single-gender or co-ed hall?
• Are you interested in a living-learning community in
which your residence hall is tied to your college or
academic interest?
• Do you have a preferred roommate?
• Which location do you prefer?
• Which option fits your family’s budget?
Be sure to talk to your family and potential roommates
about your housing preferences.

23
BAMA DINING
bamadining.ua.edu
In recognition of the value of the living-learning
experience, UA requires first-year students to
participate in the First Year Experience Meal Plan.
UA is committed to providing its students with
a comprehensive educational experience and
believes that for most first-year students,
on-campus dining has numerous educational,
social and dietary benefits. Studies of college
students across the nation consistently show that
students who eat and live on campus are more
involved, have higher grade point averages and
are more likely to graduate than students living
at home or off campus.
24
Dining on the meal plan
UA students can use meal plans at three all-you-care-to-eat food
service locations around campus — Burke Dining Hall, Lakeside
Dining Hall and Fresh Food Company. All meal plans also can be
used for lunch at Bryant Dining in Bryant Hall.

25
STUDENT LIFE
thesource.ua.edu
The college experience is about more than what happens in
the classroom. To make the most of your time at UA, take
full advantage of the opportunities available, explore your
campus community and get involved.
Student organizations start at The Source
Whether you are interested in Greek Life, campus ministries,
music, art, politics, sports, community service or any number
of other activities, The Source can put you in touch. Take
advantage of “Get on Board Day” at the first of the fall and
spring semesters to find out more about student groups,
meet members and see what different groups have to offer.
With more than 450 registered student organizations on
campus there is a place that’s right for you.
26
The healthy campus
Located on the east side of campus, the 200,000 square-foot Student
Recreation Center includes two gyms, nine multipurpose courts, weight
machines, jogging track, climbing wall, cardio area, four-lane indoor
swimming pool, dry and steam saunas, 12 lighted tennis courts, four
aerobics rooms, eight racquetball courts, a spin studio, and a squash
court. The outdoor aquatic area features a lazy river, lap swim and
large water park-type slide.
On the north side of campus, the brand new Student Center at
Presidential Village is a 133,000-square foot recreation facility,
featuring a 37-foot rock climbing wall, basketball courts, exercise
studios, personal training area and cardio and strength equipment.
