Elementary School Students
We are continuing our exploration of places in our community where our church may live out God’s love through serving people in need. As part of this effort, Pastor Linda, Kristy Nunes, Amy Tomasi and Jim Copeland observed a unique meeting of youth earlier this month. The Family Resource Center of the Salinas City Elementary School District sponsored a morning meeting on May 6, of third and fourth grade students with Rancho Cielo students. The grade schoolers who attended are at risk, homeless or living in families with members involved in gang activity. Cheryl Camany, Homeless Liaison for the Salinas Elementary Schools, convened the meeting to offer Rancho Cielo students the opportunity to talk about their lives and to help the younger children learn about the negative impacts of bullying and dream about their hopes for their futures. We saw the Rancho Cielo youth preside over a classroom of younger students, drawing them into a game which gave each an opportunity to say a bit about their lives. Then, the older students organized smaller discussion groups with two or three high school students leading discussions with six to eight grade schoolers. Over the course of the Rirst hour they gained the respect of the younger children and moved into conversations about their futures. We saw the Rancho Cielo youth preside over a classroom of younger students, drawing them into a game which gave each an opportunity to say a bit about their lives. We left very impressed by the Rancho Cielo youth, their skill in calming what could have been a chaotic classroom and their desire to instruct and help younger members of the community. We also continue to be impressed with Homeless Liaison Cheryl Camany. Her compassion, creativity and desire to “bring hope” to children and families experiencing severe hardship are truly inspiring. With the leadership of Kristy and Amy we expect to expand our outreach to homeless and at risk students in Salinas Elementary Schools. God’s friends wherever we Hind them. Labyrinth coming to Good Shepherd We are building a stone labyrinth in the pasture on June 27 -‐ 28 and still need rocks that are about the size of two Rists. Over the winter, Good Shepherd parishioners served dinners at the Warming Shelter and met the Carranza family with Rive young children. This family is now housed (YAY!) and needs gently used furnishings. The following is their wish list. Donna Luder is putting together a Spa Day gift basket for Yvonne featuring the Ayurvedic treatment center at Mount Madonna in Watsonville. The gift basket will be given to her at her celebratory coffee hour after the one service on May 24.

DISCOVERY DAY: MY CALL - June 13th.
Commission on Ministry’s annual Discovery Day: My Call -‐ Lay, Priest or Deacon? is coming up on June 13th. This is the Rirst requirement in our ordination process but it is also a valuable process for lay people who are considering more intentional discernment about how they are called to ministry. We will include information about the opportunity for licensed lay ministries, a way to help people focus on and train for a particular area of ministry in the congregation. Anyone discerning a new ministry, lay or ordained, would beneRit from engaging in this day. WHO: For all who want to explore their call to ministry WHAT: Renew your call to a particular ministry, or explore NEW ways of responding to God’s call.
