Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
1. What´s the name of the courses? Gotland Archaeological Field Course, 5 weeks and Gotland
Archaeological Field Course with GIS, 6 weeks.
2. What CRN (course number) do the courses have?
6 weeks with GIS: Number 8 and 5 weeks: Number 9.
3. Does the course have academic credits? The course is ”equivalent” to a university course in
archaeology of 7,5, or 9 points according to the European system (ECTS), meaning 5 weeks or
6 weeks of full course. Teachers are mainly coming from Stockholm and Uppsala universities.
Guest lectures will be from other universities or organisations, from abroad as well as from
Sweden. The field course is accredited at RPA (Register of Professional Archaeologist, at
Boston, USA). Director of the course, Associate Professor Dan Carlsson, is accredited as a
Professional Archaeologist at RPA.
4. What does the course cost include? As a full board participant you have housing (place in a
double room), all meals and transports between the school and the excavation place,
lectures and equipment included in the fee. The course cost is 3.350 USD for 5 weeks course
and 3.980 USD for 6 weeks course.
5. When shall I pay the course fee? First you pay a registration fee of 100 USD, at the same
time as you applicate. The fee will be balanced with the final payment. Last day of final
payment is May 31 and an invoice will be sent to you by e-mail in the middle of April. Note!
You are finally adopted for the course ﬁrst, when the invoice is paid! If payment is not made
before the last date on the invoice, your place will be open for another applicant. We will
confirm your payment by e-mail.
6. How do I transfer the course fee? You pay the fee to our bank account, see below.
Unfortunately we can´t receive payments online with Visa, Mastercard or any other credit
card. Here are the data you need for transferring:

7. What happens if I have to cancel my application? Last date of cancellation is June 8 to get a
refund. Cancellation is notiﬁed in writing. If it involves a repayment, then also provide an
indication of the account number for deposit in an account number to deposit in bank. If the
school must cancel the course, payments will be refunded.

8. What about times for check in and check out from accommodation?
You may check in to accommodation in Hemse from 4 pm the day before the course starts,
(Sunday July 5 for six weeks course and Sunday July 12 for five weeks course). The rooms
must be submitted latest at 9 am on the departure day, (Friday August 14).
9. Does Gotland Folk High School have insurance? As a student at Gotland Folk High School
you have an accident insurance through Folksam Insurance Company (www.folksam.se)
Note! You must have a home insurance to cover your personal items, as well as any damage

10. What happens if I get sick during the course? Medical care is available both in Visby and in
Hemse. Booking is made by telephone: +46 498268009 (Visby) or +46 498204650 (Hemse).

11. Can I lock my room? All rooms at accommodation have locks and you will get your own key.
12. Where can I wash my clothes? The school has two laundries available for our guests.
13. Am I allowed to drink alcohol or use drugs in the school? Gotland Folk High School has a
restrictive policy about alcohol and we expect that you respect that. We have many other
guests staying in the accommodation and since it is a school, one must be able to focus on
the studies. Drugs are not allowed at the school, neither keeping nor using.
14. Do I need to bring my own field excavation kit? Excavations kit will be provided by Gotland
Archaeological Field School so you do not need to bring your own. Personal equipment - such
as gloves, kneepads and sun hat is recommended to bring.
15. Can I make some shopping in Hemse? Hemse is a small municipality with around 1.700
habitants, situated some 50 km south of the town Visby and 10 km from the coast. Hemse
has a variety of shops such as supermarkets, clothing stores and drugstores. Swimming hall
and jogging track are also available.
16. How do I travel to Gotland and Hemse? There are two ways to travel to Gotland, either by
ferry or by air. By ferry you can travel from Nynäshamn, some 60 km south of Stockholm, or
if coming from southern Sweden, from Oskarshamn. Bookings at: www.destinationgotland.se
You can also arrive to Gotland/Visby airport by air. In the summer time there are flights not
only from Stockholm/Arlanda, but also from several other places. Both SAS www.sas.se ,
NextJet www.nextjet.se and Norwegian www.norwegian.com are flying from
Stockholm/Arlanda to Visby. Gotlandsflyg/Malmoe aviation (www.gotlandsflyg.se
www.malmoaviation.se ) are flying from several other destinations, like Stockholm/Bromma
and Gothenburg. In the summer time, Gotlandsflyg has direct connection from Helsinki in
Finland.
From the town of Visby, there is a bus going to Hemse and the school. The bus goes both
from Visby bus station and from the harbour in Visby.

Insurance cover for students
Students at Gotland Folk High School have an accident insurance through Folksam Insurance
Company (www.folksam.se).
NOTE! You must have a home insurance to cover your personal items, as well as any damage to the
Folk High School property.
When is the insurance valid?
The insurance applies to regular activities in school or equivalent, and for travel to and from. The
insurance also covers other activities organized by the school as recreational activities, sports,
outings, field trips, school trips and other activities organized and approved by the principal or
equivalent. Insurance covers accidental damage that occurs during of activity and leisure.
What is an accidental injury?
An accidental injury is a bodily injury that the insured suffer through an unforeseen sudden external
event (an extrinsic force against the body).
Medical expenses
Compensation is paid for medical expenses, medication, treatment and aids in recovery.
Compensation will be paid a maximum of up to 3 years from the time of injury. Compensation is also
for hospitalization. Expenses reimbursed only at care providers who also reimbursed by public
insurance or otherwise financed by public funds.

Health care in Sweden for foreign students
Students from the EU/EEA or Switzerland
If you come to Sweden from a country in the EU/EEA or from Switzerland only to study, you are
entitled to essential health care for the Swedish patient fee. If you wish to have health care which is
not considered to be essential, you must accordingly pay the entire cost yourself.
Essential health care is treatment that cannot wait until you return to your home country. What is
considered as essential health care thus depends on how long you are planning to stay in Sweden. To
obtain essential health care for the Swedish patient fee, you must show proof of identity and your
European Health Insurance Card [europeiska sjukförsäkringskort, EHIC)
Students from countries outside the EU/EEA or Switzerland
If you come to Sweden from a country outside EU/EEA or from Switzerland only to study, you are not
entitled to health care in Sweden for the Swedish patient fee. You should then arrange private
insurance cover. If you do not have insurance, you will have to pay the entire cost yourself if you
need health care, which can be very expensive.
Exceptions
However, there are some exceptions. This is the case for students from Algeria, Australia, Israel,
Québec, Canada, the British Channel Islands, Jersey and Guernsey, and the Isle of Man.
If you are resident in Australia, you are entitled to essential health care for the Swedish patient fee
when you are studying in Sweden. Essential care is care that cannot wait until you return to Australia.
You must be able to present an Australian passport or another passport that shows that you have
permanent right of residence in Australia.
If you are resident in Québec, you are entitled to all health care for the Swedish patient fee when you
are studying in Sweden. You must be able to present a certificate issued by the Bureau des ententes
de sécurité sociale in Québec and a certificate of enrolment on your course in Sweden.
If you are resident in any of the British Channel Islands, Jersey or Guernsey or in the Isle of Man, you
are entitled to acute health care for the Swedish patient fee when you are studying in Sweden. You
must be able to present a U.K. passport or another insurance certificate.
