MEET OUR NEW DIRECTOR
Mike Norklun has signed on with the YMCA
of Pawtucket to be the new Executive Director
of Westwood YMCA. He is taking the place of
longtime director, Don Thomassen who has
just recently retired.
Mike has 30 years experience in the YMCA organization in
Maine, New Hampshire, and for the past 6 years at the Y in
Cranston. Mike went to school at SUNY Brockport and received
his degree in Physical Education. He began his YMCA career in
Andover, MA as a Program Director and moved through the
ranks to become a tenured Executive Director. He and his wife
Kristi and two daughters Emily and Rebecca recently relocated
to Wakefield, RI. His Y background has given him extensive
experience in all aspects of Y work aquatics, sports, fitness,
childcare, camp, facilities and building community relationships.
Mike enjoys camping and hiking. He stays active through
basketball, triathlons, and surfing (all year long). He is very
excited to be the new leader of our outdoor center in Coventry.

land carefully preserved for camping, hiking and day camp activities, as well

regional day camps, childcare (Coventry, Exeter and West Greenwich),
family camping (both RVs, family cabins and tents), recreational programs

The travel camp at the Westwood YMCA offers an exciting alternative to the
traditional day camp experience. Campers travel off site three days per week
enjoying activities throughout the local area. One trip is pre-scheduled and
is listed in the weekly selections. Of the remaining two field trips, one is
generally a beach trip and the other is decided upon with the campers’ input.
During the stay at camp, the campers have the opportunity to enjoy a variety
of activities available at Westwood. This affordable value will help create an
unforgettable summer and build a lifetime of memories.

Another exciting option offered at the Westwood Y is the weekly sports
camps. Each week offers a specific sport. Our progressive program
allows for skill development by an experienced instructor. Participants of
the Sports Camp will be introduced to the rules of the game and actual
play. This is all done while reinforcing the core values of honesty, caring,
respect and responsibility. This fun program is run in the morning after
which the campers will join their respective age groups to fill their day
with traditional fun camp activities such as swimming, boating, group
games and various other camp experiences.

Experience the outdoors and the wonders of nature with the first of our
progressive camp offerings - Camp Rainbow! Camps are arranged in
groups by their ages. Campers will be encouraged to practice healthy
lifestyles and participate in activities geared toward their social, emotional
and physical development. These young campers follow a daily schedule
of events which include group games, arts and crafts, swim lessons,
recreational swim and playground use. These activities are carried out
under the watchful eyes of counselors trained to meet the needs of our
young campers.

CAMP EXPLORATION

This program is day camping in the traditional sense. It is the next phase
of our progressive camp offerings. Campers are assigned to different
groups according to their ages and will participate in age appropriate
activities. They will learn new skills such as boating and archery and
continue to develop their swimming techniques through daily swim lessons.
Our typical daily schedule includes a variety of activities that focus on
character development, team work and good sportsmanship. Campers
have the opportunity to make new friends and develop social awareness.

Camp Adventure is comprised of our oldest campers, allows for further
development of skills introduced in Camp Exploration. Swim lessons
remain an integral part of the daily schedule. Campers in this age group
are given more opportunity to plan certain activities throughout the week
in an effort to develop leadership skills. All activities are geared toward
building good character and responsible teens. We strive to instill four
main character traits: caring, honesty, responsibility and respect.

will get a taste of what true self-expression feels like while building on their
confidence and artistic abilities along the way! Specialty camp is a half-day
program. All campers spend the remainder of the day with their respective
age groups participating in engaging and fun activities. Campers enjoy the
traditional camp offerings such as swimming, boating, archery and games.

CAMP REGISTRATION
INFORMATION
A $15 (non-refundable) registration fee per camper is required.
Fees and Payments
Payment in full is due at time of registration unless a credit card or draft
agreement is in place as a payment plan. All payment of fees in a payment
plan will then be charged on the Friday, 2 weeks prior to the start of each
week of camp and these fees are non-refundable.
Activity Fees
Non-refundable and non-transferable, and drafted weekly with payment
unless paid in full at time of registration.
Transportation
Children will be dropped off and picked up by parent or guardian unless YMCA
transportation is provided. At time of registration, parents are required to
designate authorized individuals permitted to pick up their child.
Sibling Discount
Second child discount - 15% off camp fee
Cancellation Policy / Refund Policy
After June 1st - a two week written notice to cancel a week of camp is
required. A $20 cancellation fee will be charged for each cancelled week.
The registration fee is non-refundable. No refunds for partial week absences
will be granted. Refunds are given for medical reasons when accompanied
by a doctor’s note and clear evidence that the child cannot participate.
Requests must be made by the last day of camp season and does not include
the registration fee. Prior to June 1st - a refund of all camp fees except the
registration fee may be granted upon written request.
Dates and Holidays
Refer to each camp page for the specific dates and times of camps. A
confirmation letter will be sent after the registration and payment forms have
been processed. Beginning June 18, registration deadline will be 5:00pm on
the Thursday prior to the start of each week. Camp fees are not pro-rated
for those weeks.
What Campers Should Bring
Please be sure to label all personal belongings. Campers can bring a backpack,
bag lunch, water, hat, sunscreen, bathing suit, towel, sneakers (no sandals
or flip flops) and a jacket or sweatshirt for cooler days. The YMCA is not
responsible for any lost or stolen items. Lost and found is in the camp office.

payable to: YMCA of Pawtucket.

We are located on the gorgeous Quidnick Reservoir in Coventry, Rhode

GENERAL PROGRAMS
YOUTH GOLF LESSONS
Ages 8-14. Golf lessons will take place at Coventry Pines Golf course
1065 Harkney Hill Road in Coventry. Lessons will focus on the basics
of the game of golf including driving, putting, irons, rules, scoring and
proper golf etiquette. This class will be taught by the Coventry High
School Golf coach in a fun and supportive atmosphere. Minimum of 4,

INTRODUCTION TO SAILING
This class is designed to get you out on the water and teach you the

BOATING SAFETY
The Boating Safety program is required for all members ages 10-15 who
want to use boats with direct parent/guardian supervision. This course
includes swim test, practice, instruction of safety techniques, procedures,

INTRODUCTION TO KAYAKING
Want to experience a fun hobby and be close to nature? Kayaking
provides the basis for a healthly and fit lifestyle. Recreational kayaking
is a fun and safe way for the whole family to enjoy the outdoors. It can
also be relaxing and at times, challenging. This class is an introduction
to kayaking. safety, paddle strokes and exit/enter techniques. You will
get wet, so dress appropriately. Kayaking is not only for raging white
water rapids, you can have lots of fun right here on our beautiful lake.

SAILING - CHECK OUT
To utilize sailboats, all members must demonstrate a basic knowledge of
terms, rigging and introductory sailing skills. You may schedule a time
with a head lifeguard to get checked out or attend one of the introduction
to sailing classes below. You must be age 16 or older to check out one
of our sail boats.
WINDSURFING
Windsurfing, often called sail boarding, is a popular water sport. To do it,
you essentially sail a surf board over the water using your body weight
to push or pull the sail. This introductory class includes sailing theory,
principles, rigging and lots of practice. You must be a minnow swimmer
or better. Ages 14 and up. Limit 4.

ARCHERY LESSONS
Learning archery is a fun and relaxing hobby that everyone can
enjoy. Archery is important because it uses a variety of skills from
hand-eye coordination, discipline, and many other useful lifelong skills.
Archery class provides the opportunity to participate in an activity that
promotes concentration and self-control. Basic introduction to archery
including fletching, types of bows, proper safety and handling of the
equipment. Bows, arrows and targets will be provided.

TENNIS LESSONS
Looking to play some tennis? Tennis is one of the most popular sports
in the US and the second most-played sport worldwide. Lessons are
a great way to improve your game, gain skills, discover a new sport
and meet people! Y Lessons focus on the basic fundamentals of tennis,
volleys, forehands, backhands, serves and scoring. YMCA Classes are for
beginners and no previous experience is needed. All participants need to
bring a tennis racket and ball to play.

SKIN DIVING
Skin Diving is the act of swimming freely underwater. It is done with the
aid of a face mask, swimming fins for the feet and a snorkel breathing
tube. The fins increase the propulsion and agility of the swimmer. This
program is a basic introduction to mask, fins and snorkel. Ages 10 and

PADDLE BOARDING
Want to check out the newest activity at the Westwood YMCA? Jump on and
be trained on how to use a paddle board. Once checked out, you can utilize

WALK, BIKE OR RUNNING CLUBS
Interested in meeting with a group for activities – sign in at the office
and we’ll gather like-minded individuals and once we have two or more
we will set and post times. A great way to exercise and socialize.
YOGA ON THE BEACH
This is a 6-week class. Aside from physical benefits, yoga helps manage
stress which has been known to have adverse effects on the body and
mind. Come start your day by saluting the sun with a Yoga class. A local
Yoga instructor will take you through poses that will increase flexibility,
build strength, and energize your entire being. Please bring a yoga mat
to each class and get ready to be centered, Classes will take place on
the beach at Westwood. Classes begin July 7 through August 13.

AQUA FITNESS
Aqua Fitness is a 6-week class. This program designed to take you
through a varied array of activities both in and out of the water. The
class will focus on a medium impact workout to help increase strength,

office and it’s good for up to 4 punches (classes). Classes begin July 7
through August 13.

Saturday crafts program is designed for participants to express their

SWIM LESSONS
PRE-SCHOOL SWIM LESSONS
AGES 3 - 5
MEMBERS: $48 (4 weeks) • NON-MEMBERS: $90 (4 weeks)
The YMCA Preschool Swim Program is a nationally recognized program
for children ages 3 through 5 years. This program offers children their
first experience in the water without parental participation. The Y is the
starting point for many youth to learn about becoming and staying active
and developing healthy habits they’ll carry with them throughout their
lives. A trained swim instructor teaches this class using the YMCA core
values. Basic level activity for children designed to reduce stress; personal
safety, personal growth, stroke development, water sports and rescue.
PIKE
Beginning level class that introduces the child to aquatics. Development
of basic components is the goal. Students begin with little or no water
exposure.
EEL
This level practices more basic skills, works on swimming horizontally
and going under water. Students should be able to float and submerse
completely at the beginning of the course.
RAY
Students begin to master strokes and are working towards swimming
greater distances independently, treading water and diving skills.

YOUTH SWIM LESSONS
AGES 6 - 15

Youth Swim Lessons utilizes the Y-USA Progressive Swim Program. Each
skill level is designed to give your child the opportunity to develop in
five areas: personal safety, stroke development, personal growth, water
sports and water rescue.
POLLIWOG
This level focuses on paddle skills, rhythmic breathing, front and back
floats and getting comfortable in the water.
GUPPY
At the guppy level, students are building on the confidence and the skills
they developed in the Polliwog level. Focus is on the front crawl stroke
and rotary breathing.
MINNOW
At this level, students are moving from a beginning to an intermediate
level of swim. Focus is on further development of front and back crawl,
increased endurance, emergency procedures and personal safety.
FISH
At this level, students perfect their skills and acquire new ones. Focus is
on the breast stroke kick and dolphin kick, elementary back stroke and
basic first aid.
FLYING FISH
By this level, the swimmer has advanced to a high level of comfort and
confidence in the water. Focus is on the butterfly and breast stroke, open
turns, extension assists and underwater search.
SHARK
At the Shark level, students learn the relevance of swimming skills,
lifesaving techniques, conditioning and decision making.
SWIM LESSON INFORMATION
• Class Cancellation – For inclement weather will be decided one hour prior to start of class.
• Makeup – Classes will be scheduled for the following Friday at normal
scheduled times.
• Lesson length for preschool will be 35 minutes, youth will be 40 minutes.
• Minimum class size is three, classes with fewer may be combined with
another class.
• Additional classes may be added to accommodate students.
• Parents may be present during lessons at a reasonable distance as not
to distract students.
• Practice is encouraged outside class times with parent supervision.

FAMILY DAY TRIPS
Come join us as we explore some of the best attractions in
Southern New England! For youth and adults - ages 8 & up. Fees
include transportation and staff supervision. There is a limit of 13
and minimum of 6. Remember to bring a lunch & drink, sunblock

HORSEBACK RIDING AT

Come with us as we travel to Groton, Connecticut to visit the world’s
first nuclear powered submarine and sub museum! Come and explore
the world’s first nuclear powered submarine that travelled under the
polar ice pack back in 1957!

PURGATORY CHASM STATE RESERVATION
Bring the family and join us as we go rock climbing in Uxbridge,
Massachusetts! Purgatory Chasm was created by glaciers during the
last ice age! It is a great place to climb, explore or just have a picnic!
Please wear hiking boots or sneakers. No flip flops please.

Let’s get wet ‘n’ wild at the Yawgoo waterslides in Exeter, Rhode Island.
The park has 7850 feet of slides, 3 swimming pools in a professionally

Come to the office at the Westwood YMCA. Fees are due at the time of
registration. The deadline for class registration is no later then 3 days
prior to the scheduled start date. Special events require no registration

before prior to the start of class, call after that time for an update at

Financial Aid
The YMCA has financial aid for those families in need. For more information

At the YMCA, your time and talent go a long way. Do you have a skill

During the school year, the Westwood YMCA provides before and after
school care for children from grades K through 6. At the Y, children learn
values and positive behaviors. They can explore their unique talents and
interests, helping them realize their potential. Our 3 sites, strategicaly located throughout Coventry and Exeter/West Greenwich, are licensed by the
Department of Children, Youth and Families (DCYF) and recognized through
BrightStars. The Y has built a reputation on providing safe, affordable and
convenient child care for families in the area for many years. Visit us and
