Dear GPS coach,
I would like to welcome you to the GPS family. The essence of the club is to provide a positive, enjoyable and challenging learning environment for all of our players that will push them to reach their
full potential.
PETER BRADLEY
The Coach Handbook is a new addition to the GPS learning environment. We want our
coaches to be students of the game and to start becoming more accountable for their own learning
pathway. In order to do this, coaches will need to take on more responsibility for their own development on and off the field.
GPS DIRECTOR OF COACHING
This handbook will provide coaches with more information on what the expectations are from the club with regards to the style of play that we
want to see permeate all of our teams, the systems of play and the roles within those systems that players need to be familiar with, and tools to be
able to evaluate individual training and game performances.
We hope that our coaches will find a lot of their questions answered by referring to their handbook and that it will become a valuable tool in their
development journey.

GPS teams always look to build attacks from the back as opposed to playing kick and run soccer.

GPS teams play an indirect style of soccer but have an awareness of the most appropriate penetrating pass.

GPS SYSTEMS OF PLAY
In the 11 v 11 game format, GPS teams will operate in the 1-4-3-3 system.
In the 8v8 game format, GPS teams will operate in the 1-2-4-1 system.
In the 6v6 game format, GPS teams will operate in the 1-2-1-2 system.
In the 4v4 game format, GPS teams will operate in the 1-2-1 system.

All GPS players aged U9 & U10 will play the 6v6 game format with a 1-2-1-2 system.
Attached are the roles and responsibilities for each position with the system.

Evaluation and assessment is an important part of every player’s long-term development.
Every GPS player will receive continual feedback throughout the soccer year. However, GPS players will also undergo 3 formal assessments during
the year - this will highlight areas where a player is succeeding but also areas of their game that they need to address in order to improve.
The GPS Player Evaluation schedule will be as follows: U9, U10 - & U11
End of Fall season verbal evaluation. Player and parents are to be in attendance at the evaluation meeting.
End of Spring season written evaluation. Player and parents are to be in attendance at the evaluation meeting.
U12, U13 & U14

Warm up is an intergal part of gameday or practice preparation. It is a
period of time for players to bring their bodies and minds to the
required state in order to enable peak performance.

INJURY REPORTING
Below the recommended protocol for dealing with injuries for all MCU / SM Phoenix Players.
Often with certain injuries, time is a major factor in determining when the athlete can return to sport. Our collective goal is to create a safe conduit
from time of injury to medical evaluation through completion of rehab process and return to field.
In 2014, we will again be working with OA Centers for Orthopedics (OA) www.orthoassociates.com
- OA has been the official Sports Medicine and Physical Therapy Provider for Maine Premier Soccer since 2010.
- OA Physicians are fellowship trained, board certified, and a nationally recognized orthopedic practice.
- OA facilities are conveniently based in Portland, Saco, Windham and Brunswick
- OA incorporates physical assessment & management of the injured athlete for a safe & efficient return to soccer.
- OA has extensive experience with all levels of athletes from pediatrics through professionals.
- OA Boasts Northern New England’s first and only fully integrated orthopedics, sports medicine, physical rehabilitation and athletic training
facilities.
Apart from the high quality of care and service provided by these groups, MPS players will have priority access to appointments that would
otherwise take significantly longer. Steps to Benefit from the MPS / OA Partnership when Injured:
- OA offers same day orthopedic care through their First Care program.
- Call 828-2121 and Identify yourself as a member of MPS and that you would like to see one of the sports medicine physicians
- Advise OA where you live as they have locations in Saco, Portland, Windham and Brunswick.
- OA will then send you to the appropriate appointment specialist who will set up an appointment for the athlete.

When a player is injured in practice or in a game, that player should contact OA first and have their medical insurance details on hand. Identify yourself as a member of Maine Premier Soccer, the Staff at the facility will then assess whether the injury needs to be first seen by a Doctor or can receive
therapy immediately. Care will then be recommended based on your location as OA has a number of orthopedic sites.
Finally please email your coach along with Craig Fannan ([email protected]) the details of your injured player, so that we record
the number of players benefiting from this partnership. For those with insurance, please contact your individual company with any questions regarding varying physical therapy benefits**
