 Student should bring original immigration documents to this session (passport, visa, I-20/DS-2019)
 Transfer students will be issued a WSU I-20 with 24 -48 hours after completing this check-in
-(TENTATIVE) Thursday/Friday, August 20th or 21st – SSA Session, Bryan Hall Lobby
Branch campus students should work with the DSO located on their campus to satisfy immigration
requirements.
HOLDS
“RIP” Hold – INTL Programs hold (Blocks all enrollment activity)
International students who do not complete the immigration check-in will have a hold
placed on their account at 5:00pm on Friday, August 21st. This hold will prevent all
enrollment activity. IP-GS will not lift the hold until the student has completed the
mandatory immigration check-in.
“RIN” Hold – INTL Drop hold (Blocks all drop activity)
Added after the 10th day of classes for all international students. Adding classes is
not prevented (IP-GS does not process adds for international students). Only
dropping classes are prevented to keep students from accidentally falling out of
legal F-/J-1 status.
SOCIAL SECURITY (TENTATIVE)
If SSA Representative is able to come to campus:
1. Department sends (via intercampus mail) an on-campus employment letter to IP-GS
2. Int’l student advisor verifies student’s SEVIS/immigration record and stamps/signs letter
(only GS advisors can do this)
3. Student arrives and attends immigration check-in (Wednesday, August 19th in Bryan Hall
Lobby between 10:30 am -11:30 am)
 Student brings all immigration documents to check-in
 Department employment letters sent to IP-GS are available to pick up at the SSA session
4. Student attends SSA session with all immigration documents (Thursday or Friday of
orientation week 9 am – 11 am)
5. Receive receipt notice at SSA Session
6. Waits for card to arrive (usually within 3-4 weeks if no delays in processing)
SOCIAL SECURITY REQUIRED DOCUMENTS
• Original and copies of all immigration documents required:


I-20/DS-2019
Passport
Visa
I-94 number (Electronic record printed off online after arrival
https://i94.cbp.dhs.gov/I94/request.html)
 Completed SSA application (can pick up an application at orientation check-in)
 Use IP-GS Address on application
 Signed letter of employment (Assistantship offer letters don’t work – need to have WSU’s EIN number
on it)
 Students on a J record must obtain authorization from sponsor to apply for SSN
 WSU isn’t always the sponsor for J students (IIE, Fulbright, USAID)
SOCIAL SECURITY
How you can help students with this process:
1. Write their employment letter and send it to IP-GS prior to the student’s arrival
(allows GS staff to stamp/sign)
2. Communicate the importance of attending orientation/immigration check-in
3. Remind students of documents to bring
 Assist with copies if necessary
4. Don’t send students to SSA without completing the mandatory immigration check-in
5. Any students arriving late should be sent to IP-GS in Bryan Hall 108 as soon as
they arrive with all of their immigration documents
