GRADUATE COORDINATOR WORKSHOP April 28th, 2015 – Lighty 405 INTERNATIONAL PROGRAMS – GLOBAL SERVICES International Student Advisors Bryan Hall – Room 108 Hadassah Galey 8 am – 5 pm David Gardner Daily Walk-in/Appointment Hours: Kim Steinmetz M, T, F: 10– 11:30 am & 1:00– 3:00 pm W & TH: 1:00– 3:00 pm FALL 2015 ORIENTATION -Tuesday, August 18th – Graduate School Orientation All day orientation IP-GS will lead 2 sessions for new international students -Wednesday, August 19th – IP Immigration check-in, Bryan Hall Lobby Check-in between 10:30 am and 11:30 am Student should bring original immigration documents to this session (passport, visa, I-20/DS-2019) Transfer students will be issued a WSU I-20 with 24 -48 hours after completing this check-in -(TENTATIVE) Thursday/Friday, August 20th or 21st – SSA Session, Bryan Hall Lobby Branch campus students should work with the DSO located on their campus to satisfy immigration requirements. HOLDS “RIP” Hold – INTL Programs hold (Blocks all enrollment activity) International students who do not complete the immigration check-in will have a hold placed on their account at 5:00pm on Friday, August 21st. This hold will prevent all enrollment activity. IP-GS will not lift the hold until the student has completed the mandatory immigration check-in. “RIN” Hold – INTL Drop hold (Blocks all drop activity) Added after the 10th day of classes for all international students. Adding classes is not prevented (IP-GS does not process adds for international students). Only dropping classes are prevented to keep students from accidentally falling out of legal F-/J-1 status. SOCIAL SECURITY (TENTATIVE) If SSA Representative is able to come to campus: 1. Department sends (via intercampus mail) an on-campus employment letter to IP-GS 2. Int’l student advisor verifies student’s SEVIS/immigration record and stamps/signs letter (only GS advisors can do this) 3. Student arrives and attends immigration check-in (Wednesday, August 19th in Bryan Hall Lobby between 10:30 am -11:30 am) Student brings all immigration documents to check-in Department employment letters sent to IP-GS are available to pick up at the SSA session 4. Student attends SSA session with all immigration documents (Thursday or Friday of orientation week 9 am – 11 am) 5. Receive receipt notice at SSA Session 6. Waits for card to arrive (usually within 3-4 weeks if no delays in processing) SOCIAL SECURITY REQUIRED DOCUMENTS • Original and copies of all immigration documents required: I-20/DS-2019 Passport Visa I-94 number (Electronic record printed off online after arrival https://i94.cbp.dhs.gov/I94/request.html) Completed SSA application (can pick up an application at orientation check-in) Use IP-GS Address on application Signed letter of employment (Assistantship offer letters don’t work – need to have WSU’s EIN number on it) Students on a J record must obtain authorization from sponsor to apply for SSN WSU isn’t always the sponsor for J students (IIE, Fulbright, USAID) SOCIAL SECURITY How you can help students with this process: 1. Write their employment letter and send it to IP-GS prior to the student’s arrival (allows GS staff to stamp/sign) 2. Communicate the importance of attending orientation/immigration check-in 3. Remind students of documents to bring Assist with copies if necessary 4. Don’t send students to SSA without completing the mandatory immigration check-in 5. Any students arriving late should be sent to IP-GS in Bryan Hall 108 as soon as they arrive with all of their immigration documents QUESTIONS
