GFI COORDINATOR
Catch the Spirit, The GFI is back for 2015.
I have been involved in different capacities with this tournament since 2008 and am very excited to be working with
such enthusiastic and dedicated Board of Directors, Volunteer Team Leaders and Volunteers for this 34th tournament.
This whole town “Catches the Spirit” with the generous support of the sponsors and City of Grand Forks and the time
and effort of over 300 volunteers who make this exciting event possible.
This year we will be seeing the Burnaby Bulldogs returning to defend their title as the second Canadian team in 32
tournaments to win the title. We have a great line up of challengers for Burnaby this year and we will be expecting to
see some outstanding ball play. Of course, along with the great games for the fans to watch, there will be our 50/50
and Bingo games to enjoy, great food at the Hard Ball Café, refreshments at the Blue Monster and excellent baseball! So CATCH THE SPIRIT
and come out to the games!
See you there!

Some GFI History
The Grand Forks International Baseball Tournament
traces its roots all the way back to 1968 when Larry
Seminoff and other local baseball enthusiasts held the
first annual International Labor day Tournament at
James Donaldson Park. As the annual tournament grew
and garnered more attention, Seminoff and company
were able to secure a local sponsor in the Grand Forks
and District Credit Union. In 1975, the Grand Forks
International Baseball Tournament, as we know it, was
born, and Grand Forks became home to what is recognized by many as one of the best tournaments of its
kind in North America.
As the years went by, the Grand Forks International’s
roster of teams continued to expand with more and
more teams coming from outside of the Forks’
immediate area with teams from Seattle, San Diego and
Lewiston forming the
backbone of the annual
event. Major improvements followed at James
Donaldson Park, with
lights being installed in
1981 and the grandstand
being built in 1986, paving
the way for the GFI to
become the largest invitational baseball tournament in Canada.
In 1984 the tournament
increased to 12 teams, but
it wasn’t until 1987 when
the true “international” flavor was added as Grand
Forks welcomed Japan for
the first time and in 1988,
Taiwan. Since then, squads from China, Russia and
Australia have added to this International flavour.
Over the years, the Grand Forks International has
welcomed some of the world’s best amateur and semiprofessional players with 37, as of 2014, going on to play
in the ranks of Major League Baseball. A quick glance at
a list of some of the names of those who have played on
the hallowed grounds of James Donaldson Park could
easily make up a World Series champion team. For
instance, 2-time Cy Young Awards Winner and current

2004 with the Seattle Studs. 2003 MLB World Series Most
Valuable Player and current Boston Red Sox ace Josh
Becket played at the GFI with the Houston Astros in
1997. Brendan Ryan, starting shortstop for the St. Louis
Cardinals played with the Lewiston Truckers in 2001,
while current New York Mets left fielder and Trail, British
Columbia product Jason Bay, the winner of the National
Leagues 2004 Rookie of the Year award played with Trail
Orioles at the GFI. Starting pitcher, Jeff Francis, of the
Colorado Rockies pitched for Team Canada in 1999 and
Chicago Cubs outfielder, Kosuke Fukodome, played for
Japan in 1997. Two other familiar names are 2-time
World Series champion with the Toronto Blue Jays and
1993 American League batting champion (.363), John
Olerud, who played with the Washington State Cougars
in 1987 and 1988 and
Maple Ridge, British

with 49, and was also
named the National
League’s Most Valuable
Player in that same year.
Walker played in the GFI
in 1984, and is a future
Major League Baseball
Hall-of-Famer.
This prestigious tourney
has attracted many of the
top semi-pro teams from the United States and Canada
and this year is no exception.
The Burnaby Bulldogs look to defend their title won in
a nail biting finish defeting the Everett Merchants. Every
team at this year’s event will have an equal shot to take
home a portion of the $54,000.00 total prize amount,
including the $20,000.00 first place prize.

THE WEST COAST GUNS
The are the West Coast Guns? They are a team comprised of college graduates and released players that have the
desire to continue their career. They have been nomads but have found a home. They will play at the Kitsap County
Fairgrounds when the Kitsap BlueJackets are on the road. They will also attend semi-pro tournaments like the
Grand Forks International (GFI) Baseball Tournament. Our goal is to help these players sign independent and affiliated contract. A lot more information about this club will be released soon. Always looking to send out a Hired Gun.

The Studs are back again to improve their 3rd place finish from 2014. This semi-pro
baseball team traces its beginnings to 1954 and are again led by head coach Barry
Aden. The Studs will once again take aim at another Grand Forks trophy. Over the years
the Studs have showcased some very special talent in their lineup. Two examples are
Brent Lillibridge and Tim Lincecum. Lincecum, who was drafted number 10 overall in
2006 year’s major league draft by San Francisco Giants, received the 2006 Golden Spikes

BURNABY BULLDOGS
The Burnaby Bulldogs are very excited to return and defend their Championship title for the 2015 Grand Forks

The Bulldogs, first participating in 2003 and a second place finish in 2009 where the fans were very much on board
with their efforts against Lewiston and then taking the #1 spot in 2014 against Everett Merchants with a 6 to 5 victorty in the last inning.
They have a strong organization with a deep talent pool to draw from, achieving a fair bit of recent success in addition to their second place at the 2009 GFI: This list of success would include 10 Provincial titles between the two
teams that make up this club and includes the following National Championship Medals over the last several
years…Junior National Bronze
Medalists - 2009; Senior National
Gold Medalists - 2010; Senior
National Silver Medalists - 2011;
and Junior National Silver

The Bulldogs are coached by

Baseball Congress recognized him for his lifelong dedication to the team by electing him to their Hall of Fame.
Throughout the years, ten former Everett Merchant players have made the major leagues as well as countless number of players have been drafted. The Everett Merchants are a summer team located in Everett, Washington. The

The North Sound Emeralds were established in the summer of 2013 as a new semi-pro team in the region. They

This summer the Emeralds will be affiliated with the newly formed Northwest Collegiate Baseball League (NWCBL)

The 2014 Emeralds will be

have prior GFI experience.
