Wildquack Duck River Festival and Duck Race
Jackson, New Hampshire: A recognized
quintessential New England Village and a highly
visited resort destination plays host to the 26th racing
of the Ducks Sunday May 24, 2015. The Wildcat River
will have almost 3,500 yellow rubber ducks racing
against each other on their way to the finish line.
The Wilquack Duck River Festival has been helping to
raise money for area non-profits such as the Kennett
High Key Club, the local Special Olympics swim team,
the Jackson Police Department, as well as the Jackson
Area Chamber of Commerce. If you represent a local
non-profit of the Jackson Area and would like to be
included in this event you are encouraged to call the
chamber at 603-383-9356, get involved and take
advantage of this successful event.
Admission to this event is still FREE. Everyone
is invited to line the riverbanks of the Wildcat River
and help cheer their favorite duck onto victory.
Duck tickets, food and other activities are priced
accordingly.
Kick off for the festival starts Saturday May 16th
& Sunday May 17th with the first appearances of
Wildquack (our big furry duck mascot) from the hours
of 2 PM until 4 PM throughout the Jackson Area. Be

Summer Camp! WildQuest Summer Camp is
offered nine weeks out of the summer starting
June 22 and is for children ages 4-15. Camp
always includes nature activities, animal and
plant identification, arts and crafts, quests,

Our goal is to foster an appreciation and
understanding of the natural and cultural history
of Prescott Farm, and by extension, children’s
own special places as well. We believe that
a camp experience with us will enhance your

Hatcheries gearing up
for spring fish stocking
CONCORD, N.H. - Fish culturists at New Hampshire's six state trout hatcheries
have been holding on, waiting for Mother Nature to provide conditions favorable
for spring stocking. After a brief delay, the stocking trucks are now rolling. New
Hampshire hatcheries have close to one million catchable-size trout ready for
this season. "As open water begins to appear and shoreline ice starts to break up,
anglers - including me - can't help but look forward to open water trout fishing,"
says N.H. Fish and Game Fisheries Chief Jason Smith.
The late spring meant fish culturists were not being able to stock trout in
early April. "Ponds locked in with ice and high, cold water conditions have made
it necessary to delay stocking in every region of the state," says Smith. "Many
of our ponds are accessed by dirt roads, so even in places where the ice has
receded enough to receive fish, muddy roads do not provide access for the heavy
commercial vehicles used for stocking trout." Smith explained that it will be a few
weeks before some rivers and streams are at "fishable" levels. Most trout species
are reluctant to bite until the streams reach temperatures in the mid-40's. "We
don't want to stock streams too early, because cold, high water early in the season
does not present suitable conditions for trout angling."
New Hampshire's designated trout ponds, which open April 25, 2015,
are generally places where you might find early season success. As the season
progresses, fishing on smaller streams will pick up, from south to north, with the
larger rivers to follow. A good rule of thumb is to follow the black flies as they move
north. An additional bonus for 2015 is the unexpected availability of some surplus
Atlantic salmon broodstock, some weighing over ten pounds. New Hampshire Fish
and Game was able to acquire these fish from the Nashua National Fish Hatchery
for release into the Merrimack River watershed. Broodstock Atlantic Salmon
permits are no longer required.
Upstream of the Garvin's Falls Dam in Bow, N.H., general fishing rules apply,
meaning two salmon per day, minimum length 15 inches. Downstream of the
structure will be catch and release for all salmon, with the intent being to protect
any wild Atlantic salmon that could potentially be returning from the ocean.
Raising nearly one million trout each year is no small task. New Hampshire's
hatchery system, funded by fishing license sales and federal Sport Fish Restoration
funds, includes six facilities across the state: The Berlin Fish Hatchery provides the
three primary trout species to the North Country, including Coos County and the
northern reaches of Grafton and Carroll Counties.
The Twin Mountain and Warren hatcheries provide trout to the White Mountain
Region. Powder Mill Hatchery in New Durham provides trout from the seacoast
through the Lakes Region and into Carroll County. Powder Mill Hatchery also
provides the Lakes Region with rainbow trout and landlocked salmon for New
Hampshire's large lakes program. April 1 was the opening for salmon season in
lakes managed for landlocked salmon. Conditions should be improving as the ice
recedes. Avid salmon anglers are encouraged to help sustain this fishery by taking
the Landlocked Salmon Anglers' Pledge (visit http://www.fishnh.com/Fishing/
salmon_anglers_pledge.html). In the Southwest region, Fish and Game's Milford
Fish Hatchery has gained the reputation of growing "the big ones," and with good
reason. Well water provides favorable growing temperatures for trout year round,
giving this hatchery a slight advantage over other facilities during the winter
months.New Hampton Hatchery is responsible for providing trout from central New
Hampshire up to the White Mountains. In June, fingerling brook trout raised at
New Hampton Hatchery will literally take flight, as they are stocked by helicopter
into remote ponds in the White Mountains of New Hampshire. These remote ponds
provide a special opportunity for those who wish to get off the beaten path and
spend a day hiking and fishing in the White Mountains. The fishing season for
designated trout ponds, including remote ponds, opens on the fourth Saturday in

host the 3rd Annual Heifer Parade with Food & Fiddle
on Saturday, May 2, 2015 from 10:00 am to 3:00 pm.
Cows from Brookford Farm will parade to the historic
pastures at the Village at approximately 11:00 am.
Admission is free.
Maypole dancing, food, outdoor barn dancing,
and make-your-own head wreaths, tutus and May
baskets will be available throughout the day. Come
early and decorate yourself for the parade or wear
your best spring bonnet! Prizes will be awarded for
the best hat.
Self-guided exhibits at the Village will be open to
attendees and guided tours will be available at 11:00

are grouped into sori. Each sorus is usually covered
with a special shielding growth called the indusium.
The homeowner often confuses the sori with scale
insects, but their regular placement on the leaflets
identifies them as sori, while scale insects usually
settle on the midrib of the leaf. Shade the bulb
pan. Autumn sowing is best, but the spores may
be saved until spring. When spores germinate they
form a tiny, very thin, heart-shaped plant body
called a prothallis. This is the generation which
produces sperm and eggs. The union of these sex
cells produces an embryo which grows into the
typical fern generation, one which will eventually
become mature and produce more spores. Once the
spores have germinated, place the prothallia in a flat
of fine leafmold at a 1 x 1 inch spacing. Be sure the
atmosphere is moist. When the young ferns are large
enough to handle, plant them in very small pots.
The primary pests of ferns are white fly, scale
insects, and root-feeding mealy bugs. Control of
these pests on ferns is difficult, as conventional
sprays cannot be used for fear of damaging the
foliage. We suggest a granular form of systemic
insecticide applied to the soil surface for control of
these insects. Follow label directions precisely.

Kites Against Cancer event planned for May 17th
Annual event benefits Oncology patients at Exeter
Hospital. The sky above Hampton Beach will be filled
with kites of all colors on Sunday, May 17th as a sign
of hope and support for those affected by cancer
during Exeter Hospital’s seventh annual Kites Against
Cancer event.
All proceeds from the event benefit The Beyond
the Rainbow Fund at Exeter Hospital. Founded in
2002 by Anne-Marie Viviano, a former Hampton
resident, The Beyond the Rainbow Fund provides
financial assistance and support to Exeter Hospital
cancer patients in need. Donations to this fund
provide assistance with expenses such as groceries,
utilities, gas, and rent/mortgage payments, as
well as any other practical needs that may become
unmanageable during their treatment. The fund also
provides additional support by offering integrative
therapy, such as massage, as well as wellness and
fitness programs that further assist patients in their
healing. “The Beyond the Rainbow Fund has become
a valuable resource to many patients as they undergo
cancer treatment at the hospital. In many cases, it
has enabled individuals to better focus on healing
and recovery by helping to alleviate some of the
additional financial stress that they may be facing.”
said Anne- Marie’s sister Carrie Shaw. “The fund has a
direct impact on the lives of many patients and their
families. It also helps provide them with a realization
that they are not alone in their fight.”
Activities include kite flying and decorating, face
painting, raffles, refreshments, music from Z107 and
more. This year’s event will again feature Zumba® on
the beach from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Raffle prizes
have been generously donated by area businesses.
Kites can also be decorated, or personalized in
memory or honor of a loved one.
“This event is a day in which the community
is able to come together and celebrate and honor
the lives of their loved ones affected by cancer,” said
Shaw. “It is such an uplifting event and to see many
of the same individuals and families come over the
years makes you realize the significance of the event.
Seeing all of the kites flying is a visual reminder of
how many people have been impacted by cancer.”

Lancaster, NH – New Hampshire’s Grand North
is beckoning visitors this spring and summer with
a whole host of new activities and fun, including
an expanded Ride the Wilds™ trail network, aerial
adventures with ELC Outdoors, new cabins and ATV
adventures at the Cabins at Lopstick, a brand new

ELC Outdoors
ELC Outdoors announces several new trips
and activities for the 2015 season, including
canoe and kayak rentals, an aerial adventure
course, guided fishing trips and yurt camping,
all based at its newly-acquired property in Errol,
NH. ELC Outdoors' new, one-day, one-of-a-kind
high ropes course features a series of ropes, wires,
platforms and bridges suspended 12 to 40 feet off
the ground with views of Mt. Washington and the
White Mountains. Participants can choose from 12
exciting high ropes courses or move continuously
from one course to the next; people can be belayed
automatically or by an ELC staff member. In
addition, ELC Outdoors will also offer two new
wildlife trips providing visitors the opportunity to
view majestic, native wildlife. Expert ELC guides
will take visitors to the best spots for spying New
Hampshire’s renowned wildlife, including moose,
deer, bald eagles, loons and more.
Santa’s Village
In its never-ending quest to deliver pure
joy, family-style, Santa’s Village introduces a
thrilling new ride this summer: You Tubing! You
Tubing is a summertime version of a wintertime
classic – sliding down a hillside in a large inner
tube. Christmastime visitors to the locally-owned
and operated park got a sneak peek of this new
attraction last December, and gave it rave reviews.
Santa’s Village, which is a TripAdvisor Travelers’
Choice 2014 Award Winner as one of the Top
25 Amusement Parks in the U.S., will also offer

Cabins at Lopstick
Nominated a fourth time for Orvis Endorsed
Outfitter of the Year, the Cabins at Lopstick, which
won the coveted award in 2013, added two new
cabins for the 2015 season. Harry's Cabin is a
two-bedroom log cabin on 11 acres with incredible
views of First Connecticut Lake, a private trout
pond and a wood burning stone fireplace. Built
by Pittsburg fishing and hunting guide, Harry
Scott, the cabin is located adjacent to the Lopstick
property, enticingly close to the Trophy Stretch of
the Upper Connecticut River for world-class fishing
and just a short walk to the lake.
The Savard Cabin, which was formerly the
owners’ quarters, features three bedrooms, two
baths, a huge farmer's porch with a hot tub situated in a private setting. The cabin boasts 

Bear Rock Adventures
Bear Rock Adventures, the premier destination
for ATV rentals and guided tours, will open
a new location this spring at the Cabins at
Lopstick. Located right on the property, Bear
Rock Adventures will offer ATV rentals directly
to Lopstick guests and the public. The Cabins at
Lopstick will also offer lodging packages that
include ATV rentals.
Ride the Wilds
All-Terrain-Vehicle (ATV) enthusiasts are set
to enjoy their first full season on the first phase of
the Ride the Wilds network, completed in summer
2014. The Ride the Wilds trail network spans New
Hampshire’s Coos County over 1000-plus miles of
interconnected ATV trails, and is recognized as a
“Grand Adventure” by NH Grand. One of the largest
networks of Off-Highway Recreational Vehicle
(OHRV) Trail Systems in the country, Ride the
Wilds is the premier destination for seasoned ATV
riders and those wishing to learn in the eastern
United States. Harry Brown, President of the North
Country OHRV Coalition, a leader of the Ride the
Wilds initiative, says the Ride the Wilds network
adding some more adventure and excitement to its
visitors’ stays. New this year, the Town & Country
will partner with Northeast Snowmobile & ATV
Rental to offer rentals at the Inn with direct trail
access from the resort’s property. Town & Country
also partners with the Mt. Washington Auto Road
and Great Glen Trails to offer summer discounts,
and the resort also offers family adventure
packages throughout the summer, featuring
lodging, breakfast and tickets to Santa’s Village or
StoryLand.
Bretton Woods
Universally-acclaimed recreational area
Bretton Woods adds several family-friendly
adventure activities for 2015, including river
tubing on the Ammonoosuc River, mountain-top
kite flying, new mountain biking trails at Fabyan
Fields, and guided moose watching tours. The
Bretton Woods Adventure Center opens for the
season on Saturday, June 20.
Mount Washington Cog Railway
The Mount Washington Cog Railway will enjoy
its first full season with its brand new engine.
The Cog is also working on a new switch to be
finished in 2016. The switch will eventually allow
the railway to take more people to the top. When
complete, trains will be able to park side-by-side
and there will be a loading platform for guests.

Sue Reich's talks about the important
role quilters and quilts played in
America during World War II. The wom
en at home were just as committed to
winning the war as the men fighting
overseas, and the themes the women
chose for their quilts reflected that
commitment. The themes fall into
four broad categories: supporting the
war effort; building morale; selling
or raffling their quilts to raise funds
for the war effort; and reinforcing
wartime strictures. Examples include

quilts, and patchwork quilts sold or
auctioned to raise money for the war
effort. Sue Reich lectures nationally on
a variety of quilt history topics and is
well known for organizing the quilts in

From Hinsdale to Hillsborough and
Walpole to Wilton, hundreds of
tracts of land have been conserved
in the Monadnock region so that
the area’s natural beauty will be
preserved for the benefit of future
generations. Celebrate the beauty of
the Monadnock region’s conservation
spaces in this wonderful juried art
show entitled Treasured Places,
Protected Spaces. Artists will be on
hand at the opening reception from
4-6pm to talk to the public. In honor
of the exhibit, Electric Earth Orchestra
of Peterborough will conduct a short
program of works inspired by the
region’s wildest preserved lands.
Nature-inspired works for flue, viola,
and harp will be performed at 7pm.
Treasured Places, Protected Spaces is a
collaboration between regional artists,
the Historical Society of Cheshire
County, the Monadnock Conservancy,
and other local and regional
environmental groups. Proceeds from
the sale of artwork goes to support the
Historical Society of Cheshire County’s
mission to collect, preserve and
communicate the history of Cheshire
County, New Hampshire.
