Kjellman critical of non-action on Henniker's School Playground
The Henniker Community School
Board had an eventful meeting Wednesday
night. It began with a tribute to former
Board Chair Gary Guzouskas and ended
with the resignation of Principal Katherine
McBride. Guzouskas was presented with
a gift in recognition of his many years of
service to the District and McBride announced that she was resigning to become
Principal of Hooksett Elementary School.
The Guzouskas presentation was followed by an extended Public Comment
Session in which Rep. Barbara French
along with several parents who urged the
Board not to privatize the Food Service
Department at the school.
NH School Board Association Attorney
Barrette Christina then gave the Board
a briefing on the various duties of Board
Members and the administration.
Resident John Kjellman had submitted
a letter critical of the Board's handling of
the playground situation and was present
to discuss it. "I think the Board is off on the
right foot regarding the planning for and
construction of a new playground, but I
remain very concerned about the Board's
thinking about the existing playground,"
he said. "At best, (your) thinking is inconsistent, at worst I believe the Board has put
the school at risk of a huge liability, as well
as other negative consequences."
Kjellman believes in the idea that
the Wood/Metal Composite Structure
(WMCS) in the playground is safe enough
for children to play on today, but suddenly
won't be safe enough at some predetermined date this summer is preposterous.
"Either it is safe, or reasonably so, or it
isn't (without remediation)," he said.
Citing the Playground Safety Inspection
Report classifying the Suspension Bridge
as a Class A hazard (Any condition ... that
is life threatening or could cause severe,
permanent disability.): namely "GapHead
Entrapment." He said that it raises serious
concerns about the continued use of the
structure without immediate repair.
Principal Katherine McBride assured
him that those types of repairs have been
done, but Kjellman produced photos he
claims showed that they had not been
repaired.
Kjellman concluded by saying, "I think
the structure should be fixed and kept in
use. I think the report overstates the risks,
but the District's current approach to the
issue in untenable. "Life threatening" risks
on a children's playground need to be
either discontinued or eliminated as soon
as possible."

Mother’
s
Day
About the holiday...
The official Mother’s Day holiday arose
in the 1900s as a result of the efforts of
Anna Jarvis, daughter of Ann Reeves Jarvis.
Following her mother’s 1905 death, Anna
Jarvis conceived of Mother’s Day as a way
of honoring the sacrifices mothers made for
their children. After gaining financial backing from a Philadelphia department store
owner named John Wanamaker, in May
1908 she organized the first official Mother’s
Day celebration at a Methodist church in
Grafton, West Virginia. That same day also
saw thousands of people attend a Mother’s
Day event at one of Wanamaker’s retail
stores in Philadelphia.
Following the success of her first Mother’s
Day, Jarvis—who remained unmarried and
childless her whole life—resolved to see her
holiday added to the national calendar. Arguing that American holidays were biased to-
ward male achievements, she started a massive letter writing campaign to newspapers
and prominent politicians urging the adoption of a special day honoring motherhood.
By 1912 many states, towns and churches had
adopted Mother’s Day as an annual holiday,
and Jarvis had established the Mother’s Day
International Association to help promote her
cause. Her persistence paid off in 1914 when
President Woodrow Wilson signed a measure
officially establishing the second Sunday in
May as Mother’s Day.
Anna Jarvis had originally conceived of
Mother’s Day as a day of personal celebration between mothers and families.
Her version of the day involved wearing
a white carnation as a badge and visiting
one’s mother or attending church services.
But once Mother’s Day became a national
holiday, it was not long before florists, card
companies and other merchants capitalized
on its popularity.
While Jarvis had initially worked with
the floral industry to help raise Mother’s
Day’s profile, by 1920 she had become
disgusted with how the holiday had been
commercialized. She outwardly denounced
the transformation and urged people to stop
buying Mother’s Day flowers, cards and candies. Jarvis eventually resorted to an open
campaign against Mother’s Day profiteers,
speaking out against confectioners, florists
and even charities. She also launched countless lawsuits against groups that had used
the name “Mother’s Day,” eventually spending most of her personal wealth in legal fees.
By the time of her death in 1948 Jarvis had
disowned the holiday altogether, and even
actively lobbied the government to see it
removed from the American calendar.

IT’S THE LAW! FIRE PERMITS REQUIRED
The State of New Hampshire requires all persons obtain a fire permit
before starting ANY outside fire unless the ground is covered with
snow. This must be done prior to starting the fire, rain or shine.
Starting with the 2015 season, permits will be issued Monday-Friday,
8:00AM-6:00PM. Along with the new permit times brush burning
(category 2 & 3) will only be allowed on class 1 & 2 fire weather
days. Burning will NOT be allowed on class 3-5 fire weather
days for category 2 & 3. Category 1 and seasonal permits may
be used up to a class 3 fire weather day but may not be used
on class 4 and above. If you have questions or wish to obtain a fire
permit in Hillsboro, please call us at the station, 464-3477.
FIRE PERMIT CATEGORIES:
Category 1: A small controlled fire, such as a camp or cooking fire, no greater than 2’ in diameter
contained within a ring of fire resistive material or in a portable fireplace. A category 1 fire, conditions
permitting, may be kindled with a permit any time of day, raining or not.
Category 2: A controlled fire, such as a camp or cooking fire, no greater than 4’ in diameter contained
within a ring of fire resistive material or in a portable fireplace. A category 2 fire, conditions permitting,
may only be kindled with a permit between the hours of 5:00PM and 9:00AM unless it is actually raining.
Category 3: Any other fire, not a category 1 or 2 fire or a fire greater than 4’ in diameter or a fire not
contained within a ring of fire resistive material.
A category 3 fire, conditions permitting, may only be kindled with a permit between the hours of 5:00PM
and 9:00AM unless it is actually raining.
SEASONAL PERMITS: Online Seasonal Fire Permit program is new for 2015.
You can go to https://nhdflweb.sovsportsnet.net/ to obtain your seasonal permit.
• Online permits only include Category I & II permits ($3 Fee for online permits)
• You can get Category I & II permits from the Fire Station (no charge) Mon.-Fri., 8AM-6PM at the
Hillsboro Fire Station • Category III permits for burning brush issued Mon.-Fri., 8AM-6PM at the
Hillsboro Fire Station, not available online
FIRE WEATHER CLASSIFICATION:
Class 1: A day forest fire is not likely to start. LOW.
Class 2: A day the danger is MODERATE, but it is possible for fires to start in light flashy fuels but will
have a slow rate of spread.
Class 3: A day the fire danger is HIGH and fine fuels in open areas and sunny slopes may spread rapidly.
Class 4: A day the fire danger is VERY HIGH and fires will start easily from all causes. Fires will start
rapidly and increase in intensity rapidly, meaning they’ll be hard to extinquish. Spot fires may occur and,
except in spring, will burn deep.
Class 5: A day the fire danger is EXTREME. Small fires will spread very rapidly meaning they’ll be hard
to extinquish. Severe spotting may occur and mop-up will require a great deal of effort.
REMEMBER ONLY YOU CAN PREVENT FOREST FIRES
