NEW STUDENT SUCCESS CENTER
OPENS AUGUST 2015
This August, the new Student Success Center will
be opening at the Portsmouth Campus of Great Bay.
More than just a building, this one-story, 20,000
square foot addition to the existing college will
include: a gymnasium, administrative offices, a
student lounge, an exercise space, and locker rooms.
It will also house a variety of intentionally designed

ACADEMIC BOOSTERS (non-credit)
Often what keeps students progressing in their program is weak or rusty math, reading and writing skills. Great Bay offers new and
returning students the opportunity to boost their academic skills prior to the start of the fall semester. The boosters run for 3 weeks. See
the chart below for specific days, times, and locations. The boosters combine faculty instruction with online tutorials. To enroll, students
must take the ACCUPLACER assessment and then meet with an advisor. Returning students may enroll with ACCUPLACER scores
that are less than 2 years old.

Great Bay Celebrates
701945Years
Founded as the State Trade School of Portsmouth,
the mission was to provide “trade and vocational training
and retraining for the occupational adjustment of youths
and adults and particularly to provide trade school facilities
for veterans demobilized from the armed services…”
On July 17, the City of Portsmouth made space available for
rent within the Morley Button Factory. Classes started in the
fall - making this the first operating school in the system.
The first class consisted of 130 veterans of war. Fields of
study included machine tools, sheet metal, auto mechanics,
electronics and refrigeration.
1982 - 2009
The college moved to Stratham and was re-named
New Hampshire Technical College and in 2009,
moved to the Pease Tradeport in Portsmouth.
In addition to state-of-the-art classrooms and labs,
the campus also houses the Business and Training Center
(BTC) and WorkReady NH.
2015
Since 1945, Great Bay Community College has evolved to offer over
30 degree and certificate programs providing education in the sciences,
career and technical fields as well as in the liberal arts. Expanded
programs continue to prepare students for direct-entry into the
workforce or advanced degrees and transfer opportunities have grown
to include partnerships with public and private four-year institutions
both in and out of New Hampshire.
In 2013, the College opened their newest campus in Rochester the Advanced Technology & Academic Center. The center delivers
traditional academic programs as well as programs in Advanced
Composites Manufacturing, fulfilling the need for highly skilled
workers for area manufacturers.
In February of 2015, due to high demand, an additional 10,000 sq. ft.
of classroom and lab space opened at our Rochester facility.
This August, we look forward to the opening of our new Student
Success Center at our Portsmouth Campus.

Online Course Info
Online courses are a great alternative to campus-based classes, but before you jump in, review the following tips so you are making an INFORMED decision. Online classes require that you...
►► Possess strong time management skills. You will need to organize your schedule to meet assignment deadlines.
►► Communicate frequently with your instructor and fellow classmates. This means you must know how to access your student email.
►► Plan on putting aside the same amount of time for your online course as you would for a face-to-face course. In fact, online courses can be
even more demanding of your time, so be prepared.
►► Log onto Blackboard, your course management site, at least weekly to read new announcements, complete discussion boards, track assignments, etc. Online classes do have an attendance requirement that is demonstrated through your participation on the site as well as
through submission of assignments.
►► Have access to a reliable, up to date computer with a high speed internet connection and word processing software.
►► Be proactive and seek help when needed. For help with course content, email your instructor and/or visit the
CAPSwebsite: www.greatbay.edu/caps For technical assistance, visit the help desk: www.greatbay.edu/helpdesk
►► All classes may include an online component.
