Greenville Public Library 2015 Summer Reading Program Every Hero Has a Story (July 6 - August 28) 966-8205 This summer the Greenville Library will be offering a variety of programs for children. Activities will range from workshops and programs for elementary, middle schoolers and teens. Visit the library this summer and let your child discover the adventure and fun of choosing books from the library’s collections and at the same time have fun participating in all of the activities we have planned for them. Reading Folders for the Summer Reading Program will be available in the Children’s Room at the Library. We’ll also have the Guessing Jar, candy to pick for books added to your Reading Folder and prizes for points collected. Teens & Tweens(9 and up) - Each time they bring back a book to the library that they’ve read, they can fill out a coupon for several end of Summer Prize Drawings. June 30, July 21, Aug. 11, Sept. 1 Teen Book Club Write-Up Ages 11 – 18 9:00 – 11:00 Instructor: Melissa Gergen During these four scheduled days, participants will be able to share and discuss books they have been able to read with other members of the group. During the second hour of each scheduled time, students will be given the chance to respond to short writing prompts and complete activities to further engage them in their love of reading, writing and creating. Participants do not need to be present at each meeting. Registration required. Who’s Your Hero! Ages 4 – 7 9:00 – 10:30 Instructors: G.S. Troop 1568 Every hero has a story, and every person has a hero. Using materials provided, you will be making a booklet and other crafts about your favorite hero. Girl Scout Troop 1568, will also have storytime about some of our favorite hero’s. Bring your own storybook to share. Registration required. July 6 July 6, 7, 8 ACTing Up Ages 3 – 5 (Only July 6, will be from 10:45 – 11:30) 10:00 – 10:45 Instructor: Jessica Coons Enjoy a fun and interactive class that will help boost your child’s confidence and creativity. He/she will enter an environment that will allow them to explore their individuality through story-time, song, dance and movement. This class will help enhance communication skills and provide the opportunity for your child to learn to interact with other children; all while ACTing Up! Registration required. Create a Stained Glass Dove Ages 10 & up 1:00 – 3:00 OR 3:30 – 5:30 Instructor: Connie Pruiksma The instructor will supply a variety of multicolored parts to create a Dove. Participants will learn to solder them to create their own stained glass piece. If anyone is uncomfortable soldering, the instructor will do it for you. Registration required. July 8 July 9, 23, 30, Aug. 13, 20, 27 Introduction to Gymnastics Ages 4 – 7 3:00 – 3:45 or 4:00 – 4:45 Instructor: Alexa Gymnastics is a great sport for teaching kids that exercise & staying fit can be fun. Any age and ability can be taught the basics of gymnastics, while building self-esteem, social skills and fitness. July 13 – 16 Pioneer Living First – Fifth Graders 10:00 – 11:30 Cornell Cooperative Extension 4H Youth will learn about the lives of the early pioneers and the hard work it took to survive on the frontier. They will make products that they would now normally buy at the store, such as butter, a paper quilt, ice cream, and soap. They will see how pioneer children kept themselves entertained before televisions and video games. They will have fun learning how life used to be. Registration required. First – Fifth Graders 12:30 – 2:00 Cornell Cooperative Extension 4H In “Every (STEM) Hero Has a Story” groups read a sto-ry together and then participate in hands-on activities, where youth will be supplied with the tools to gain a better understanding of birds and oil spill clean-up, trees and conservation, bridge-building, air and flight and much more. July 29 August 3 Climbing Wall, Bounce House & Some Small Animals All Ages 5:00 – 6:30 Come to the library and have some fun! Come climb the massive 24’ rock wall. It has 4 sides and offers 16 different climbing routes, of varying difficulty. It’s great for all abilities and all ages. You can also enjoy the bounce house. Kids love to jump around and have fun. August 4 – 5 Basic Jewelry Making Grades 6 – 12 4:30 – 6:00 Instructor: Hope Konecny Instructor Hope Konency will teach some basics of jewelry making – sawing and filing, working with different metals (copper, brass and sterling silver), beads in designs for pendants/necklaces and found objects. Ideas and techniques for putting it all together will be discussed. Create your own design and incorporate it into a piece of wearable art. Students should bring paper and pencil. From scavenger hunts and animal crackers to wildlife bingo games, youth will have a blast while building a valuable knowledge base about the world around us. Well, great news! It's stuffed animal sleepover night at the library! Bring in your stuffed bedtime buddy to join other toys for a sleepover. We'll share some stories, have a snack and make name tags. Get them ready for bed, than leave them overnight for their very own library sleepover with other stuffie friends.
