Over time, national, state, and civic leaders began to formally recognize The Guardsmen’s efforts and its vision for impacting youth through enhanced opportunities.” OUR BEGINNING 2014-2015 Senior Board Members, Kevin Murray, Justin Hildebrandt, Adam Buttery, and Michael Piro celebrate the new fiscal year at The Guardsmen’s annual Changing of the Guard event. Dear Friends and Supporters, On behalf of The Guardsmen and the children in our community whose lives we aim to enrich, and with great appreciation to all who participated and supported our efforts over the past year, it is my pleasure to present to you The Guardsmen Annual Report for our 2013-2014 fiscal year. With the help of our families, friends and colleagues from the private, non-profit, and business sectors, our all-volunteer membership has worked hard to create awareness for our purpose and raise funds in support of our mission. Our Strategic Fundraising Committee and newly created Development Department continues to renew and strengthen existing relationships with our donors while identifying and cultivating new funding sources to expand our network and increase our revenue in order to positively impact the lives of more children, our future leaders. Even so, we continue to fall short of providing camping and private school opportunities to all the Bay Area children who could benefit from these experiences. As a result, fiscal year 2015 will prove to be a year of great challenge for our organization to cultivate interest for our mission and raise the necessary funds to keep our Campership and Scholarship Programs thriving, and we encourage your support. We are hopeful that after reviewing this report you will fully understand the significance of The Guardsmen as a community service organization and the valuable role you play in our success. Should you have questions or wish to provide direct funding to The Guardsmen please contact our Treasurer, Robert Flowers, your Guardsmen friends, Director of Development Heather Brewer, or me. Thank you again for support. Kevin W. Murray 69th President 2014-2015 BOARD OF DIRECTORS AND OFFICERS Kevin W. Murray President Justin S. Hildebrandt 1st Vice President Adam Buttery Vice President Michael R. Piro Vice President/Secretary 2 Patrick J. Gilligan William R. Mastrangelo Will H. Parker Tyson R. Stevenson Andrew Gall Ryan Nail Justin Monfredini John Pettus In 1947 a group of young San Francisco professionals, who were to become known as The Guardsmen, joined together to help disadvantaged children in the Bay Area. These young men recognized that they were among the most fortunate members of society, who had good careers, loving families, and many opportunities – past, present, and future. They decided they had a responsibility to “give back” in the interest of individual children, and society at large. They were concerned that although at-risk youth were provided basic necessities and helped by existing civic and community agencies, many children had no opportunity to experience life outside the confines of an often harsh inner-city environment. Beyond this desire to give back, these founding members of The Guardsmen also enjoyed the camaraderie that came from working together. The Guardsmen recognized that they could combine fun, fellowship and fundraising. To this end, The Guardsmen began hosting fundraising events – dinners, raffles, a Christmas Tree Lot – in order to raise money for local children’s charities and programs. Membership of The Guardsmen was established entirely through word-of-mouth, and the organization quickly became a network of talented young individuals committed to building stronger communities. Over time, national, state, and civic leaders began to formally recognize The Guardsmen’s efforts and its vision for impacting youth through enhanced opportunities. The Crystal Plunge Swimming Team was one of the first recipients of support when The Guardsmen helped them travel to Chicago to compete in the AAU championships. Several of the team’s members went on to win gold medals at the 1948 Olympics. The Guardsmen’s first efforts revolved around the importance of athletics and outdoor activities. Early Guardsmen members recognized that children atrisk benefited from a mentor relationship, particularly if it was cultivated in a setting conducive todeveloping friendships (ex: “the great outdoors”). Thus, The Guardsmen began a program that thrives today in order to send at-risk children and youth to summer camp: The Guardsmen Campership Program. During a strategic review on the 50th anniversary of the organization in 1998, The Guardsmen identified a need for improved educational choices for at-risk youth, many of whom were lost in an unresponsive and dysfunctional education system that only reinforced cycles of poverty and violence. To address this need, The Guardsmen Scholarship Program was created in order to provide partial private school scholarships for at-risk children and youth. Adam Wright Counsel Bill Dentino Asst. In 2013-2014 The Kimball Foundation generously granted $25,000 to our Campership and Scholarship Programs, bringing their cumulative giving total to $225,000. The Kimball Foundation provides opportunities for the at-risk and disadvantaged youth in the Bay Area to improve the quality of their lives and reach their highest potential. The foundation’s focus areas include College Access and Persistence, Cultural Enrichment, Environmental Education, and Vocational & Workplace Skills. 14 Every year, The Boys & Girls Clubs of San Francisco match 100 girls with 100 women, and 100 boys with 100 men, for two one-day “buddy” events filled with fun and games. This year’s theme was Time Machine where kids and their buddies explored bowling during the Ice Age and made Tetris puzzles. They also went way back and built Ancient Egyptian pyramids together. Kids also wrote letters to their future selves in the time capsule station. The Guardsmen was happy to attend Boys Night Out again this year and look forward to many more to come! CHILDREN HELPING CHILDREN: A SPECIAL THANK YOU TO MARK DAY SCHOOL Every year the graduating class at Mark Day School (formerly St. Mark’s School) in San Rafael fundraises in various and creative ways in order to donate the proceeds to one international charity as well as one local charity. This year The Guardsmen was honored to be selected by the students as a recipient of a $2,000 grant for our Campership and Scholarship Programs. Keep up the great work, kids! MOST MEMORABLE FUNDRAISING MOMENT OF 2013-2014 At the end of each year The Guardsmen hosts a Fund Drive Wrap Up event to celebrate the results of the year’s fundraising efforts. This year the Fund Drive Wrap Up was held at At&t Park, allowing members to channel their inner Willie Mays and Barry Bonds by taking batting practice and fielding balls. The highlight of this year’s event was a homerun by member Ryan Prosser, whose accomplishment generated $5,000 in donations by his fellow members. Congratulations to Ryan and to our kids! MEMBER EVENTS HIGHLIGHTS CYO CAMP ARMSTRONG In July of 2014 The Guardsmen was hosted once again by the incredible staff at CYO Camp Armstrong. Tucked in Armstrong Woods outside of downtown Occidental in Sonoma County, the property is an amazing countryside setting just a 90 minute drive from busy San Francisco. The Guardsmen members and their families got to spend a day visiting with campers who had just begun their week-long session at the overnight camp. After spending lunch together, The Guardsmen worked alongside the campers to coordinate food pick up, setting the tables and, ultimately, clean up. Everyone enjoyed skits put on by each cabin, as well as the multiple camp facilities, including the swimming pool and archery range. We’re already looking forward to next year and will be hard at work fundraising to support as many campers as possible. A PRIVATE LUNCH WITH JOHN STUMPF This year CEO of Wells Fargo Bank and “2013 Banker of the Year”, John Stumpf, graciously offered one lucky auction winner a personal lunch with him, including a private chef in the Wells Fargo board room and a behind-the-scenes tour of the Wells Fargo Museum, personally led by Mr. Stumpf himself. With the help of CharityBuzz, Mr. Stumpf was able to raise a whopping $22,800 for The Guardsmen’s programs! A huge thank you to Mr. Rande Johnsen who was this auction’s winning bidder – because of Mr. Johnsen we were able to send 40 more children to summer camp and provide 8 more students with scholarships. Campers must be ages 6-17, reside in the Bay Area, and meet the Alaska Reduced School Lunch Program financial guidelines in order to be eligible for a Guardsmen Campership. LAURA, 16 YEARS OLD CAMP HIGHLIGHT: CAMP OZIKU QUICK FACTS: 2,121 children received a Guardsmen Campership “She feels more confident and empowered when she returns. I think she worries a lot less about cancer and is more positive for a healthy future.” – Parent of an 11 year-old Oncology Camp Camper 18 Okizu (oak-eye-zoo) comes from the Sioux language and means unity, to come together, to heal from a hurt, to make whole. The mission of Okizu is to provide peer support, respite, mentoring, and recreational programs to meet the needs of all members of families affected by childhood cancer. For more than 33 years, Okizu has been committed to the continuing support of the Oncology, Siblings, Family, Bereavement, and Teens-N-Twenties programs. These programs are the result of a collaborative effort between Okizu and the pediatric oncology treatment centers in Northern California. The specific purpose of Okizu is to operate peer support programs for children and families affected by childhood cancer based on the communityforming nature of a residential camp experience. Children who are diagnosed with cancer miss a normal childhood. Their illness, treatment, and complications can keep them from enjoying activities that often are taken for granted. And yet these children, like all children, need the opportunity to grow, experiment, and discover independence. Okizu began with the belief that a residential camp can be an ideal setting for children struggling with cancer to explore and enjoy a normal life experience, while interacting with others who truly understand their illness. Okizu quickly learned that all family members, including the ill child, parents, and siblings, are impacted in powerful and unique ways by childhood cancer. The opportunity for interactions with true peers and the strong sense of community fostered by a residential camp environment provide valuable emotional and practical support for continuing the cancer journey, while also allowing everyone to take a break from their routine and have a great time. $526,370 was allocated to 16 partner agencies 17,545 total days of camp After years of sexual abuse against this young woman, Laura’s mother had arranged to relocate to another state. During her first session at Camp Mendocino her father, who had chosen to overlook the abuse, claimed to custody officials that his children were being kidnapped and relocated against his will. This led to a volatile legal case and home environment. Laura was signed up for one session at Camp, however, upon invitation she stayed for an additional 40 days in order to avoid the harmful situation she would inevitably face at home. She went home the morning of her court case. Within just a few days of leaving Camp, the courts allowed her and her siblings to relocate. DESIREE, 12 YEARS OLD This young lady was one of the many Sunnydale community members that were present at the volatile shooting that took place very near the Boys & Girls Clubhouse in that neighborhood. Desiree lives with her sister and her mother. Her father has been hospitalized for the majority of her life. She is given very little motivation or encouragement in life, however she exhibits an amazing amount of intrinsic motivation to excel. After the trauma of the shooting she was withdrawn, and not her usual joyful, engaging and helpful self. She remained at Camp for 30 days, and was able to recapture her joyful self despite the depravity she faced at home. 15 other youth from Sunnydale attended Camp this summer. Eight of which stayed for between two and four sessions. The healing power of nature, a caring staff of youth developers, self-esteem gained from skill development, and the lifelong connections made at Camp made a difference for this group of young people that can never be measured. Every time the San Francisco 49ers score a touchdown or field goal or record an interception or sack, Touchdowns for Kids makes a donation to improve the lives of at-risk Bay Area youth. Since its inception in 2011, TFK has provided more than $1 million to 15 youth organizations. The Guardsmen is proud to support the 49ers commitment to our community’s youth and applauds its success both on and off the field. Through our long-established partner agencies, we know the children for whom we provide financial assistance are giving the best environment possible to learn, play, and thrive. Guardsmen 365 bridges the gap between these programs by seamlessly giving more children the opportunity to receive both a Campership and a Scholarship. The Guardsmen plans to grow Guardsmen 365 by providing additional support for after school programs, tutoring sessions, school uniforms, and other school supplies. “Anthony is my maternal nephew and his 4 year old brother and 3 year old sister have been in my care for 3 months due to substance abuse and domestic violence issues. He has been through a lot but he is a loving and selfless, funny, smart, and sensitive child. My hope is that he gains confidence at camp, makes friends and comes out of his shell.” Golden Gate Boys Choir & Bellringers Lighthouse for the Blind & Visually Impaired San Francisco Boys Chorus San Mateo Sheriff’s Office – S.T.A.R. In order to maximize The Guardsmen Scholarship, committee members decided, and the Board of Directors agreed, that setting greater expectations for our partner schools would give our Scholarship recipients a far better chance at breaking the cycles of poverty, furthering their education, and setting themselves up for success. The Guardsmen now currently partners with 25 schools instead of 75 and will continue to annually choose to partner with those schools that are in line with The Guardsmen’s mission, produce high performance and graduation rates, and provide positive environments for their students to learn and thrive. the child education achievement gap in the Bay Area. Ryan is 12 years old and currently has been diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia in January 2014. He always wanted to go to St. John’s School. I am happy that he now has this opportunity. Ryan will be able to be with me, and I will have the peace of mind knowing that he will be alright because I would always be there to check on him at school. I am very happy that my brother and Mission Dolores Academy is an independent Catholic K-8 school with a history that dates to 1852, making it the oldest private school in San Francisco. It provides a world-class primary education to children from throughout the Bay Area with an emphasis on educating underserved youth. 85% of its students receive some form of financial aid, 60% qualify for federal free/reduced lunch, and over half will be the first in their family to graduate from college. day hours where doors open at 7am and close at 6pm, allowing additional learning opportunities that students cannot get from schools with shorter, traditional hours. By incorporating this pioneering, educational concept with these extended hours, Mission Dolores Academy has an amazing success rate, with approximately 83% of graduates moving on to private or charter schools. I have this opportunity. Recently my brother was accepted in a public school that I felt was not the best environment for him because they may have not accepted my brother for who he was and for his illness. It would break my heart if he were teased or bullied. Now he has the chance to go to St. John’s school, a welcoming and heartwarming community where he will be accepted for who he is and what he has because St. John’s is a Catholic community and welcomes everybody. My family and I are very grateful because we are going through financial issues right now ever since my brother became ill. He has to keep going back and forth to the hospital. The medical expenses and bills have been very challenging for my family, but my Mom and Dad do their best for us. I am very thankful for that. We are a family of six, it is me, Ryan and my 7 year old Mission Dolores Academy, located in the heart of San Francisco’s Mission District, recreated its curriculum in 2011 by integrating online learning with traditional classroom instruction to establish a “blended learning” program. By utilizing this data-driven program, students benefit from a rigorous academic schedule with state-ofthe-art online lessons, combined with traditional teacher-led small group instruction. Furthermore, Mission Dolores Academy better serves its students by providing them with extended school twin brothers Sean and Andrew. My dad misses a lot of hours of work because he needs to be available for my brother. In 2013-2014 The Guardsmen was proud to award 18 Mission Dolores Academy students with a scholarship.
