Recent performance by acrobat Li Liu who is
scheduled to perform at kickoff event.
Hamden Libraries officially kick off our annual
Summer Reading Program at 7 p.m. on Wednesday,
June 24th with a performance by Chinese Acrobat Li
Liu on the stage of Thornton Wilder Hall. Families
with children of all ages are invited to attend (see page 4
for a complete listing of programs). No registration is
needed to attend the program.
Nationally, library summer reading programs are recognized as an effective way to maintain children’s reading
skills during the long summer hiatus from their classrooms. Hamden’s Summer Reading Game is endorsed
by the Hamden Public Schools and can be played in
conjunction with reading required by local schools and
the Governor’s Summer Reading Challenge.
Participants keep track of the time they spend reading
either on a reading log or online through the library’s
website. At designated intervals readers qualify for
prizes which serve as an incentive to continue reading.
This year’s Summer Reading Program concludes with a
performance by drummer Craig Norton at 7 p.m. on
Wednesday, August 12.
Additional summer performers (from top): Craig
Norton, Steve Weeks and Sparky’s Puppets

Staff Development Day: All three Hamden Libraries will be closed on Wednesday, June 10, to
provide library staff the opportunity to develop
and expand their professional skills. Staff members will attend a variety of in-house workshops
and participate in projects and discussions designed to improve library service.
Milestones: Two library staff members recently
celebrated their graduations from local colleges.
Rebecca Coates, Library Technical Assistant in
the Technical Services Department, received a

State University, while Children’s Clerk Lucy
Freeman graduated with a bachelor’s degree
from Quinnipiac University. Congratulations!
Progress Report: It is expected that the longawaited addition of a family bathroom in the
