e x p a n d i n g h o r i zon s Annual Report 2013-2014 A Greeting From Our President … Dear Friends and Supporters of Handi-Crafters, We accomplished another solid year here at Handi-Crafters. Our mission is very strong as we are looking to understand and find our place in the future. In closing the 2014 fiscal year, I know I speak for the entire Board in saying that we are incredibly grateful to all of our terrific donors, our loyal friends, sponsors and our customers for their significant contributions throughout the year. We review monthly the details of our performance in our meetings and we are thankful for the financial assistance we receive from you all in sustaining our mission. We also appreciate the customers who choose a socially responsible path to meet their production and assembly needs. Over 400 pairs of hands are at Handi-Crafters efficiently managing and adhering to deadlines and quality. Our #1 goal is to make our customers happy with our consistent quality. We couldn’t be more proud of the work that we accomplish for those who sign on to use our services each year. As this fiscal year winds down to a close our Board will re-organize and it is my honor to welcome Karen Ladd Baker as President in 2015. Karen and her family are very dedicated to Handi-Crafters. Karen joined the Board of Directors after the passing of her father Keith Ladd in 2009, a loyal member of the Board for more than a decade. Karen’s professional guidance and expertise in strategic business management, her dedication, and her historical understanding of Handi-Crafters infrastructure will yield significant dividends for the Organization under her leadership in 2015 and beyond. Respectfully, Donald Sheldon 1 As we express our gratitude, we must never forget that the highest appreciation is not to utter words, but to live by them. John F. Kennedy Annual Report 2013-2014 e x p a n di ng ho r i z o n s The Mission of Handi-Crafters is to provide employment opportuni es and other suppor ve services for individuals with disabili es or barriers to be produc ve workers and develop greater self esteem. Expanding Horizons by Amy Rice, Executive Director ... Our industry, services for disabled adults is facing a critical moment in its history. Many providers will find it difficult or impossible to comply with the demands being required of them. Fortunately Handi-Crafters is already “ahead of the game.” We have a very active Community Employment Department. Over the years we have placed more than 100 individuals in a variety of positions working in the community. Our Employment Specialists are expanding these services; adding specific in-house trainings such as, “The World of Work Career Preparation and Computer Training.” Our Mobile Work Crew Program helps to bridge the gap between Center Based Employment and Community Employment. Individuals are afforded the opportunity to work in the community while still under the supervision of Handi-Crafters staff. Our on-going effort is to continuously build solid partnerships with area businesses. Moving into the future, we will continue to strengthen and expand our Community Employment services. We will also be creating new employment opportunities and expanding traditional ones. Our Center Based Employment will be enlarged to provide opportunities to the non-disabled community. Along with in-house projects, we plan to develop projects that will take our consumers into the community at large, expanding horizons. Handi-Crafters moves into the future following our mission to provide a “choice of employment Some of our clients who have found great jobs opportunities” to individuals with disabilities or barriers.” Photographs above… with great employers in the community. 2 Our Signature Fund-Raising Event 2014 … Handi-Cra ers Annual Fund-Raiser was held at Longwood Gardens on Friday, April 4th, 2014. Our clients are living longer. Re rement becomes an op on and a needed service for older adults with a disability.” This year 62 clients spent their days in the OADLC said Linda Zimmerman, Program Director. “We are very ac ve here in the Center. The philosophy is that clients who have spent a generous amount of their life me and career at Handi-Cra ers, can con nue the rou ne of coming to “work.” While they have aged-out of the workforce, they s ll enjoy life with friends at Handi-Cra ers.” The goal for each day is to engage clients in ac vi es that encourage mobility, s mula on, fun and learning. Clients par cipate in weekly music therapy, dance, bowling and art classes and they take monthly day trips to local parks, orchards, and other a rac ons. Zimmerman and her staff work with clients under a ra o of 1 staff members to 6 client. “This is to ensure proper supervision and care.” Enjoying Our Growing Gardens This year, OADLC Ac vity Aide, Rynzo Harris revived the above ground planters to engage his clients in gardening exercises. The project was a huge hit. Harris was able to begin his plan ng plan in partnership with The Chester County Food Bank and got started by filling the 13 planters with a wonderful variety of vegetables. Harris had lots of helping hands from his clients and they enjoyed the yields of le uce, beets, broccoli, tomato's, onions and kale! Harris says, they are already planning for the Spring of 2015. The crops raised were enjoyed for lunches and donated to the Food Bank. 6 Expanding Skills in the Skill Development Center ... Ray and Pru Vito are Workshop Supervisors, together the husband and wife team have nearly 30 years experience working at HandiCrafters. Workshop Supervisors are responsible for the daily operations and oversight of their workshop. There are sixteen {16} workshops at Handi-Crafters, each having approximately 15 clients on the workshop team. Workshop Supervisors work hand-in-hand with clients in their shop to coach, chart productivity and encourage growth. The Vito’s describe a regular work day in the shop as busy, efficient and with concentration on building individual skill sets of each client. “Everyone in this shop, like all shop at Handi-Crafters, really takes pride in what they do. As Supervisors, we strive to encourage independent working and to meet expectations that any employee would have to meet.” What it boils down to is personal development and personal fulfillment. Acquiring good work skills so clients can make a transition into competitive employment if that is the goal. Each workshop at Handi-Crafters instills the philosophy of encouraging each client to grow and develop to their fullest potential. Clients come to Handi-Crafters from various backgrounds with disabilities that have at points in their lives caused barriers to employment. “Working at Handi-Crafters is safe and builds confidence.” Pru continued. She and Ray point out Stanley Fountain, a 3-year member of their team. “Stanley arrives well before the doors open with his ambitious work ethic.” He is expanding his skills by working hard, doing a great job for Handi-Crafters. He hopes that one day he can achieve his goal to be an engineer. 7 Dino Tarashi, one of Stanley’s co-workers is working on learning new skills, maintaining a healthy routine so he can return to a job in the community. “I’ve developed patience and respect and acceptance, said Tarashi. I come to work and put in an honest day.” Derquisha Lane’s ambitions helped her widen her skill set to warehouse operations where she has helped with loading skids. Derquisha also worked with her Employment Specialist and landed a second job at Good Will Industries. Ray and Pru handle a very busy work schedule in their shop and a variety of production and assembly work. Every individual has a piece of the job, explains Pru. We breakdown the project into parts and everyone on the team has a role, a piece of the job that meets their individual skill level. Collectively each has a role in achieving the deadline of the project. The shop is primarily responsible for completing the on-going orders for Crazy Aaron’s Thinking Putty. They cut, measure, label, seal and pack the putty to perfection for retail shelves. Last year they produced nearly 9,000 lbs. into nearly 165-thousand packages. “I love my Job” said Will Mullin. Mullin has been working at Handi-Crafters and recalls October 25, 1982 as the day he started. “Will works hard, its obvious that he loves his job, “ said the Vitos. They take a look around the workshop. They are humbled, accounting for everyone on their team complimenting strengths and positive growth. It’s obvious that a Workshop Supervisor isn’t just a Workshop Supervisor, they are a mentor, a coach, a trusted friend and a part of a family. 8 Customers Who Choose Socially Responsible Outsourcing to meet their business goals ... BPG INTERNATIONAL Is a global innovation company that has created and mass produced over 600 new products. BPG relied on Handi-Crafters to convert 3 packs of air fresheners into 2 packs. The custom trays for the blister pack machine, ordered by BPG, did not fit. Handi-Crafters took charge, worked with the designer of the trays and made sure BPG had the correct trays when production day arrived. Handi-Crafters produced 25,000 packs of fragrance hangers in 10 days. The Quality Control team at BPG was impressed with our cleanliness and attention to detail. We were given an A-1 rating. B-LIT Entrepreneur DERRYMORE PROJECT MANAGEMENT SERVICES This year we completed 12 large scale projects for Derrymore. Keith Hughes has truly become a fixture here at HC. Our motto for his (and all) projects is “Flexible and Adaptable!” Keith specializes in managing large scale print promotional items for nationally recognized brands. These projects come to him, and subsequently to us with short notice, high volumes and missing components. Didn’t I say flexible and adaptable? We pride ourselves in customer satisfaction and will go the extra mile. Derrymore has grown into a being one of our top 5 customers! 9 Ken Brown came to Hand-Crafters when he needed 5,000 of his unique flashlight holders assembled. Ken came in to the shop and worked side-by-side with the production team to assist in getting the product out, and on time. SARA GALLO JEWELRY International Jeweler and Artist, Sara Gallo brought more than 75,000 pairs of shoes to Handi-Crafters to prep for the final destination into bracelets, necklaces, earrings and more. Gallo’s exclusive “Doll Shoe Series” is sold in boutiques across the world. Loyal Royal, A Handi-Crafters Customer for Over 50 Years ... More than fifty years ago Barry Milberg found out about a workshop in Thorndale that would do assembly and production work for businesses. The workforce was comprised of local individuals with special needs. Milberg’s family owned and operated a successful paper product supply company in Coatesville. Milberg decided to pair the two entities and the rest is history. In this contemporary age of outsourcing, Royal Paper has many options to choose but a decades old partnership still holds. “It’s a win for both partners,” said Russ Glazer, General Manager at Royal Paper. “We could not accomplish the work that we need done without Handi-Crafters.” Mariana Tarau is Director of Production Services at Handi-Crafters and appreciates Royal Paper for their years of dedication as a steady customer. “We regularly do the re-packs, labeling and creating sample pieces for Royal. The work is steady year round and taking place in two or three workshops with a few days of turnaround on the job.” This year Handi-Crafters managed production on twenty-one (21) different projects including the repack of knot-pick cases and labeling of product packages for Amazon sales. Glazer says Handi-Crafters can do the work much more efficiently then they could internally. He also endorses Handi-Crafters attention to quality. Handi-Crafters receives the product and ships back to the company who’s address will change this spring when Royal Paper moves to a new facility in Exton. The company will be re-locating all operations to the 180,000 sq. ft headquarters and distribution center which has grown to supply a line of over 1000 products for the foodservice, hospitality and janitorial industries. Royal Paper’s first job for Handi-Crafters was packaging Scouring Pads. Royal Paper was one of the first companies to introduce paper coffee and beverage coasters and wooden toothpicks. Royal Paper was also one of the first to introduce lobster bibs and the zodiac sign, conversational restaurant placemats. Their products can be found from coast to coast. 10 We Are Truly Honored by Your Support ... 1675 Foundation Anonymous ~ in memory of Donna W.
