Parents should plan to arrive promptly at their chosen drop off/pick up location. Questions regarding transportation can be directed to the Transportation Department at (804) 365-6520. REGISTRATION & PAYMENT Registration begins May 4, 2015. Completed forms should be submitted to the student’s school counselor by June 12. After June 12, registrations will be accepted only at Liberty Middle School; no registrations will be accepted after June 16. Students interested in registering for high school courses should contact a counselor for a 2015 High School Summer School Registration Form. TUITION Tuition is due at time of registration. Please make checks payable to student’s home school; however, for registrations being submitted after June 12, checks should be made payable to Liberty Middle School. No refunds will be given after July 1, 2015. Students are allowed to take up to two (2) courses during summer school (June 22 - August 5, 2015). If a second course is taken, tuition must be charged for the second course only. The Middle School Summer Program is held in two sessions: June 22-July 14 (Session I) and July 15-August 5 (Session II), Monday through Thursday. Times are 7:30am - 1:00pm. The Patrick Henry High School Library Media Center will be open and staffed by a certified librarian during summer school hours. The Cafeteria will not be open during the summer. Students may bring snacks or purchase them at school during designated breaks. Students staying at Patrick Henry HS for both morning and afternoon sessions should plan to bring a lunch from home. Artrageous! Ceramics (SU33) Do you like to get your hands dirty? Come work in the mud during this ceramics experience. Students will develop functional and non-functional 3-D ceramic forms, which will be finished with glazes and/or paints. Handbuilding methods and wheel throwing techniques will be demonstrated. How about learning to design your own? In this class, we will learn to make a 2-D video game, designing the characters, settings, controls, music and sound. We’ll also learn about (and play!) important games from the “art history” of video games, as well as games made by independent artists working today. Printmaking (SU34) Students will learn about the development of printmaking and incorporate traditional and contemporary printmaking methods into their own works. From carving printing blocks, to cutting stencils, to manipulating a range of surfaces for prints, students will explore a variety of printmaking processes while learning the fundamentals of this ancient art form. (Enrollment: min. 12; max. 16) July 20-30, 2015; 8:00am - 12:30pm $175, residents; $225 non-residents Artrageous! Surface Design (SU35) Have you ever wanted to create your own fabric? Join us as we explore a variety of design techniques from handdyeing and printing to embroidery and quilting. Students will explore composition and color theory using several dye painting techniques to create hand-dyed fabrics. Then they will use the newly created fabrics to create pieces of functional or non-functional fine craft works. (Enrollment: min. 12; max. 16) June 22 - July 1, 2015; 8:00am - 12:30pm $175, residents; $225 non-residents ENRICHMENT COURSES, continued: Bridges to Algebra (EL50) This course is designed to support students transitioning to Algebra I from Math 7. Foundational skills in the areas of expressions, equations, functions, and graphing will be strengthened, as well as building background knowledge in algebraic topics not addressed in the Math 7 curriculum. This course is a combination of in-class and at-home study. Students will meet 3 days a week for 2 consecutive weeks with the expectation of practice and reinforcement outside of class through support materials and online resources. Session I: June 30, July 1-2 and July 7-9, 2015 Session II: July 14-16 and July 21-23, 2015 7:30am - 1:00pm $125, residents only Keyboarding (SU36) Students will develop basic keyboarding skills in this course with an emphasis on the development of proper keyboarding technique, speed, and accuracy. This course will be held at the Hanover County Specialty Center located at Hanover HS; transportation provided from Liberty and Stonewall Jackson Middle Schools. * Rising 7th and 8th graders ONLY August 10-13, 2015; Choose one session: Session I: 9:00am - 12:00pm Session II: 1:00pm - 4:00pm $60, residents only ESL Tutorial (SU01) Students learning English as a Second Language (ESL) will improve their skills in reading, writing, and speaking in English through the immersion experience of English 6, 7, 8. Each ESL student will attend and participate in the English class necessary for his/her appropriate grade placement. The teacher will provide each ESL student with feedback regarding his/her progress in learning to read, write, and speak in English. June 22 - July 23, 2015; 7:30am - 1:00pm No charge, residents only “Middle School Jump Start” - Organization & Study Skills for 6th Graders* (SU37) Would you like to know why homework takes you so long? Have you ever asked, “If I’m so smart, why is concentrating so difficult?” Have you wondered how to really prepare for a test? If you are interested in truly being successful in school, this is the session for you. You will learn how to use graphic-organizers and how to simplify your note-taking. You will understand when to underline and how to summarize. This session will help you to focus and to manage your time more efficiently. You will leave the final session empowered with organization and study skills and ready for the 20152016 school year. *Rising 6th graders ONLY July 6-9, 2015; 8:00am - 12:00pm $65, residents only STEM+H - Health Science Camp (SU42) Learn about the extent of human skills at the Science Museum of Virginia’s Boost! Gallery, and then create skeletal models learning about the complex structure of the human body.
