Maybelle Carter
American Musical Legend by Nina Et cetera
Friday, March 13th,
7:00 PM
Maybelle Carter

in a number of styles,
inventing a style which

was a multi-instrumentalist and a composer
of many songs. She
was a core member
of the Carter Family, the first family of Country Music, who
enjoyed tremendous popularity and success during the
Great Depression. The Carters collected backwoods music, recorded hits, composed, toured extensively, and are
an enduring influence to this day.
Nina Et cetera will tell her story with illustrative songs, musical examples, and other lore from the period. Music from the
Carters as well as those they influenced like Johnny Cash,

Symphony of the Soil
Documentary Film Screening and Discussion
Thursday, March 26th, 6:30 PM
The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) has
declared 2015 International Year of
Soils. This has many implications, not
the least of which is a major worldwide
philosophical shift from chemical based
agricultural practices to holistic, organic
soil management practices. To commemorate this, we invite you to join us
for Symphony of the Soil, an extraordinary documentary film by renowned filmmaker Deborah
Koons Garcia, which explicates soil as a dynamic, living,
biological system which requires human care and understanding if we are to continue living and growing food
on Earth. The screening of this film will be accompanied
by lively discussion and an audience participation question and answer session. A panel of local, knowledgeable
speakers will include Dylan Licopoli, owner of Home Organic Gardening Service, Master Gardener, Permaculture
Designer and sustainability educator, Regina Dlugokencky,
owner of Seedsower Farm, organic market gardener and
local food movement/sustainability advocate, Rev. Bruce
D. Roberg, organic gardener, soil steward, Energy Practitioner, and holistic living advocate; Dr. Barbara Bolen,
psychologist, organic gardener, and food/nutrition educator and author, and Mick Makinajian, owner of Makinajian
Farm, a third-generation organic family farm and grocery
store. Registration is not required.
“This film raises the bar. It makes you care about our Earth’s precious skin, so
rare among planets.” –Washington Post

What is Hypnosis?
Irish Scones
Monday, March 9th, 7:00 PM
Thursday, March 12th, 7:00 PM
Say the word hypnosis and it conjures up images of a
shadowy figure entrancing people to be under a spell. From
that image alone, you might be surprised to find that hypnosis
isn’t magical or mystical....and that it actually helps people with
regular self-improvement goals.
Learn what hypnosis is, how it works and the many ways
you can use it. Tina Pineiro, your facilitator and guide, is a
hypnotist, instructor and presenter who has been entrancing
clients for many years to help them quit smoking, lose weight,
lower their blood pressure, and more. Please register.
Join The Baking Coach, Lisa Basini and learn how to make
perfect Irish scones. You will participate in a hands-on class
and go home with your scones to bake at home. In-person
registration is accepted at the Reference Desk and limited to
Harborfields Library cardholders through March 5th. There is a
$5 deposit, payable at the Reference Desk to hold your space
in the class. No-shows will forfeit their deposit.

Gardiner House Mysteries Revealed
Tuesday, March 17th, 3:30 - 5:00 PM
Tuesday, March 10th, 7 PM
You’ve driven by the house.
It’s possible that you have attended one of the many events
sponsored by the GreenlawnCenterport Historical Association.
But the century-old home on the
property at 900 Park Avenue and
the families that lived there are a
mystery to most of us. The mystery began in 1842 when Alexander
Smith and his wife were the victims of a grisly murder, and ends in 2003
when centenarian Herbert Gardiner passed away after spending 97 years
of his life in this family home. It was a home without electricity, modern
plumbing or other amenities that we take for granted. Hear first-hand
accounts of the Gardiner family history as told to one of the few people
who was befriended by this reclusive member of the community. Did his
simple lifestyle contribute to his longevity? Have the current caretakers seen the ghost that is reported to still live there? These and other
mysteries will all be revealed! Registration is not required.
Smartphones are changing the way we live. Now your cell
phone does more than just make calls - it’s a small, portable
computer. Applications (or apps) are what put the “smart” in
smartphones. Some apps provide information, some provide
utility, others provide entertainment. Join us for a demonstration of the best smartphone apps, most of which are free and
run on both the iPhone and Android smartphones.
