having a similar problem. Over the same 10-year period,
their membership has declined by 25.5 percent.

money to juvenile
racing.
Guess what? It's not true.
In 2014, 12.9 percent of all purse money paid out in
harness racing was earmarked for races restricted to
2-year-olds. And in thoroughbred racing? The number was
lower, at 11.2 percent. Despite what everyone seems to
think, the standardbred game actually allocates a larger
percentage of purse money for 2 year old races than the
runners do. (Stats provided by the USTA and The Jockey
Club)
Another fallacy is that the thoroughbred breeding market
is booming. From 2004 to 2014, the number of
thoroughbred foals born is this country is down by 41.7
percent, from 34,800 in 2014 to 20,300 in 2014. The
standarbred numbers are almost exactly the same. From
2004 to 2014 they have fallen by 42.4 percent. There were
10,740 U.S. standardbred foals born in 2004 and 6,181 in
2014.
Then what's the problem?
I believe it is the fact that overall interest in both sports
continues to decline. That this is happening in harness
racing is obvious. In 2004, there were 24,854 members in
the USTA. Today, there are 17,276, a decline of 30.5

Brothers, Joe Sbrocoo, Al Libfeld, Jimmy Takter and a few
others who will spend big money on yearlings. But there
aren't nearly enough of them. And the fact that so many big
owners team up and bid as a group on horses has depleted
the price of many a yearling. You rarely see the type of
bidding wars anymore that will send a price through the
roof.
Where is the new blood? The rich guy who rides in on a
white horse and throws around a couple million at
Harrisburg and Lexington and let's it be known that that
crafty Myron Bell doesn't intimidate him one bit? Sadly, the
answer is, there isn't one.
In the meantime, many of the sport's most prominent
owners are up in age and some are dying off. If they aren't

once as a 2-year-old, but roared back to post 17 wins and
six seconds in 27 starts as a 3-year. In the spring of 1987,
he paced in 1:51.4 at The Red Mile before he actually
attained his third birthday. He was campaigned by
horseman Larry Noggle.
He was in the same sophomore class of 1987 as Jate
Lobell, Jaguar Spur, Laag, Run The Table, Call For Rain,
and Redskin.
As a 4-year-old, Indian Alert traded wins with Call For
Rain and Jaguar Spur, and went off as the third choice at
6-1 in the Breeders Crown at Scioto, but faded to sixth after
coming first-over.
In his career, Indian Alert earned $810,040 in 80 starts,
an average of more than $10,000 per start despite not
being in many major stakes.
His sire Armbro Alert was a full brother to the celebrated
pacing mare Silk Stockings, but other than Indian Alert he
never sired a performer to earn more than $160,000.
Indian Alert was bred by Gaylord Hilander and was a prized
pensioner at the Hilander Farm in Georgetown, Kentucky.
Hilander raced Indian Alert in partnership with his daughter
Scarlett Lynn, also of Georgetown.
New Jersey Breeders Announce Rebate
Program for Pacing Stallions (news release)
MANALAPAN, NJ – April 13, 2015 – Rebates are not
only for new cars.
The Standardbred Breeders & Owners Association of
New Jersey, acting on a recommendation of its Breeders
Committee, has announced a rebate program of up to
$100,000 for 2015 breeding fees for pacing stallions
standing in the State of New Jersey.
The New Jersey Pacing Stallion Breeding Incentive offers
a rebate of the full advertised stallion fee [up to $2,500
maximum] for New Jersey resident mares and 50 percent of
the stallion fee [up to a $1,250 maximum] for non-resident
mares.
“Essentially, this will result in a heavily subsidized
breeding with the strong likelihood that when the resulting
foals reach the races, New Jersey will have a much
improved purse structure,” said Michael Gulotta, chairman
of the SBOANJ Breeders Committee. “With expectations
growing for a positive environment for racing in the next
couple of years, these foals could very well be highly
valuable assets.”
The rebate will coincide with the stud fee payment.
A requirement for participation includes the nomination of
the resulting foals as well as two-year-old sustaining
payments for the New Jersey Sire Stakes program. The
New Jersey Sire Stakes payments will be deducted from the
rebate. Additionally, to be eligible, stallions must be
enrolled in the USTA’s STARS program.
“We want to incentivize breeders who have not as yet
bred their broodmares this year to consider New Jersey’s

pacing stallions,” said SBOANJ President Tom Luchento.
“With the number of pacing mares booked so far in 2015,
we foresee a limited number of two-year-old pacers
competing in the New Jersey Sire Stakes in 2018. This is a
pilot program for 2015, but if it proves successful, our
Breeders Committee will review the possibility of renewing
it.”
Eligible stallions are Great Vintage and Hurrikane King
Cole, who are standing at Walnridge Farm; If I Can Dream
and Lis Mara, who are at Deo Volente Farm, and Philos
Hanover at Last Chance Farm.
Nuncio Will Kick off European Campaign
Wednesday
Nuncio will have his first start outside North America
Wednesday at Solvalla in Sweden. He will go in the ninth
race on the card, which will be worth $9,317 to the winner.
He will be driven by trainer Stefan Melander and drew
post nine. The field also includes Knows Northing, who won
14 of 35 starts in North America before being sold to
Finnish owners.
Nuncio’s biggest wins last year came in the Yonkers Trot
and the Kentucky Futurity.
Merriman Speaks Out Against Tougher
Whipping Rules in Ohio
Leading Ohio driver Aaron Merriman has called new
whipping rules in the state too restrictive and that they
almost completely take the whip away from a driver.
Merriman made his comments in a story run recently in
the Cleveland PlainDealer.
Renee Mancino, executive director of the Ohio Harness
Horsemen's Association, said the new rules are “being
upgraded to a level of absurdism."
The most significant change in the rules would require a
driver to have a line, or reins, in each hand for the entire
race.
Anndrovette Out of Matchmaker, Opts for
Preferred on Same Night
Though Dan Patch Award winner Anndrovette could have
made the finals of the Blue Chip Matchmaker, the Bamond
Stable decided to pull her out of the series, which continues
tonight. Instead she will go in the 7th race, a $31,000
Preferred event.
Bamond explained that Anndrovette came out of her start
two weeks ago in the Matchmaker sick and that forced her
to miss the next week. With the barn already having two
horses–Venus Delight and Krispy Apple–having clinched
spots in the finals, Bamond saw no need to press
Anndrovette into Matchmaker action.
With several horses having already clinched spots in the
finals, there will be only one Matchmaker division tonight.
The top three horses in the standings–Carolsideal, Venus
Delight and Yagonnakissmeornot, will sit this one out. Only
six are entered.
This will be the final leg of the series before next week’s
finals.
Race 7, F&M N/W $15,750 L5 Pace
THAT WOMAN HANOVER actually loomed for a little while
there last week at giant odds in just her first start back on
the year. Trainer Lundell was in the bike that night and it
looks like he may be aiming for a catch driver now; easily
has the class to beat these if primed. COFFEE ADDICT
has been overmatched of late in the Bluechip at Yonkers
but is no stranger to this track; 5-year-old season is off to a
disappointing start. CLORIS HANOVER fits with these on
paper and is a contender from the inside post; she's already
beaten similar here earlier in the season. PAN LUIS
OPISPO cruised last week when left alone on the front as
the favorite; there's some new faces in here now and it
won't be as easy. CHERRY BLISS drops from the Open
where was overmatched but is compromised by the outside
post; closed in :26:2 last out and still needs to prove she
can beat these types on the mile track.
Race 8, N/W $5,800 L5 Trot
HOME TURF was beat squarely on the money last week by
a sharp repeat winner with no excuse aside from the other
horse being faster. He’s still a recent acquisition to the
Burke stable and does have some talent; should be a major
player in here. MY MUSCLEMAN continues to drop down
the ladder and he was racing against far superior rivals the
last time he was seen here in March; will be better than
what those recent few lines show. KINGAPORE was a
sharp 1:54:4 winner here two back and then regressed into
a break last out; likely to be coming from far back but he
can out-trot most of these late. LEXIS AMIGO seems to
have tailed off and would now need to put it all back
together. CAMBRIDGE and HELIOS were handicapped the
outside two posts although they don’t strike me as better
than anyone else.
Race 9, N/W $7,500 L5 Trot
POUNCE HANOVER is an unbeaten 2 for 2 since the
McDermott claim and now he’s bumped up another notch to
$25K. Those last two wins on the front end have been real
sharp and I won’t be swayed off him despite a few in here
that are dropping. STITCH IN TIME is another that’s aiming
for three wins in a row and that win from two back came in
1:53:1; no question that trainer Todd Buter has him coming
back around. LAUDERDALE worked himself too high up on
the ladder but that’s no problem; he now drops to the level
that he’s best at for a top trotting barn. LOOKING
HANOVER is a play-against in my opinion despite landing
the rail; 10-year-old can beat me if he can. SCORCHER
HALL may take some action and at least he stayed flat in
his most recent. CLEMENTINE DREAM drops but gets the
worst of it at the post draw and the lone mare in here would
need her A-1 best.

Race 10, N/W 3 Trot
WICKER HANOVER faced some good ones last year as a
freshman and was never really disgraced. Daley trainee
closed out the year by only finishing a couple lengths
behind French Laundry at Vernon and that return qualifier
looks solid; he can win at first asking. That last win from
FERRAGAMO was dominant but it took him a while to
break through in that N/W 2 level and now gets the worst
post while stepping up. STEEL CURTIN found early speed
last out on the move to Callahan and was active
throughout; blasts again and forces the hand of #10 early.
MISS B’VILLE J was with Brainard last year and now
debuts for Toscano; that qualifier at Philly was decent
although the young filly may need a race. ANNAPOLIS
won here last year in 1:55 and isn’t much worse than many
of these.
