Just Call Him P H Super Unlucky
By Bill Finley
P H Supercam has clearly been the best horse among
the many who have gone in the preliminary legs of the
Levy series, but the final is always a race where luck is
more important than talent. After going 4 for 4 in the
prelims, the unlucky 8-year-old gelding drew post eighth for
tonight's $529,000 Levy final at Yonkers. To make matters
worse, his stablemate from the Bamond barn, Mach It So,
drew post seven.
"W hat are the
odds of drawing the
seven and eighth?
Pretty remote,"
said owner Jeff
Bamond Sr.
P H Supercam
won the Levy final
last year from post
six, but that's a lot
Can P H Supercam overcome the
easier spot to start
dreaded eight post at Yonkers in the
from at Yonkers
Levy final?
than the eight post.
The eight post is winning at the current meet at a rate of
just 4.6 percent.
The draw was the first dose of bad news for the veteran
pacer since the series began. He has won all four of his
starts in the series, while skipping one leg. The worst he
had drawn prior to this was the five post. He also benefitted
from a rare weak showing from the Ron Burke barn, whose
big gun Foiled Again did not make the final.
"It's going to be tough for us," Bamond Sr. said. "If P H
Supercam does it he's really going have to earn it. It will all
come down to the trip. Jason (Bartlett) is going to do what
he's going to do. There will be no instructions from us
other than do whatever you think you have to do. I do know
he can't win from last."
Bamond would like to see Yonkers adopt a system that
rewards those who do well in the prelims when it comes to
draw time.
"Maybe the points winners should be in a draw for posts
one through four, which would make it more fair," he said.
"Is it disappointing? Yes, it's very disappointing to have a
horse you think is the sharpest horse in the series and you
draw the eighth with him and the seven with our other
horse."
The way the draw unfolded will definitely create a more
interesting betting race as it looks like five or six horses
have legitimate shots. That list includes Beach Memories,
who has been in the Scott Di Domenico barn for only a few
weeks. Because no trainer is allowed to have more than
two horses in the finals trainer Ron Burke shifted horses
around and advised the owners of Beach Memories to turn
the gelding over to Di Domenico. Ironically, Burke has only
one horse in the final, Take It Back Terry.
Beach Memories won his first two starts in the series
before finishing second for Di Domenico and then fifth. The
trainer said the horse was "a little sick last week."
Should Beach Memories win this would be the biggest
win, purse-wise, of Di Domenico's career. He drew post
four and has picked up the services of Yannick Gingras as
previous driver Daniel Dube will go with Domethatagain.
"W hen I saw the draw I was tickled. I was ecstatic, "Di
Domenico said. "Yannick is in a spot where he could go
either way with him. W e're in a good spot. I think he's as
good as anyone in there. Seeing P H Supercam draw the
eighth and Take Back Terry draw outside of us (in the five
hole) gives Yannick a clear shot to go whichever way he
thinks is best. To win this race, especially after the way this
horse came into my barn, would be awesome."
From post five and with George Brennan in the bike,
Take It Back Terry could go off as the favorite. He's won
three in a row in the series. The field also includes Polak
A., who got off to a roaring start with two straight Levy wins

after arriving
from Australia. But he's cooled off since, finishing seventh
and third in his last two starts.
The night's festivities at Yonkers will also include the
$261,000 Blue Chip Matchmaker for pacing mares. Trained
by Rene Allard, Carolsideal has won all four of her starts
thus far in the series and drew well getting the four post,
The main threat may be Venus Delight, who drew the one
for the Bamond team and won in her last Matchmaker try.

Shake It Cerry Off Board in 4-YO Debut
The 2014 Trotter of the Year Shake It Cerry finished
fourth in her first start of 2015, the $51,100 Meadows
Maturity at the Meadows. The race was won by Daylon
Miracle and Cowgirl Hall was second.
Everything seemed to be going fine for Shake It Cerry
and driver Dave Palone for most of the race. Palone sent
the classy mare right to the front and seemed to be going
easily through splits of 27.1, 56.1 and 1:24.3.
Driven by Aaron Merriman, Daylon Miracle was second
for most of the trip before making her move in the stretch in
the passing
lane. She shot
past Shake It
Cerry easily,
and Shake It
Cerry also could

settling for fourth.
“It’s great to beat some of the top mares in the country
and do it on your own turf,” Merriman said.
The winning trainer was Bill Bercury.
Shake It Cerry came into the race with a lifetime record of
23 for 28 and had finished out of the money only twice prior
in her career.

With Allard Remaining as the Trainer, Big Boy
Dreams Will be Banned from Graduate Series
By Bill Finley
The ownership group of 4-year-old pacer Big Boy
Dreams has left the horse with trainer Rene Allard, which
means the horse will not be allowed to participate in the
upcoming Graduate Series. The series takes place at Jeff
Gural-owned tracks and begins May 25 at Tioga Downs.
This year Gural instituted a rule that banned any horse in
any race that is trained by someone excluded at his tracks.
Allard is barred at the Gural tracks, and the current rules
say that in order for a horse to participate it most be moved
to the stable of an approved trainer within 30 days of racing
at the Meadowlands, Vernon or Tioga.
Gural has banned many trainers, but up until this year he
has allowed their horses to compete in races that required
payments in order to be eligible. The Big Boy Dreams team
has paid $5,000 for their horse to be able to race in the
Graduate.
Big Boy Dreams is entered in tomorrow night’s first race
at Pocono with Allard down to train. Because the owners
did not move the horse to another barn in time, the
Graduate is out and they will have to forfeit the $5,000.
The matter appears to be complicated by the fact that
Allard is a 25 percent owner of the horse. Robert Hamather
is the majority owner with a 50 percent share in the horse.
“I talked to Robert Hamather three different times and he
clearly knows what the rule is,” Meadowlands racing
secretary Pete Koch said. “He knows there had to be a
change within 30 days
of the series. It looks
to me like Rene does
not want to sell his
portion of the horse.
That’s a problem.”
W hen reached
earlier in the day by
HRU, Hamather said
he wanted to speak
with Koch again
Big Boy Dreams will be barred
before making any
from the Graduate Series
comments and said he
planned to call him Friday night. As of late last night, Koch
said he had not heard from the owner. Hamather did tell
HRU that he will consider suing the Meadowlands if his
horse is not allowed to race in the Graduate.
Big Boy Dreams will enter the Pocono race at 0 for 2 on
the year, but was a top 3-year-old last year when trained by
Ron Burke. He earned $290,094 and won the W indy City
Pace and the Matron.

Pena Looking at Long Suspension Monday, but
His Lawyer Vows to Keep Fighting
By Bill Finley
In a battle that has been on-going since May, 2012, Lou
Pena is expected to
finally hear what his
penalty will be from the
New York Gaming
Commission for an
alleged 1,700-plus drug
violations. Considering
the mammoth number of
Monday could be a rough day violations, Pena is
expected to be hit with a
for Lou Pena
lengthy suspension and a
hefty fine at a hearing of the Gaming Commission on
Monday in Brooklyn.
However, as has been the case with this matter from Day
One, nothing is simple and no matter what decision the
Gaming Board arrives at Pena's legal team has vowed to
fight on. It will likely take the matter back to the court
systems and file appeals that will delay any final and
absolute verdict on the controversial trainer.
Though none of the horses involved in the case tested
positive for any prohibited drugs, the then New York State
Racing and W agering Board used veterinary records to
allege that Pena illegally drugged horses on 1,719
(continued on next page)

occasions. Yet, after Pena had his hearing before the
Racing Board time seemed to stand still as the hearing
officer left the agency and a ruling on Pena's case still had
not been made nearly six months later.
At that time, Pena's attorney Andrew Turro, a partner in
the firm Meyer, Suozzi, English & Klein, successfully
argued in the courts that Pena's due process rights had
been violated because the Commission had failed to
render a verdict in a timely manner. The Gaming Board
appealed that ruling and won as an appellate court ruled
that the delay should not prevent the Board from being able
to penalize Pena. W ith that ruling now in the books, the
Gaming Board can finally go ahead and issue whatever
penalties it decides are appropriate in the Pena matter.
Turro, expecting that Pena will be suspended Monday
has already set the wheels in motion to file further court
appeals and has gotten the Gaming Board to agree to put
Pena's suspension on hold for as long as 25 days.
Looking ahead, Turro is optimistic Pena will eventually be
vindicated in the courts as he will continue to argue that his
clients rights were violated because the Gaming
Commission took so long to get its business in order.
"The key argument here, in my mind, and this goes all
the way back to the seventies in the Supreme Court case
Barry v. Barchi, is that the Supreme Court has determined
that a license is protected by due process clauses," Turro
said. "W hen somebody takes that license away without a
hearing they have to provide the licensee not only with a
prompt hearing but a prompt determination. That really
calls into the question what the Supreme Court has said,
that someone is entitled to a prompt hearing and a prompt
determination. I think it's very problematic what happened
here and if the courts were to rule against us I think it
would create a troubling precedent."
Rekila Makes Debut as Thoroughbred Trainer
Harness trainer Riina Rekila will make her debut as a
thoroughbred trainer today at
W oodbine when she sends out
a 3-year-old maiden filly named
Cat Avenue in the second race.
“I really like the
thoroughbreds but this is just a
hobby for me,” said Rekila, who
added she has no plans to cut
back on her standardbred
operation.
Riina Rekila is branching
Rekila’s best standardbred is
out into thoroughbreds
E L Titan, who beat Father
Patrick in last year’s Carl Erskine at Hoosier. Ron Pierce
drove E L Titan that day, but Rekila often drives her own
horses.
“I train the thoroughbreds and I breeze them, but I can’t
ride them in the races as I am too big,” she said.
She said she has three thoroughbreds in her small stable
of runners.
Maven Squares Off Against Nine Others in
Sweden’s Olympic Trot
Looking for her biggest payday thus far in 2015, the
Jimmy Takter-trained Maven will meet nine others in
today’s Olympic Trot at Aby in Sweden. The race is worth
$198,085 to the winner. Takter’s brother Johnny will drive.
The bad news is that the Glidemaster mare drew post 10.
By Kadabra, Support Justice has won 22 of 29 lifetime
starts and is 3 for 3 this year and looms as the horse to
beat.
The distance of the race is 1.3 miles.
Mac Nichol’s Madefromlucky Won’t Star in
Kentucky Derby
Co-owned by prominent standardbred owner, the
thoroughbred Madefromlucky has been withdrawn from
consideration for the Kentucky Derby. Trainer Todd
Pletcher made the announcement yesterday ater
Madefromlucky was outworked by stablemate Stanford.

Open Mares Deliver a Thriller at The
Meadowlands
By Darin Zoccali
EAST RUTHERFORD, NJ (April 24, 2015) – For the
past two weeks, Inittowinafortune has chased Radar
Contact from the pocket and each time she came up short.
That changed Friday night at The Meadowlands as the five
year old mare earned a hard-fought victory by a flared
nostril in the featured $27,500 Fillies and Mares Open
Handicap.
Inittowinafortune was released as the 4-1 third choice
behind Radar Contact (3/5) and Rocklamation (2-1).
Radar Contact was sent immediately to the lead from her
assigned outside post and she would remain on the point
through strong fractions of 26.2, 54 and 1:22.1 before
turning for home with Inittowinafortune right on her tail. As
the open mares straighted away, Corey Callahan guided
Inittowinafortune to the outside and mounted their bid for
the lead. Callahan’s mare put a head in front in
mid-stretch, but Radar Contact dug back in and the two
talented mares paced all the way to the wire together.
Only a nose separated the pair, with Inittowinafortune
earning a well-deserved victory over Radar Contact.
Rocklamation was three lengths back in third in the 1:50.2
mile.
Inittowinafortune is trained by Michael Russo for owner
Michael Pagonas.
W hom Shall I Fear was the easiest of winners again
Friday night at The Meadowlands, as he coasted to a
dominant wire to wire performance in his division of the
Spring Preview for the three year old trotters. It appeared
as though the $475,000 yearling never took a deep breadth
as he coasted to a 1:54.4 triumph. The brother of Father
Patrick, controlled the tempo through fractions of 28.4, 58
and 1:26.2 while never facing a challenge. W hom Shall I
Fear is trained by Jimmy Takter for the W hom Shall I Fear
Stable.
For the second consecutive week, social media went
abuzz as W hom Shall I Fear crossed the finish line Friday
night. Many were asking the question as to if this is the
three year old colt to watch leading up to The
Hambletonian and if this is the horse that can push Mission
Brief?
The most interesting aspect of that question is that
Yannick Gingras drives both horses.
Muscle Network, the 2013 Valley Victory made his four
year old debut a winning one, by taking a condition trotting
event in 1:54.3. The Tony O’Sullivan trainee was last early
in the mile and was allowed to find his stride through
fractions of 28 and 56.4 before being guided to the outside
by Dave Miller. Muscle Network found a live outer flow
where he positioned himself third over and followed live
cover past three-quarters in 1:25 where he set up his late
rally as the field turned for home. From there, the classy
four year old closed in on Quick Deal and reeled him in just
before the wire to earn the comeback victory.
Muscle Network is staked well, including the TVG
Trotting Championship, and the upcoming Graduate series
which begins one month from now at Tioga Downs. He is
owned by Frank Bellino & Sons L.L.C.
Stacia Hanover also returned a winner in a condition
event for filly and mare pacers. The 2014 New Jersey Sire
Stakes champion was relegated to last early in the mile
through rather tepid fractions of 28.2 and 57.1. Shortly past
the half-mile pole, Stacia Hanover was guided outside and
tracked live cover from a third over position where she
would remain past three quarters in 1:26.1. From there,
Scott Zeron would show his filly racetrack and she
responded rallying home well to score in 1:55 over an
equally fast-closing Strut My Stuff. American Truth saw her
three race win streak come to an end, cutting the mile and
finishing third.
Stacia Hanover is trained by Steve Elliot for David Van
Dusen and Michael Cimaglio.
In amateur racing news, Hannah Miller continues to ride
her amazing hot streak.
Miller won the first race on the evening, the
French-American Friendship Amateur event with Jacks To
Open. Her record this season now stands at 6 wins from
21 starts with 12 of those 21 races resulting in an
in-the-money finish. For her career, Miller has won 15 of
41 starts. The other amateur event went to Mr Ridgetaker
and Alan Charles who took the field wire to wire.
Both Jackpot Super Hi-5 wagers saw their carryovers

continue. The 5th race carryover has grown to $91,918,
while the last race carryover now stands at $62,450.
Total handle for the 13-race program of $2,649,116 was
an eight-percent (8%) increase over the same Friday one
year ago.
Racing resumes on Saturday, featuring the second round
of the W hata Baron series, with first post time at 7:15 P.M.
Race 7, N/W $15,500 L5 Pace
ONTARIO SUCCESS has been close in his last couple but
hasn’t been able to break through despite a couple of 1:49
miles in a row. O’Sullivan trainee is a tough knocking foe;
an obvious short priced contender in here. ODDS ON
EQUULEUS couldn’t deliver last week at sixty cents on the
dollar following a tripped out win two back; he’s another
that can beat these on any given night and it looks like the
main threats to win are coming from the outside. SPEED
AGAIN drops for Burke and is looking to get back on track
this year; was very good when he came to this barn last
year. W INDSONG GORGEOUS continues to race well but
these foes are generally worth much more than his $35K
claiming tag. ONE STOP DEAL and MISTER TRUTH
bring Delaware drivers with them.
Race 8, N/W 4 Pace
APOLLO SEELSTER has looked like a monster since
coming down from Canada and into the Dylan Davis stable.
This one is unbeaten in that barn and beat overmatched
rivals in his most recent at Dover with a :26:3 last quarter; it
looks like the road in here goes through him.
IDEALBEACH HANOVER was second last out to the
classy Dapper Dude and now finds himself in a 4-year-old
restricted race; well spotted for Ford. SW EET BEACH
crushed a field last week that he couldn’t lose to and now
faces tougher; that was certainly a race to build on
however and more could be coming now. ART HISTORY
probably should have won last week as the big fave but it
still took a big mile to beat him.
Race 9, N/W $11,000 L5 Pace
MISTER VIRGIN was claimed last out and is looking like a
bargain when we consider that he’s been in against the
likes of Dapper Dude and Odds On Equuleus in his last
pair. His win three back at this level was exceptional and
this barn has been sneaky good here with horses when
they figure. ROCK STAR had to go first over last week
through middle fractions of :54 and 1:21; sharp enough
right now to handle the step up and will offer a square
price. BREAKIN THE LAW has been consistent over the
past month and we can toss his try from last week since he
now gets McCarthy back. JOURNEYMAN is an obvious
short priced contender from the rail for Burke; gutted out a
1:51 win against similar earlier in the year. DIAMOND
SAID has been a hot commodity at the claiming box of late
and now goes for the best barn of the meet; this is an
awfully big step up though.
Race 10, N/W $5,000 L5 Pace
RELENTLESS DREAMER airborne two back and then was
given a less than eventful drive last week in a no-shot try;
he can go by these late in his second start for the new
barn. BIG JER ran into some trouble early last out and
he’s another that didn’t get a chance to show his best; this
is a dangerous level for him when right. STORMIN
RUSTLER was used hard throughout in his most recent
and still almost lasted; you can’t fault the 11-year-old’s form
in his last two. VIP BAYAMA was a 1:54 winner at
Freehold and that kind of mile rates very favorably in this
spot; gets Zeron now too. YOU BET YOUR GLASS has
been in against sharp foes of late and now drops.
