METHOD AND ORDER OF SALE: All lots will be sold in guineas (105 pence) and in catalogue
order, unless any alteration is authorised and announced by the Auctioneers. Buyers must have
a bidders number.

CONDITIONS OF SALE: The Nortumbrian Alpaca herd will be sold under Dispersal Sale rules,
which means that no warranty is implied or given. The remaining consignments will be sold
subject to the Auctioneer’s General terms and Conditions of Sale (printed in this catalogue).
WARRANTIES: The pedigree and description of each lot is believed to be correct. Any update
information of any lots will be displayed or announced on sale day. The auctioneers and vendors
accept no liability for any damage, injury or loss to persons, animals or property whilst attending
the sale.

PAYMENT AND STOCK CLEARANCE: Full payment of stock to be made either by banker’s draft,
certified cheque or debit card and clearance can only by affected after confirmation of payment.
No animal may leave from the Sale Premises without an official PASS obtainable only from the
Auctioneers upon settlement. All lots must be removed from Sale Premises on the day of sale.
INSURANCE: Facilities will be available from Armitage Livestock Insurance Agency (01932
856486) for buyers to insure their animals, for transit and other risks from the fall of the hammer.

The Alpacas






Alpacas are naturally herd animals and only really feel safe with their own kind; they
must not be kept singly.
Generally they are hardy healthy animals and, as with all livestock, they should be
checked at least once a day, preferably twice.
By spending time with your animals you will get to know them and it is easier to tell
when they are ‘out of sorts’. The earlier problems are detected and help
administered, the greater the chance of a speedy recovery.
Alpacas usually give little indication that they are feeling unwell until they are very
sick. Early indications may include loss of appetite, spending more time lying around
and not keeping up with the herd. Other symptoms may include abnormal breathing
and/or posture, lameness, discharge from the eyes or nose, and just generally
looking depressed.
If there is ever any doubt pertaining to the health and welfare of your animals,
veterinary assistance should always be sought.

Never be afraid to ask if you have any problems. You could learn something new
each day about alpacas and they would still appear to have an air of mystery about
them.
If you experience any problems with newly purchased alpacas your first point of call
should be with the person you brought them from.
Don't be afraid to question your vet and provide him with all the information you can.
For example, mention the weight of a fully fleeced animal before he approaches with
the hypodermic. There are many conflicting views and opinions regarding all aspects
of these creatures.
If selling animals, make sure clients know and understand the minimum requirements
involved in looking after alpacas.
If possible, visit the new homes and ensure paddocks and field shelters are of an
adequate size and that the animals will be safe and looked after.

Feeding







Different groups of animals will have different nutritional requirements.
Always ensure that there is enough grazing. If there is not, and especially in winter
months, the animals should be offered hay or haylage.
There must be a constant supply of fresh, clean drinking water.
Heavily pregnant and lactating females and other animals also require a supplement
concentrate feed during the winter months. When feeding concentrate, ensure that
the food is suitable and offered in the correct quantities to meet your animals’
nutritional requirements.
Feeding of sugar beet in the winter is a good source of energy.
Don't use haynets because animals could get their heads caught and hang.
Be aware that a number of plants are poisonous to alpacas and steps should be
taken to ensure that they are removed from paddocks.

Transport








Alpacas can be transported in a horsebox, livestock trailer, or any other approved
vehicle for the transportation of livestock, providing there is enough room for the
animal to stand.
Animals should not be tied to the trailer in any way, because they will usually sit in
transit.
Flooring to the trailer should be capable of being disinfected - ideally rubber to
provide the animals with some form of grip.
Adult males and females should travel separately and can be divided by a solid
partition.
Travelling time must be monitored. Animals may only be in transit for nine hours out
of each 24.
Stops should be made to provide the animals with clean drinking water and food.
This especially applies to females with young cria at foot and allows the cria time to
suckle. Animals must also have the opportunity to stand and defecate.
It is advisable in case of accident or emergency to carry with you sufficient head
collars and lead ropes for each animal being transported.
Seek veterinary advice when transporting heavily pregnant females. Judgements
should take into account travelling time and distance.

DISPERSAL SALE OF NORTHUMBRIAN ALPACAS

The story of Northumbrian Alpacas
Northumbrian Alpacas began after Jonathan and I had seen Alpacas at the Northumberland
County Show and fallen for their charms. We were also attracted to breeding animals that
were valued for their fleece rather than their meat, and haunted by the history of Alpacas
in South America.
From the start, our aim was to produce top quality white Alpacas, and following extensive
research by Jonathan we started as new entrants to the world of Alpaca breeding in 2007.
We visited Bozedown and, with their help, selected our foundation females from their
Dream Selection Peruvian imports, later adding more of their best girls to our herd,
including Zenia, Maleah, Lakma, Caitlynn, lovely Jackeline and amazing Grace.
Through our selection we were able to secure not only fantastic females but also, through
their pregnancies and resultant cria, the genetics of Bozedown greats: Ulysses, Viscount,
Celebrity and the renowned Galaxy. This was the basis for our herd.
Our next aim was to strengthen and diversify that mix with genetics from the best
bloodlines available in the UK, and accordingly we bought in our stud services from very
special males: Shanbrooke Accoyo Shere Impact of Kilnwood, Accoyo-Europe Sir Perceval,
Silverstream Czar of Anzac, and most significantly, EPC Top Account of Fowberry.
Additionally we had always aimed to farm organically, and are proud to have been certified
by Organic Farmers & Growers and to have been, as far as we know, the only organic
Alpaca breeders running a commercially-sized herd in the UK.
The results speak for themselves. In four years we bred three Supreme Champions, and
through careful mating decisions we have achieved our aim of blending the top-quality
genetics in our herd to produce not only repeated generations of top quality breeding
stock but our own successful, award-winning and highly valued stud males – Flamebearer,
Alric, Uchtred the Bold, Ossa, King Theodric, King Eoppa and, at auction today, King Edwin
and our three 'main men: Ida, Osric and Pybba. (See 'What's in a name?' for further details
about how we christened our crias!)
The next generation will see further diversification with the introduction of the services of
Syke House Antiodona, bringing the famous genetics of Rural Alianza Don Pepe of Wessex
into the mix, and also at auction today.
But that next chapter is for another generation of breeders and Alpaca lovers. Whatever
you do, enjoy and cherish these extraordinary animals, their heritage and their individuality.

This herd has been well cared for and disease has been monitored very closely at all times. Preventative medicine and vaccination strategies have been employed along with an anthelmintic plan to ensure the highest possible health status has been achieved. What's in a name?
The origins of Northumbrian
Alpacas
Northumbrian Alpacas was born in the North Tyne Valley
at Ridge End Farm – a traditional bastle (fortified
farmhouse) dating back to 1590.
From the start we were keen to celebrate, through our
alpacas, the uniting of fantastic genetics from across the
world (Commisario, Conquistador, Don Pepe, Fibre’s
Brutus, Hemingway, Sculptor and Shere Khan),
alongside great UK stud names such as Czar, Galaxy,
Shere Impact, Sir Perceval and the great Top
Account,
But we wanted also to celebrate, in the names of our
animals, the heritage of Northumbria (originally the kingdoms of Beornica/Bernicia
and Deira) – royalty, religion, and reiving!

Osric’s dam Sophia was imported from Peru by Bozedown Alpacas for her fine, dense, soft-handling
fleece and strong frame. Osric has inherited these, and both fleece characteristics and good fertility
from his sire, the legendary Galaxy of Bozedown.
Shown four times as a Junior all over the UK, and placed each time against national competition.
Judges at all of the shows were impressed by the fineness, brightness, density and uniformity of
Osric’s superbly organised fleece.

Proud son of Jackeline of Bozedown (fantastic compact, well formed female with a prizewinning
fleece) and Top Account.
Ida’s fleece is incredibly bright, extremely fine, measurably dense, well-organised and grows
exceptionally long staples.
Assessed by Dr Jim Watts of SRS in 2012, Northumbrian Ida had an extremely high number of
follicles per square millimetre (67.9*) and an amazingly low mean fibre diameter of 17.5 microns,
lower than any of the other males skin-tested by Dr Watts and listed on his website. Additionally Ida
had managed to grow 0.49786 millimetres of fibre every day since he was last shorn – again, better
than any of the other males skin-tested. Lastly, the occurrence of medullation within Ida’s primary
fibres was the lowest, and within his secondary fibres there was no medullation at all!
The fineness and length of Ida’s fleece meant that it was past its best by the show season, but he is
halter-trained and on his one outing he was placed first in the Intermediate White Male class. Five of
his 2014 cria are in the auction.

Northumbrian Pybba is a solid white proven stud male, out of Grace of Bozedown, sired by EPC Top
Account of Fowberry.
Pybba’s breeding is impeccable. His dam was imported from Peru by Bozedown Alpacas, who chose
her for her fine, dense and uniform fleece, and for her well-sized and strong frame. Grace is now 13
years of age, and has produced a cria every year since she was imported in 2006. Grace has never
been shown in a halter show but her fleece has won rosettes in competition with stud males several
years her junior.
Pybba has inherited Grace’s strong frame, which is fit for purpose and carries a generous weight of
fleece.
The illustrious career and amazing statistics of Pybba’s sire, Top Account, will be known by any
breeder. Pybba combines top breeding from Australia with untold generations of fine breeding, and
in this instance, out-crossing vigour, from Peru. Like that of his sire, Pybba’s fleece is fine and has a
very soft handle; it is extremely dense, well organised and exhibits enviable brightness.
Pybba’s show record is outstanding. As a junior on the halter he brought home blue ribbons (against
national competition) from as far afield as Kenilworth and the Three Counties, but once his fleece
was off there was no stopping him: he won Supreme Champion at the Border Union Show and his
fleece won Reserve Champion at the Scottish National Fleece Show. He again won his class
(Intermediate) at the Border Union Show the following year, but suffered the ignominy of being
beaten by our very own Queen Bebba who won Supreme that year.
Pybba retired from the show circuit and started work as a stud male in 2011, successful from the first
attempt; in 2012 his progeny won him 2nd prize at Northumberland County Show – the consolation
was that he was beaten by his own sire, Top Account! Ten of his offspring are in the auction.

NOTICE TO ALL VISITORS AND TRADERS
PLEASE READ AND OBSERVE
THE FOLLOWING
AUCTIONEER’S TERMS & CONDITIONS OF SALE
(Incorporating the Auctioneer’s
Terms and Conditions )
1.
The biddings to be regulated by the Auctioneers and the
highest bidder, subject to the Vendor’s reserve (if any), to be
the purchaser. No bid shall be retracted and if any dispute
should arise between two or more bidders, the Lot in dispute
to be put up again and resold, or the Auctioneers may determine the dispute at their own discretion and their decision
shall be final. The Auctioneers reserve the right to refuse the
bid of any person without being called upon to give reason
for such action.
2.
The Purchaser to give his full name and dwelling place and
pay for all Lots purchased immediately at the close of sale.
No Lot or Lots shall be removed from the sale premises until
paid for and a pass-out slip obtained from the Auctioneer’s
clerk but each and every Lot shall immediately at the fall of
the hammer be considered as delivered and be and remain in
every respect at the absolute risk and expense of the respective purchaser or purchasers thereof and shall be removed
from the sale premises at the purchaser’s expense. The right
of property shall not pass until the full purchase price is paid.
3.
Purchasers paying by cheque must be prepared, if required,
to produce a banker’s reference. As a result of the Money
Laundering Regulations (2003) the auctioneers are unable
to accept cash payments in excess of nine thousand pounds
sterling for any any single or linked purchase transaction.
4.
All statements in the catalogue, or made by the Auctioneers
at the time of sale, also the correct identification of the animals, are the entire responsibility of the Vendors. The Auctioneers take no personal responsibility for the correctness of
such statements or identities.
5.
All statements in the catalogue, or any made by the Auctioneers at the time of sale relating to any veterinary or other tests
are to be taken as statements of fact only. No such statements shall guarantee the purchaser of any animal against
loss arising from the subsequent reaction of such animal to
any test administered after the sale and the Vendors shall not
be liable in any way should this occur.
6.
All stock is sold subject to the Conditions of Sale recommended for use at markets by the Livestock Auctioneers’
Markets Committee for England and Wales except in so far
as these conflict with any Special Conditions applicable to
the sale of pedigree stock, when the latter Conditions shall
prevail.
7.
Neither the Vendors nor the Auctioneers will be responsible
for any accident or injury to persons or property, through fire
or any other cause whatsoever, nor for any damage by animals prior to, during or after the sale.
8.
No undertaking by the Auctioneers or their servants to take
charge of any Lot or Lots after the sale or to forward them to
their destination shall be held to impose upon the Auctioneers any legal obligation or vitiate any of these Conditions.
9.
Inasmuch as the Auctioneers act as agents for a disclosed
principal they shall not be considered personally responsible
for any default on the part of either purchasers or Vendors
and the remedy shall be against them only and not against
the Auctioneers.
Passageways must be kept clear at all times during the
auction sale. PLEASE DO NOT STAND IN THE SALE RING
ENTRANCE AND EXIT PASSAGES.
10.
If these conditions are unfulfilled, the Vendors or Auctioneers shall have the power to resell the Lots, retaining any
surplus and charging any deficiency and expense to the
defaulter.
The auction ring man escapes and refuges must be kept
clear at all times.
11.
You have a right to know how we will use the information you have provided to us. We may share the information with other members of our group and may make this
information available to relevant media groups and other
interested parties on request. We and other members of
the group may contact you by telephone, e-mail, post or
fax to inform you of products or services available. If you
do not want to be contacted for marketing purposes or
do not wish your information to be made available to any
other parties please notify us in writing.
All visitors and traders on site will be responsible for ensuring that they and their employees or sub-contractors
engaged by them comply with all legal requirements, including the Health and Safety At Work etc., Act 1974, The
Management of Health and Safety At Work Regulations,
The Provision And Use of Work Equipment Regulations, etc.
All visitors and traders will be responsible for ensuring that
their operations in no way affect the integrity of the company or its fire, safety or security arrangements and in no
way compromise the health and safety and welfare of other
visitors to and or employees of Harrison & Hetherington.
Although it is the visitors and traders responsibility to ensure that plant, equipment and systems in work are safe,
Harrison & Hetherington Limited reserve the right to ask
any visitor or trader to leave the market for any breaches in
the Health and Safety Rules and/or Regulations.
Vendors must inform Harrison & Hetherington Limited of
any livestock due to attend the market whose temperament, behaviour or condition may call for additional precautions for its safe handling.
When loading or unloading livestock handlers must ensure
that the dock and vehicle gates are securely fixed so as to
prevent the escape of animals.
Traders are responsible for providing and maintaining suitable livestock handling equipment. They should ensure that
livestock handlers are fit, experienced in livestock handling
and familiar with the livestock in their charge.
Children must not be permitted in any area where they may
be at risk from livestock or machinery.
In the case of bulls, during the period when the show/sale
is open to visitors, bulls in stalls or pens should not be left
unattended. If the handler is temporarily absent, arrangements should be made with another vendor, steward or
member of Harrison & Hetherington staff to oversee the
bull until the handler returns.
Handling of Livestock at shows and sales: Harrison & Hetherington Limited recommend that an adult person should
accompany any junior person during the showing/sale of
livestock in the ring and reserves the right to intervene at
any point if, in the company’s opinion, the person showing
the livestock is at risk in undertaking that activity.
All portable electrical equipment supplied and/or used by
visitors and traders must be safe and fit for the purpose and
should have a valid portable appliance test certificate.
