Off to the Races …Scribbles from your President…
Election Season for the HTC is here. The climax is in August at our Annual Meeting, but May is the time for
candidacy and other campaign announcements. Toss your hat in the ring – there is no campaign financing to
worry about.
Run on our teams at the Delaney Dash 4 Mile on the 23rd. Like last year there are shuttle buses for parking, which
is 1.3 miles from the race at First Church of Christ, 366 Main Street, Saybrook. June 13th the team race is Manchester’s downhill
Spring Street Mile.
May has a plethora of races, and at least one of them has a significant change. For over two decades Breast Cancer Day at New
Britain’s Walnut Hill Park has seen a women’s 5K and a men’s 5K. This year there will be one 5K with both genders, as well as
the Kids Challenge and two walks.
In June we help the Celebrate! West Hartford 5K on the 7th and produce the HTC Solstice Sprint 5K on the 17th. It is our tenth
Solstice and also the RRCA CT 5K championship. Outdoor track and field USATF/CT meets are in Bethel on June 6th (all ages)
and Junior Olympics June 27th in Litchfield (born 1997 or later).

Group Runs
In an effort to promote running for our members the Hartford Track Club lists as well as organizes weekly group runs. If you would
like to add a group run please e-mail Peter Hawley at [email protected]. The runs should be open to runners of all abilities.
New Hartford area:
Looking to start new weekly group run in the New Hartford area. Saturday and Sunday mornings, meet at the base of Ratlum Road at
the parking lot directly across from reservoir . Between 4-10 miles for all abilities. If interested contact:

New group run for Cromwell Rocky Hill area:
Looking to start new weekly group run for the Cromwell/Rocky Hill area. Would like to start a group run on Friday (5:30 am) and
Sunday (7:30am) – goal is anywhere from 4 to 6 miles to meet at Cromwell High School to run between 4 to 6 miles for runners of all

Tuesday Night Granby Group Run 5:30: We will continue to meet in Granby/Simsbury every Tuesday through the winter. If

Wednesday Night HTC Group Runs Going Strong in Wallingford
Greetings - The Walleyworld chapter of the Hartford Track Club is alive and well!
Every Wednesday night at 6 p.m., Rob Najarian (the Godfather of Sole and HTC Emeritus) harkens an intrepid band of runners to
commence running. The chapel bell tolls in sync with the Godfather's atomic watch and the group begins their weekly constitution
run starting on the bucolic campus of Choate Rosemary Hall in Wallingford. The distance and pace vary with usually about three sub
groups forming and running a distance from 5-9 miles at a pace between 7-10 minutes/mile. The course is a combination of wooded xcountry trails and paved roadways.
A varied cast of characters are likely to show up on any given Wednesday, but most likely to appear amongst the HTC faithful include:
Kathy Bazinet, Sri Bodkhe, Lee Bradley, Todd Brown, Tricia Dowcett, Kim Ferraiolo, John Hogan, Pete Hornak, Anne Manning,
Kevin Markowski, Bob Najarian, Fran O’Donoghue, Eric Pope, Larry Regan, Brent Stratton, Karen Thimble, and Craig Zettergren,
On the first Wednesday of each month, the chapter meets après run to socialize and carbo-load at a local BYOB establishment.

Wednesday Night Group Runs at Fleet Feet in West Hartford Center: Every Wednesday night at 6:30 p.m. Group runs from Fleet
Feet in West Hartford Center. Run start from the store at 1003-B Farmington Avenue. If you need directions call the store at
860-233-8077. This group runs between 4-5 miles. Men, women and kids are welcome (as are baby joggers and dogs on leashes) – as
well as walkers. Paces vary between 7:00-11:00/mile. Cue cards are passed around before the run begins and try to have a staffer in
the front and rear of the run so no one gets lost. The run is free!
Weekend Running Colchester: Most Saturdays & Sundays, 6:30 a.m. we meet at the Route 149 commuter lot, exit 16 off Route 2.
Pace & length is usually determined before we meet via e-mail but ultimately by those who show up. Please e-mail or call before
showing up unless you’re ok running alone. We usually run on the cinder and level “Airline” rail trail (great for recovery runs) but will
also run the roads to spice things up and when the trail has too much snow. Men & women, boys & girls, fast & slow, peaking or

Saturday Morning Women’s Runs/Walk Continue: Saturday mornings, 7 a.m., 3 or 5-mile run, or 3 mile walk, all levels and
abilities welcome; warm and supportive group. We meet at participants’ homes in the greater Hartford area. For further information

Saturday Morning Long Runs in Farmington: A small group of runners meets on Saturday mornings at 7:00 AM at Brickyard Road

A NOTE ON THE RESULTS BELOW:
The "HTC reports" are attempts to list all the current HTC members who finished the races reported on.
Using Larry Rubin's match-finding computer program, I do searches for performances by HTC members.
If your last name was misspelled in race results posted on a website, if you were left out of an HTC
report, if you want to report an HTC performance in a race not reported on or that no one is likely to do
an HTC report for, or if you are interested in possibly doing HTC reports yourself, contact me at davidreik at comcast dot net. If
you see a report from me of an out-of-state performance, generally someone let me know of the presence of an HTCer in the
race. I also tend to miss, unless tipped off, any performance that's not posted on a website that regularly posts performances
by HTC members. Ray Wise adds the "Age Grade" percentages (with asterisks indicating the highest Age Grade for each race), and
causes all names, towns and ages in HTC race reports to become what they are indicated to be on the latest HTC roster. You can
contact our membership chairman, Mark McCarty, if you want to change your name on the roster to the name you use when you
register for races.
Age Grade explanation: If you ran a performance with an Age Grade of 60%, the theoretical best possible performance for your age
and sex is approximately 60% of the time you ran. There is a nice automatic calculator that uses the 2006 tables at
www.howardgrubb.co.uk/athletics/wmalookup06.html. You can click from there to the actual Excel file used to do the
computations.
To see HTC results from this year and previous years back to 2004, go to http://www.hartfordtrackclub.org/raceresults . There, using
the Excel spreadsheets, you can filter or sort the data to analyze all the results in the databases in many different ways.

In this newsletter, a "PR" after your race time signifies a time better than your best previously established time for that distance in the
HTC-member database for the most recent five calendar years, and an "AR" after the age grade signifies an age-grade better than
your best previously established age-grade for that distance in the HTC-member database for the most recent five calendar years. The
online files will have PRs and ARs underlined for every HTC member and distance. If you have any questions, comments, or
suggestions, just send a message to [email protected].
The online race results spreadsheet (found in the Race Results section of the HTC website) contains an Individual Summary tab, which
shows an individual's best times and age-grades at the popular distances. The Instructions tab will tell you how to compare two sets of
results for specified years or ranges of years.
New age-grade tables have been published, and accepted by the USATF, as of January 2015. The race results in this newsletter are
using the new tables. The results for earlier in 2015 have been updated, and are posted in the Results tab of the HTC website. In
general, age-grades for 5K and longer will be slightly lower with the new tables.

HTC Board of Directors Announcement
At the April 6th, 2015 meeting of the Hartford Track Club, the board members present agreed that
Lani Ralston would move from Secretary to the vacant position of Club Race Director.

members then elected Cheryl Cunningham to the post of Secretary. The changes take effect from

West Farms Mall. Take Exit 40, Corbins Corner from I-84. We are on the upper level, next to Macy’s and the mall security office.
