NEWSLETTER #9
April 30th, 2015
Dear Parents
With April having come and gone, we are down to our final two months of the school
year! With the warmer weather this week, spring is certainly in the air!
We would like to update you on a couple of staffing items. First, we would like to
congratulate Mrs. Taylor who has informed us that she will be retiring at the end of this
year. Mrs. Taylor is currently our Early Literacy teacher, teaches some grade 4 health and
kindergarten music, and has also spent many years teaching kindergarten. During her
time at HMK, she has been responsible for teaching hundreds of children to read – what a
glorious gift to give a child! Mrs. Taylor is without question a reading expert, and we will
miss her expertise around the school (but we hope that she will be back to sub often!).
We would like to congratulate Mrs. Taylor on a wonderful career, and wish her all the
best as she embarks on the next phase of her life!
With Mrs. Taylor leaving at the end of the year, we would like to announce that Mrs.
Ashlee Plett will be moving into the Early Literacy role in our school, and that Mrs.
Byram will remain as half time kindergarten teacher. We are very pleased to be able to
keep both Mrs. Plett and Mrs. Byram on staff, and that each will be able to continue to do
a great job working with the kids in their care!
A topic that often comes up when talking about kids (and adults too!) is body image.
This is a very important topic – one that we all need to take into consideration when
dealing with our children. It is important that we talk to our children and make sure they
know that people come in all shapes and sizes, and that it can be hurtful or disrespectful
to make comments about anyone’s weight or physical features. It is helpful to focus on
health and wellbeing rather than weight. As adults, we need to model healthy habits and
actions, and avoid going on short term “diets”. Rather than talking about “good” and
“bad” foods, we should talk about healthy choices. Building activity into daily routines is
also an excellent idea. Not only is it good for you, it provides a positive model for your
children to grow up with. Talking to your children about images that they see in the
media is also important. Kids often compare themselves to these images, which can
create unnecessary pressure and stress. Encourage your kids to look for realistic images,
and be sure to talk to them about those images that are unrealistic. Creating a home
atmosphere that is centered around healthy choices, regular activity, and realistic body
images will lay the foundation for a lifetime of health and wellbeing! (adapted from the
Dieticians of Canada – see www.dietitians.ca for more information and tips.)

Cuisine Francais
Our grade 1 and 2 classes were fortunate to host Emmanual
and Chef Christophe for two days of Cuisine Francais! Each
class had a session in which they learned about nutrition,
made a delicious wrap, and learned French in the process!
This project was made possible by the French Second
Language Revitalization Grant – we are appreciative of the
enhancements we are able to make to our French program as
a result of this
grant!
Spring Fling
The Spring Fling was another huge success this year! There was a
great turnout and a fun time was had by all! The kids danced up
a storm, and were proud to show off the dances that they have
been learning in gym classes! Part way through
the Spring Fling we had our raffle for the grade
5/6 camp trip. The winner of the Asus 8” Tablet
was Hazel Pascual, while Novie Penãno won the Zephyr
Wireless Bluetooth speaker. Sellers of the two winning
tickets were Enzo Pascual and Ivan Alday, who each received
$20 for selling a winning ticket. We would like to thank all
of the staff members who came out to help at the Spring
Fling – we had staff working the coat room, running the water
station, supervising the MPR, helping out in the
gym, selling raffle tickets and sitting at the silver
collection. We would also like to thank Mr. Murray
for playing the music, and Mrs. Douglas for setting
up the play list, teaching the kids all the dances, and
for providing so much encouragement for them to
get dancing!
Grade 5’s at Country Meadows
Grade Five students have been enjoying their visits to Country Meadows. Last month,
one of the residents organized an Easter coloring contest. All grade five students
participated and the entries were judged by many of the residents and staff. Winners of
the contest each received some special Easter treats.
These are the students who won the Easter coloring contest organized by a resident 'Grandpa' at
Country Meadows.
New Canadian Kid
We were very pleased to host Manitoba Theatre for
Young People’s production of “New Canadian Kid”. It
was an excellent show that really helped all kids
understand what it must feel like to be “the new kid” in
a new culture, speaking a new language. We would
like to thank Beautiful Plains School Division for
sponsoring the performance.
HMK White Out!
In support of the Winnipeg Jets, HMK
had their own whiteout on the day of
what turned out to be their last game of
the season. We were impressed to see all
of the white clothing, and hope that the
Jets come back with an even better
season next year!
Parent Council
The Parent Council was busy at their March meeting deciding how the remaining
fundraising dollars should be allocated. The Gourmet Kitchen orders made
$2636.80. In the end, this is how we decided to allocate the funds:
•
•
•
Playground Fund: $500
New drums for music room: $825
Outdoor education materials: $635
Discussion about a different fundraising opportunity also took place.
Our final meeting of the year will take place on Tuesday, May 19th, at 7:00 pm
in the HMK Staff Room. Babysitting and coffee will be provided.
Garden Club Plant Sale
The Green Thumbs Garden Club is planning another
plant sale with a tentative date of May 21st. The sale
will take place at lunch time. We usually have some
vegetables such as tomatoes and peppers, annual
flowers and perennials. Please check Mrs. MacPhee's
website in a few weeks’ time for more details.
NOTE: We currently are in need of plant pots so the
garden club kids can start plants for the plant sale. If
you have any that you could spare, please bring
them in right away. Thanks.
Our Green Thumb classroom garden has produced lettuce,
tomatoes, peppers, basil and beans. Last week we made our own
salad dressing to add to our produce. With our early spring we
have also begun to plant vegetables in the planters beside the play
structure. We noticed footprints on our newly planted
beds. Please encourage children to respect our garden plantings.
Bicycle Safety Reminder
We would like to remind everyone that bicycles are only to be ridden to school by
students in grade 2 and up. Even though a number of students in kindergarten and grade
1 may be very good bike riders, we only want students riding to school who are in grade 2
or older. We appreciate your understanding and cooperation in this.
THANKS TO:
Classroom Volunteers: Gail Wutke
All the parents that have come out for our run club. Your help is greatly appreciated!
