As you might be aware, residents at Mesa Housing were evacuated 3/18/15 due to a disturbance that occurred in one of the North Mesa Apartments. We greatly appreciate the cooperation of all residents throughout the morning and wanted to provide you with a brief summary and update regarding the incident. Over the next few hours, SDPD and UCSD PD attempted to get the remaining two occupants in the apartment to voluntarily come out. Eventually all occupants complied and were detained by police. Residents who were evacuated were then allowed to return to their apartments. No one was injured during the incident. At approximately 1:30 a.m. on 3/18/15, UC San Diego Police (UCSD PD) received a call of a domestic disturbance in the 3900 block of Miramar Street. Officers arrived and, as they were approaching the apartment, a firearm discharge was heard. Officers took positions on the perimeter of the apartment to contain the situation and called the San Diego Police Department (SDPD) for assistance. San Diego Police arrived and interviewed one of the residents who had subsequently exited the apartment. Based upon this information the surrounding apartments were evacuated as a safety precaution. Café Vita was opened to accommodate displaced residents. One of the apartment occupants was ultimately arrested for possessing, brandishing and negligently discharging a firearm. The other two occupants provided statements to the police and were later released. The apartment unit was thoroughly searched and all weapons were seized as evidence. The investigation is ongoing. Anyone with information regarding this incident should contact UCSD PD Detective Mike Williams at 858-534-9517 or [email protected]. As a reminder, California law and UC San Diego Policies prohibit the possession of firearms in UC San Diego Housing and on campus. If you possess a firearm that you need assistance in storing off campus, please contact UCSD Police Department at 858-534-4357 (HELP). They will assist you in locating a storage facility. Also, UC San Diego Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) offers confidential counseling services to all registered students. To schedule an appointment, please call 858-534-3755. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact the Residential Services Office at 858-822-3291.
