away at 858-534-4357. As police officers it is their responsibility to investigate reports so don’t make assumptions. As Chief Rose says “help us to help you”
Residential Security Officers (RSOs) are here to assist you in the evenings when our offices are closed. If you have a noise or safety concern in the community,
you may contact Campus Police at 858-534-4357. An RSO or Police Officer will be dispatched to respond to the concern.
As you might be aware, residents at Mesa Housing
were evacuated 3/18/15 due to a disturbance that
occurred in one of the North Mesa Apartments. We
greatly appreciate the cooperation of all residents
throughout the morning and wanted to provide
you with a brief summary and update regarding the
incident.
Over the next few hours, SDPD and UCSD PD
attempted to get the remaining two occupants in
the apartment to voluntarily come out. Eventually all
occupants complied and were detained by police.
Residents who were evacuated were then allowed
to return to their apartments. No one was injured
during the incident.
At approximately 1:30 a.m. on 3/18/15, UC San
Diego Police (UCSD PD) received a call of a domestic
disturbance in the 3900 block of Miramar Street.
Officers arrived and, as they were approaching the
apartment, a firearm discharge was heard. Officers
took positions on the perimeter of the apartment
to contain the situation and called the San Diego
Police Department (SDPD) for assistance. San Diego
Police arrived and interviewed one of the residents
who had subsequently exited the apartment. Based
upon this information the surrounding apartments
were evacuated as a safety precaution. Café Vita
was opened to accommodate displaced residents.
One of the apartment occupants was ultimately
arrested for possessing, brandishing and negligently
discharging a firearm. The other two occupants
provided statements to the police and were later
released. The apartment unit was thoroughly
searched and all weapons were seized as evidence.
The investigation is ongoing.
Anyone with
information regarding this incident should contact
UCSD PD Detective Mike Williams at 858-534-9517
or [email protected].
As a reminder, California law and
UC San Diego Policies prohibit the
possession of firearms in UC San
Diego Housing and on campus.
If you possess a firearm that you
need assistance in storing off
campus, please contact UCSD Police
Department at 858-534-4357 (HELP).
They will assist you in locating
a storage facility.
Also, UC San Diego Counseling and Psychological
Services (CAPS) offers confidential counseling
services to all registered students. To schedule an
appointment, please call 858-534-3755.
If you have any questions or concerns, please
contact the Residential Services Office
at 858-822-3291.
Town Hall Meeting updates
A Town Hall Meeting was held on March 25, 2015 at Café Vita (located at the One Miramar Street
Apartments). Residents of both the Mesa Residential and One Miramar Street Apartments were invited to
attend. The Design/Build team from Mithun/Hensel Phelps presented architectural renderings and provided
an overall construction plan detailing unit types, amenities, design, and a tentative construction schedule.
Residents in attendance discussed topics such as:
•
Mesa resident relocation process and timeline
•
Gilman Bridge construction, traffic impact and connectivity to campus
•
Current Mesa amenity relocation plans
•
New building plant selection
•
Construction materials
•
Construction times
•
Parking and general security concerns
•
Bicycle security and storage options that would be offered with the new housing project
Representatives from Housing were also present to answer questions and provided renderings of the
Mesa amenity relocation plan, past ARCH Newsletter building update articles, and renderings of the new
Graduate and Professional Student Mixed-Use Housing (GPSMH) project. Housing will be working on
adding the GPSMH renderings to our website.
Attendees and residents are encouraged to send their GPSMH project suggestions as well as any
questions to [email protected]. Additional Town Hall meetings will be held monthly to provide residents
additional opportunities to provide suggestions and have their questions or concerns answered. Keep an
eye on your email and the ARCH monthly newsletter for upcoming Town Hall dates!
