AT CURTIN
Biomedical sciences began at Curtin in the
1960s to train medical laboratory scientists.
Since then our School of Biomedical Sciences
has grown to become recognised as a place
of innovation, leading-edge teaching and
research.
We have a strong and growing research focus,
aided by qualified, industry-experienced and
professional staff who help our students to
achieve their goals.

RESEARCH DEGREES
Curtin’s School of Biomedical Sciences conducts research
programs in many disciplines and is a founding member of the
Western Australian Biomedical Research Institute (WABRI). It
is also major stakeholder in a $35 million, world-class CHIRI
Biosciences Research Precinct that has been established at
Curtin University to drive forward the search for new and
improved methods of diagnosis and discovery of medicines key
to fighting chronic diseases afflicting people worldwide.
Our biomedical science research priority areas include:
• biotechnology
• cancer – diagnosis and immunotherapy
• cell biology and signalling
• biomolecular modelling, bioinformatics, systems biology and
drug discovery
• metabolic health, disease and pathogenesis (including
neurodegenerative diseases)
• microbiology (including infectious disease control and
environmental microbiology)
• molecular genetics
• stem cell biology and tissue regeneration.
We offer the following biomedical postgraduate research courses:
• Master of Philosophy (MPhil) in Biomedical Science
• Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Biomedical Science.

An approved bachelor degree in a biology or biomedical/life
science based discipline or equivalent (with a history of above

COURSEWORK DEGREES
Biomedical Science M/GDip
These courses allow you to focus on
molecular biotechnology or infectious
diseases and microbiology, or on a
blend of the two fields, through choice of
optional units.
These courses include laboratory
classes that can develop your research
capabilities and technical skills, such as
DNA cloning and sequencing. An advanced
laboratory unit and/or individual
research projects can also develop your
professional research skills. Practical work
includes experimental design for real-life
situations, including technique selection
and problem solving in the laboratory.
Alternatively, project units can be used
for biological and medical research at
a theoretical level, advancing critical
analysis of scientific literature and the
formulation of novel hypotheses and
research proposals.
CAREER OUTLOOK
You will graduate with the knowledge
and practical skills required to work at
an advanced level in the biomedical
sector and other biotechnology related
industries.
Graduates can seek employment in:
• biotechnology and allied industries
• government
• hospital and university research and
development laboratories
• in other professions that require an
advanced understanding of molecular
biosciences.
