MUSEUM NEWS
HEARD MUSEUM TO RECEIVE PIPER TRUST GRANT FOR
GALLERY RENOVATION
The Heard Museum has been awarded a $1.25 million grant from Virginia G. Piper
Charitable Trust to create a new gallery within the existing structure. Construction on the
6,500-square-foot “Grand Gallery” is set to begin in fall 2016. “We are honored to receive
this grant and very excited to be working with Piper Trust on realizing this critical initiative
for the future of the Heard Museum. Creating this new expanded gallery by renovating
existing spaces opens our doors to a multitude of world-class exhibits and programming
opportunities,” said John Bulla, interim director and CEO of the Heard. Features will
include energy-efficient, state-of-the-art technology, including digital communications
platforms and interactive exhibit capabilities. Once completed, this important project will
further the Heard Museum’s ability to educate and inspire audiences about the indigenous
cultures and peoples of the Southwest.
HEARD MUSEUM, FELLOW CENTRAL ARTS DISTRICT
MEMBERS CELEBRATE DEDICATION OF CENTRAL ARTS PLAZA
The Heard joined several other midtown Phoenix arts venues grouped in the Central Arts
District on March 4 to celebrate the formal dedication of the Central Arts Plaza.
Phoenix Mayor Greg Stanton cut a ribbon dedicating the plaza, a garden and
amphitheater venue just outside the former Viad Tower, 1850 N. Central Ave., which
combined have been designated by the city as centerpieces of the district. The relatively
new district means increased opportunities for the Heard, such as the possibility of
partnering with other venues in the group in order to create more variety for potential
visitors. Ann Marshall, the Heard’s director of curation and education, said this will draw
attention to opportunities to explore a wide range of visual and performing arts centers
that are close to the Valley Metro light rail line.
The district was formally established in May 2014. Its boundaries are Virginia Avenue on
the north, Roosevelt Street on the south, Seventh Street on the east and Seventh Avenue
on the west. The 24-story tower, which continues to house the headquarters of the Viad
Corporation, has been renamed the Central Arts Plaza Tower.
