Printing of this HEARTS FOR THE HOMELESS® newsletter and other materials is provided by BUFFALO PRINTING COMPANY,2620 ELMWOOD AVE., BUFFALO, NY14217 (PHONE: 716-877-9444) VISIT US ON THE WEB heartsforthehomeless.org THE OFFICIAL NEWSLETTER OF HEARTS FOR THE HOMELESS OF WNY, INC.® MAY, 2015 IS IT NOT TO SHARE YOUR FOOD WITH THE HUNGRY AND TO PROVIDE THE POOR WANDERER WITH SHELTER On Our Hearts …Message from Ron Calandra One out of every six Americans goes hungry on a daily basis. We can’t emphasize enough what we continue to see on the streets. Over the last month, our client numbers are at record highs. We don’t know what to link it to other than a poor economy. In comparing the last three years, Hearts found that the number of clients served in 2014 went down slightly from 2013. But, 2015 is already surpassing these last two years in “total clients served” and the number of these clients that are homeless. The National Coalition for the Homeless (NCH) gives good information on their site, nationalhomeless.org that confirms the very reason why Hearts for the Homeless continues to exist after 25 years of providing the exact same service, year after year, of feeding simple but nutritious meals, without question, to those who stand in line, day in and day out, in desperation. Current research from the NCH shows that 46 million Americans visit food-sharing programs annually. “When people experiencing homelessness can depend on consistent, reliable food-sharing programs, they can at least be sure that their most basic need will be met. Too often, it can be a full-time job keeping track of where and when these programs are available. It is a huge physical and emotional strain to walk the long distances between these programs, with hopes of not missing the narrow window available to receive a meal. Programs that meet homeless individuals where they are, generally in public spaces, are paramount. Not only are people generally more comfortable accepting help, but they save time and energy, which they may use to address their other needs.” National Coalition for the Homeless 2015 This article substantiates Hearts mission to the homeless and poor in Buffalo. It goes on to say that “addressing hunger is a moral imperative, which draws in thousands of volunteers who feel compelled to help their neighbors in need.” Hearts believes it is our biblical duty and commandment of God. We are very grateful for our faithful volunteers who carry out our programs and feel this same moral obligation to their neighbors. Please remember the homeless & poor this summer. We would like to say a special STIL “Thank You!” to our donor who donated the needed 78 tubes of toothpaste L and 30 toothbrushes LOW that we posted a need for last month! ON SAN HEARTS THRIFT SHOP NEWS ISAIAH 58:7 Come in and Shop! 890 Tonawanda St. Monday - Saturday 10am to 5pm Profits help us, help the homeless. Our Thrift Shop staff has been helping customers with more than shopping! They prayed for Gloria who needed a job and was going on a interview. Gloria got the job! Heather came in with a cancer diagnosis; she’d already lost most of her hair from treatments. She was told she needed a mastectomy. Hearts ladies asked if she would like them to pray for her. Heather was so encouraged that they would take the time just for her. In the thrift shop’s break area they prayed…Heather left that day with a peace of mind and reported back later that her surgery was successful! Even our customers give back: A big thank you to the gentleman customer in the cash-out line who paid $5 toward the bill of another customer that didn’t have enough money to pay for all of her purchases. It allowed her to not have to put anything back. It’s not always about shopping. We want to be sensitive to those who might come in carrying a burden or have a need and fulfill the same commandment Hearts for the Homeless lives by in caring for our neighbor.
