Nicolas Monneyron - Heating and Cooling in the European Energy

Use of Geothermal resources
for district heating
a 35-years experience in the Paris Basin
the « doublet » technology for District Heating
Shallow
DOGGER – 2000 meters deep
Heating and Cooling in the European Energy Transition
History and Objectives
55 doublets implemented between 1975 to 1986
 34 in operation for more than 30 years
 Abandoned after 1986
For Deep geothermal, National Renewable Energy
Action Plan consider increase from 155 ktoe in
2006 to 500 ktoe in 2020.

Heat pumps for geothermal district heating
 The benefict of a heat pump :
 Increase the temperature level of the geothermal water to the level of the district
heating distribution temperature,
 Extract as much heat energy as possible from geothermal water
before it is injected back into the reservoir,
 Produce or increase renewable cooling …
 For the project availability :
 Production of domestic hot water on base load when geothermal ressouce is < 60°C ,
 Increase the geothermal energy (MWh ) in the heat production with reduce marginal
investment (compare to the wells),
 Increase and stabilize the geothermal power (MW) in all the heat season,
Increase the potential of geothermal district heating projets in Paris Basin, France
and Europe !

The Exemple of Paris (18éme)
 The plant draws geothermal heat
from the reservoir at a depth of
1,600 meters and a temperature
of 55°C.
 The geothermal energy is
recovered using heat pumps (10
MW) that are able to
simultaneously produce
renewable thermal energy for
both heating and cooling,
Exemple of Arcueil Gentilly
 A Geothermal Doublet at 1600 metres deep and 62°C
completed by:
 6 MW Screw Heat Pump,
 6MW Centrifugal Heat pump.
 Total : 48 MW Geothermal and Gas for 100 GWh of heat
