Did you know that some people in the area refer to our organization as the Community Center for Hempfield Area? It’s a fitting title because of the diverse programs and activities we provide for all generations. We also are located geographically right in the middle of the Hempfield School District borders—a convenient location for everyone. Whether you refer to us as the Rec Center or the Community Center, we are one in the same providing quality services to all. HARC received regional and statewide recognition recently. We received recognition from USTA Middle States as a premier tennis facility for 2015. This designation is awarded to organizations for excellent programs, staffing and ability to conduct quality tournaments and education and workshops. Statewide recognition was also received from PA Parks and Recreation Society (PRPS) with an Award for Excellence for our “Everyone Belongs” Community Campaign in 2014. We were recognized for our community fundraising efforts in exceeding our goal of $30,000 and providing financial assistance to those less fortunate. Our staff has planned a memorable summer for our community. The summer playground program is back for its 37th year. Members will see added value to their membership with the use of East Petersburg Community Pool. Swimming lessons, pool www.hempfieldrec.com Mission Statement We are a non-profit organization committed to providing positive, fun experiences and value through a variety of relevant wellness programs and events inclusive to all members of the community. Summer 2015 rentals, and water exercise classes will enhance the summer experience at East Pete. We continue to “Open Doors to Wellness” for the active SilverSneakers® and Silver&Fit® Fitness Program. A highlight for the summer will be the Koser Jeweler’s $25,000 USTA Tennis Challenge August 9–16. This international women’s tennis event provides quality competition by up-and-coming professional players culminating with the championship match on Sunday, August 15. The conclusion of summer is marked with the 16th Annual Amos Herr 5K Honey Run scheduled for Sunday, August 23. This family event is sponsored by Dutch Gold Honey of Lancaster and Sardina Dental Group and co-presented by Amos Herr Foundation. Check out our programs in HARCOptions and have a safe summer. SUPERVISION OF CHILDREN 12 YEARS OF AGE & UNDER AND NON-SWIMMERS This policy is adopted and implemented to ensure the safety of all children who use the HARC and East Petersburg swimming facilities. Children 12 years of age and under must be supervised by a parent/caregiver. Children must be able to swim 25 meters (one length of the pool) in a confident manner. This means that they are able to swim with a relatively strong stroke and with their face in the water. Testing can be done by any HARC LIFEGUARD and your child’s name will be added to our swimmers book for future reference for our staff. Please note that HARC lifeguards and other aquatic staff are not babysitters and are not available nor are they assigned for this function. POOL RENTALS AVAILABLE Our pool facility can accommodate small pool parties for birthdays, anniversaries, etc. Pool parties are scheduled during family swim times at HARC and evening and weekends at East Petersburg. Children must be able to swim length of pool in a strong manner with face in water or a parent must accompany child in water. Our lifeguards may conduct a swim test for your child to be entered into our book of swimmers. If your child chooses not to take the test you must be in the water with them. Watch for details in the fall program brochure. 38 CALL US AT 717-898-3102 Summer 2015 Junior Tennis QuickStart Stars The USTA QuickStart Tennis format works by getting kids into the game immediately. Within the first hour of stepping onto the court, they are actually playing the game, rallying with one another, moving around and having fun. We use transition balls that bounce at a height equal to kids' playing abilities. This allows for better and longer rallies and allows them to build all-court games. Spring/Summer—Ending June 1 Mondays, 5:30–6:30 p.m. QuickStart Stars Summer—June 15–Aug. 17 (skip 8/10) Mondays, 11 a.m.–noon QuickStart Stars $8/Member; $11/Non-Member Future Stars This clinic is split into three different ability levels. Beginning on court one we use the USTA QuickStart format, but the difficulty level increases and more points are played. On court two we begin using traditional balls and work on transitioning to the new balls and the juniors stroke production. On court three the players start playing more points as we begin preparing the juniors to play matches and eventually, tournaments. Spring—Ending June 1 Mondays, 5:30–6:30 p.m. Future Stars Summer—June 15–Aug. 17 (skip 8/10) Future Stars Mondays, 11 a.m.–noon $8/Member; $11/Non-Member Super Stars The Super Stars Clinic is for juniors who are competing in district and sectional tournaments as well as competing on high school teams. The focus of this clinic is on tactics, strategy, and some stroke production. We work to develop a core group of juniors who can compete against one another as well as travel together to tournaments and other competitive events. This clinic uses the USTA High Performance format which employs fed ball drills, live ball drills and point play to maximize each players concept comprehension and performance on the court. The Hempfield Rec also offers a great opportunity for all juniors to hone their competitive skills through structured match play.
