PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE
Herndon Community:
We are now approaching the final stretch of the school year!
The fourth quarter of the 2014-2015 school year brings with it many exciting events and activities.
Wednesday, June 17, at 2:00 p.m. marks the graduation of the Class of 2015. The
ceremony will take place at the George Mason University Patriot Center. This is an exciting
and emotional time for all. Parents should be on the lookout for graduation information in the mail
and on the Herndon High School web site. Many students continue to owe fees and dues which must
be paid in full in order to participate in graduation. If you have
questions about these fees please contact the Black office at (703-810-2218). Students
may also see Ms. Laughlin in the finance office before or after school to pay

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
Congratulations to the Class of 2015
and their families! Good Luck in
your future endeavors!
After what seems to have been an
incredibly long and cold winter, it is hard
to think that the school year is almost
over. Spring has finally “sprung,” and
spring sports have wrapped up. The
Theater Department produced another great spring
production, and the final concerts of the year are just around
the corner, not to mention AP exams, SOLs, and finals. And,
let’s not forget our Principal, Mr. Bates was
named FCPS Principal of the Year! Whew!
As we publish our last newsletter of the year, and yet
another school year starts to draw to a close, I want to
recognize all of our Senior Class of 2015 and wish
them well with the next phase of their lives. They’ll
always be part of the Hornet Family and will make us all
very proud! To those parents whose youngest child is
graduating, congratulations and THANK YOU for
your support of Herndon High School over the years. To
those who will continue at HHS, I encourage your active
support and participation of the HHS PTSA programs and
events next year. We need your help!
As my term as HHS PTSA president is nearly done, and my
son Kyle prepares to graduate and leave for Bridgewater
College, I offer my thanks for the help and patience of so
many parents, staff members, and the PTSA Board. I’m
grateful to all who make HHS a special place. I solicit the
same support for our upcoming officers in the PTSA:
President: Walter Alcorn
1st Vice–President: Yelena Barth
2nd Vice–President: Deborah Altman
Recording Secretary: Rose Malatesta
Corresponding Secretary: Cinthia Drake
Treasurer: Vivian Luo
Immediate Past President: Melvin Jones
It has been a truly remarkable year and a cooperative effort
of so many people who have made the year successful:
First and foremost, I want to thank the staff at HHS for all
your support of the HHS PTSA throughout the year and for
the energy, enthusiasm, and compassion you give to our
students every day! Thanks to Principal Williams Bates
and the Administration for your continued partnership
with the PTSA. Thanks to our Faculty Liaison Margo

to HHS.
Thank you to our All Night Grad Chair Kathy Blystone

Hospitality Chair Pallavi Surana for planning our final
event: The Teacher Appreciation Luncheon on May 6th to
honor our staff. Thanks to Jennifer Boysko for bringing a
wonderful Parent Education Programs to HHS; you will
be missed! Thank you to all of our Class Parent Liaisons
and Boosters Liaisons for keeping all the parents
informed of what is going on at HHS with respect to your
individual Classes and groups. Thanks to Jeannie Johns
for continuing to produce this wonderful PTSA
newsletter, and Susy Nixon for folding and mailing
the copies. Thanks to Jennifer James-Samuel for
chairing Touching Bases in the Spring. Thanks to
Gabrielle O’Bryan for producing a great Directory and
Karen McDonald for doing a super job with
Membership! You both will be missed; thank you for your
service! Thanks also to Barb Wells, our HHS
webmaster, for keeping our website up-to-date, and
supporting all the PTSA events.
We have great parent support of our Booster Clubs, PTSA,
Student Clubs, SGA, etc, and it is important to keep this
support going – please continue your involvement and
support. Parental involvement is vital to our children’s
success in high school.
It has been a blessing and pleasure to serve!

NOTES FROM THE CLINIC
Dear Parents,
There are a few end of the year issues for you to be aware of. Those of you whose children have
medication in the clinic need to pick up your student’s medication. You should be getting
a KIT note if your child has meds. If medication is not picked up by the end of the school year,
it will be disposed of since we cannot keep medication in the clinic through the summer.
Since this is High School, your student may carry over-the-counter medication only home with
them at the end of the year.
As a reminder, you need a new medication form for next school year. There is a hot link to the appropriate forms on the
web page. Click on Forms and it will take you to the page for forms. You may also call the school to pick up a new form.
Also, remember that there are 3 different forms: medication, inhaler and epinephrine and that we do need a provider’s
signature for all medications except over-the-counter meds for pain ONLY. The clinic will be open for half a day in late
August to accept medications. The date will be in your back to school packet.
With summer here, I would like to remind you that the health department wants
you to check your yards for mosquito breeding places.
1.
Mosquitoes can breed in as little as a couple of tablespoons of water. Check
your yard and dump out any water you find.
2. Turn anything that can hold water upside down or cover it.
3. These simple tips will help to control the spread of West Nile Virus and other
mosquito borne diseases.
Also, remember to use your sun screen, hats and cover up to avoid exposure to UV
rays this summer. Sunburns carry unhappy consequences in the growth of skin cancer.

HORNET PARENT RECEIVES TOWN’S DISTINGUISHED SERVICE
AWARD
Congratulations to long-time community volunteer and Hornet Parent Amy Peterson for being a winner of the Town
of Herndon's 2015 Distinguished Service Award. Amy’s youngest child is a senior at HHS this year. She was
nominated for the award by Herndon Youth Soccer.
Like many parents, Amy’s resume of volunteerism to schools and
youth organizations is impressive. She has: served HYS in many
capacities since 2001; was a mentor and coordinator for the Naomi
Project; was a co-leader for Girl Scouts; was a Hiddenbrook swim
team rep; was president of the Dranesville Elementary PTA; was a
Girls on the Run coach; was the volunteer coordinator for Herndon
MS PTA; was parent coordinator for HHS JV Cheer; was a HHS
Drama Boosters board member; was a HHS Choir Boosters
concessions coordinator; and was HHS All Night Graduation
Celebration volunteer.
A number of other Hornet Parents were recognized for serving a
variety of organizations at the Mayor’s Volunteer Appreciation Night,
including Past President Stephanie McClellan who was nominated
by the HHS PTSA.
HERNDON HIGH SCHOOL RECEIVES RAMP DESIGNATION
Herndon High School will receive the Recognized ASCA Model Program (RAMP) designation during a
special ceremony at the American School Counselor Association’s annual conference in Phoenix,
Arizona. The schools will be honored on June 30 for making an exemplary commitment to comprehensive school
counseling programs. The RAMP designation, awarded to schools that align with the criteria set in the ASCA National
Model, recognizes schools that are committed to delivering a comprehensive, data-driven school counseling program and
an exemplary educational environment. More than 550 schools have been designated as RAMP since the program’s
inception.
Jill Cook, ASCA assistant director and RAMP coordinator, said this year’s recipients are to be commended for their
dedication to serving all students and demonstrating how effective school counseling programs can make a difference in
students’ lives. “This year’s RAMP honorees have shown their commitment to students and the school counseling
profession,” Cook said. “This designation distinguishes these schools and encourages school counselors nationwide to
continue to strive for success.” RAMP applications are reviewed once a year by a panel of school counseling professionals,
who assess a school counseling program in 12 different areas of program expertise.

BAND NOTES
Annual District Concert Assessments
Congratulations to the Symphonic Band and the Wind Ensemble on their terrific performances at this year’s VBODA Concert Assessments which were held at Washington-Lee High School on March 20 and 21. The Symphonic Band received an
overall excellent rating and the Wind Ensemble earned a superior rating. With these ratings in hand, Herndon High has
also received the status of Virginia Honor Band for the third year in a row. This award is earned by bands who receive
superior ratings at both the state marching festival and the district concert festival. It is the highest honor awarded by
VBODA. As director Kathleen Jacoby was out on maternity leave at the time of the assessments, interim director
Stacey Kropaczek took over, preparing both bands for the competition. Kropaczek praised the work of the students, saying, "I'm going to miss coming to Herndon every day, and I will definitely miss the kids. I can only hope other schools are
filled with such entertaining, helpful, driven people." The HHS Band Parents Association and the entire band community
extend their thanks to Ms. Kropaczek for her hard work as well.
Winter Guard Achievements
Herndon's Indoor Guard or Winter Guard had a successful season despite the challenges presented by the wintry weather
and resulting cancellations of practices. This year's show was called "Scarecrow" and was based on a song of the same
name from pop duo Alex and Sierra. Coach Laura Flyte expressed enthusiasm about this year's routine. "Our Scarecrow
show depicts a band of scarecrows coming to life and performing through the night to become scarecrows again at the finale," Flyte said. Results from recent Winter Guard competitions were as follows:





Feb. 14: Placed 7th in AIA Regional Competition at Mt Vernon HS
Feb. 28: Placed 3rd in AIA Regional Competition hosted by TJ at South County HS
Mar. 14: Placed 2nd in AIA Regional Competition at Freedom HS
Mar. 21: Placed 5th at AIA Regional Competition at Broad Run HS
Mar. 28: Competed in the AIA Regional Championship, placing 6th in Preliminaries and 7th in Finals
Winter Drumline
The HHS Winter Drumline was the Percussion Scholastic Regional A division Bronze Medalist at the Atlantic Indoor Association North Championships at Robinson High School. The Drumline gave two outstanding performances that day and
placed 3rd in Finals. Congratulations to Coach Aubrey Adams and to all of the students for their hard work and perseverance, especially in light of all of the winter-related cancellations they faced this year.
All-State Band
After nine students were selected to participate in the All-District Band, three members earned a position in the All-State
Band. Two juniors, Jacob Reeves on percussion and Aimee Toner on flute, and one freshman, James Adams on percussion, competed with more than 1,000 students from across the state to earn these positions. Reeves and Adams ranked
4th and 22nd out of 73 competing percussionists, while Toner obtained a ranking of 13 out of 65 flutes. The three students
traveled to Christopher Newport University to participate in the All-State Festival held on April 9 through April 11.
Spring Trip to Walt Disney World
On April 22nd, the Pride of Herndon embarked on a trip to Walt
Disney World where they were invited to participate in some
wonderfully enriching events. The concert bands attended a Disney Performing Arts workshop called "You're Instrumental" at an
Epcot recording studio, where they learned and played several
famous Disney songs and received a recording of their performance. The color guard participated in the "Auxiliration" workshop where they learned a new routine in under two hours and
then performed it with Disney dancers. And for their grand finale,
on the night of Saturday, April 25, the entire group led the Main
Street Electrical Parade in the Magic Kingdom. Marching in this
parade is one of the highest honors the Walt Disney Company can
bestow on a marching band. More than 75 friends and family
members were there to cheer them on as The Pride went marching by with LED lights on their hats, their flags and even their
drum sticks, while playing “Cantina” from Star Wars. It was great
fun to watch and a truly amazing experience for everyone involved!

SENIOR NAVAL SCIENCE INSTRUCTOR RETIRES
AFTER FIFTEEN YEARS OF SERVICE TO HHS
June 2015 will prove to be bittersweet for Herndon High as it bids farewell and best wishes to an instructor who has been
an integral part of the community for the past fifteen years – Commander Richard Cassara, U. S. Navy (Retired). After
a distinguished military career, CDR Cassara continued his service to his country and its youth by becoming a Senior Naval
Science Instructor. Herndon High’s Naval Junior ROTC cadets, and the school as a whole, were fortunate to have his service for fifteen years. A 1974 graduate of the U. S. Naval Academy, CDR Cassara enjoyed a highly successful Naval Flight
Officer career that included multiple leadership positions. These ranged from being the Flight Test Operations Officer for
the Tomahawk Cruise Missile Program to the Naval Forces Planner on the staff of the Chairman, Joint Chiefs of Staff.
These positions also included numerous deployments, such as a highly successful combat cruise aboard the USS RANGER
in support of Operation DESERT STORM and later as Commanding Officer of VA-145 in support of Operation SOUTHERN
WATCH, during which the “Swordsmen” earned many awards including the RADM C. Wade McClusky Trophy as the best
Attack Squadron in the Navy. In all, CDR Cassara logged over 3800 flight hours and 680 carrier landings, and he received
many notable awards. These include the Distinguished Flying Cross with Combat “V” (2), the Defense Meritorious Service
Medal, the Meritorious Service Medal (2), the Air Medal with Combat “V” (3), the Navy Commendation Medal (3), and the
Navy Achievement Medal.
CDR Cassara retired from active duty in 1994, and, in September 2000,
after studying secondary education at George Mason University and
instructing at another high school, he became Herndon High’s Senior Naval
Science Instructor. Since that time, he has devoted significant time before,
during, and after school to teach, develop, and mentor future leaders, who
take varying life journeys ranging from enlisting in the armed forces to
furthering their education at prestigious military academies and public/
private universities. He has instilled his dedication to honor, courage, and
commitment in over 1,500 young people, who have carried on his devotion
to excellence individually and collectively. As a unit, Herndon High’s
Naval Junior ROTC cadets have:

Enjoyed the out of doors, such as during Orienteering, where they have competed in the national championship for the
past three years; and

Exceled in marksmanship, with a competitive team that has won the Fairfax County Junior ROTC Air Rifle
Competition ten of the fifteen years of its existence and that, as recently as 2015, has had members represent the unit
and Herndon High at the State, Regional, and National Championship levels.
In all, CDR Cassara selflessly served the United States for over forty years, over a third of which Herndon High and the
community greatly benefited. He will be missed, and his positive impact will be valued for generations.
Honor * Courage * Commitment.
