What is The Institute?
The Institute exists to provide high quality lifelong learning for the community
just as it has done since the days of our founder Dame Henrietta Barnett.
Dame Henrietta was a pioneering philanthropist who believed in providing
cultural and educational opportunities for all. Today we offer some 400 courses a
year across the subject spectrum. Our students range in age from 8 to 80 and
beyond and come from many different communities and walks of life.
Why choose The Institute
Whether you are studying for work or pleasure, whatever your age or
educational background, you will receive a warm welcome here and help in
achieving your goals.

Our courses are available on a part-time, full-time, day, evening and weekend
basis. You can choose from a full 3 term course to a one day workshop.
We have over 100 years experience of providing adult education across
North London and beyond. Our track record of delivering high quality,
excellent results and good value for money – means that many of our
students return year after year.

How to find us
Our Summer term courses will take place at our new home Masons House in
Kingsbury, Bishop Douglass School and The Archer Academy in East Finchley.
For details on how to find us, please see pages 62 & 63 of this prospectus.
One day courses
Please note: if you withdraw from a one day course without giving at least
48 hours notice, no credit will be issued and you will forfeit your fee.
Student Identity Cards
The Institute operates a student identity card system. All students will need to
have their identity verified and students enrolling on any course which lasts
longer than a one or two day workshop will need a photographic identity card.
Students will need to bring their ID card each time they come to class.

September 2015 to July 2016
This comprehensive and accredited art course is delivered over 3 terms and
is designed to prepare students for entry onto an art degree course or for
other career choices in the fields of art and design. It is validated by Gateway
Qualifications and students will achieve an Access to HE Level 3 Diploma in
Art and Design. It is suitable for both school leavers and mature students.
Students are helped to realise their full potential in art and design by acquiring
traditional skills which they can develop into specialist areas of their choice
and they receive strong tutorial support. In the first term students follow a
timetable planned to introduce them to a wide range of art curriculum
subjects with an emphasis on learning core skills which can be combined
and extended creatively.
In the second term in addition to the continuing core programme, students
will focus on specialist areas and each student will be given an individual
timetable appropriate for their chosen areas of study.

Art Foundation
In the third term students will continue to develop their abilities and
consolidate their skills into a major project and final exhibition.
