A charter member of the Guitar Foundation of America, Mary Jo Disler recently retired from 27 years as adjunct
instructor of guitar. Most recently at Oakland Community College, Farmington Hills, she also began guitar courses at The
University of Michigan-Dearborn and Mercy College of Detroit. A church musician as well, she holds three music degrees:
B.Mus. from Wittenberg University, Springfield, Ohio, and two M.Mus. degrees from The Univ. of Michigan, Ann Arbor.
“BY an adult guitar beginner, FOR adult beginners.” Originally trained in piano and organ, the author was an adult
beginner on guitar. All the joys and frustrations of learning a new instrument were very real! But her exceptional background, along with the chance to try ideas while teaching college classes, led her to design and write a method that
“thinks like adult beginners.” She knew what the gaps in other methods are, and filled them in. Guitar QuickStart™
balances structured learning with the spirit of improvising so natural to the guitar. The result: a very satisfying method for
learning and teaching.

review
Helpful, very easy to understand, September 27, 1999.
I have to learn to play the guitar for a television project and as I was looking for a book suited for someone like me who had
never even touched a guitar before. I found “Guitar Quickstart” and it is perfect! Some of the other books that I came
across were way too hard to understand, but “Guitar Quickstart” breaks it down just right. It has very helpful “fill-in-theblank” exercises in the workbook that really makes learning the guitar fun. It’s totally the type of book I was looking for! It
has made me want to stick with learning the guitar after the project is over. Kudos to the author for writing such a wonderful book!! - Christopher Ewing, Emmy Award winning actor/producer

Guitar QuickStart: Introduction
◗ Introduction
Guitar QuickStart is an entry-level book. It is the result of over twenty years of teaching
guitar: both privately and in classes for beginners at college level. Both note-reading and chord
/ rhythm playing are presented. The approach is straight-ahead practicality for students anxious
to play the instrument. There is nothing quite so practical, however, as establishing a thought
process – or theory – which will enable one to access material beyond the basics. That is the
intent of this book. Direction in "how to play" is accompanied by information and workbook
material relating the guitar to music theory. Following QuickStart, students may continue with
one of the many excellent methods for either classic or steel-string guitar.
The guitar is a wonderful learning experience because it is accessible through both graphics and
music staff notation. Each system communicates something that the other cannot. Working
together, they provide insight into skill, technique and musical logic. The string-and-fretboard
grid of the guitar permits a graphic reference known as "tablature." Tablature has an important
historic role in guitar music, especially prior to 1750. In the late eighteenth century, however,
experiments modelled on writing for violin eventually led to the adoption of staff notation as the
standard for classic guitar music. Any serious student of guitar today must learn to read music.
Guitar QuickStart is a unique modern text because it uses a simplified version of tablature for
the express purpose of relating music staff notation to the fretboard. Tablature is having a
modern day revival in many publications for guitar. Most of these books, however, use it as a
substitute for learning to read. In QuickStart, tablature is not used as a crutch to avoid true
music reading: Rather, it is intended to be a temporary tool for helping new music readers
visualize the relationship between the fretboard and notation.
Guitar QuickStart is an excellent resource for classes in beginning guitar. Most of this book can
be taught in a one semester course of two credit hours. Many aspiring guitarists are
experiencing music study for the first time. Learning to read rhythmic notation can be especially
vexing for beginners. A valuable by-product of learning music from guitar is that chord work
provides the opportunity to read rhythmic notation independently. – And rhythms are
associated with physical motion through strumming patterns. In addition, the association of
music notation to fretboard through tablature is a very practical testing device for teachers.
Guitar QuickStart can be self-studied to great advantage. There is, however, no real substitute
for working with a good teacher. The subtleties of technique and sound simply cannot be
conveyed through any book. – Nor can the special needs and talents of an individual be
adequately met.
It is the author's sincere wish that you will have fun with Guitar QuickStart and that it will be
of genuine value in working toward your goals on the guitar.
