These programmes involve 600 volunteers working at the three prison facilities from Bombay to Northland. When a woman is arrested and taken to a prison facility, she is strip searched and then provided with an orange jumpsuit which zips up at the back. Officers then determine some basics – for example whether she has kids that need to be picked up from school etc, so that these details can be covered. She will have a health check and then goes through a two week acclimatisation and assessment period. She will have a total of ten phone numbers that she may call, and calls are recorded. Prison food is basic but nutritious, costing $5 per day per prisoner. Security risk is determined, the highest being maximum security where the inmates remain in their cells for 23 hours each day with one hour of exercise. There are currently no women in this category. Next is High security at 18 hours lock down, Low security at 6 hours lock down and Minimum security at 6 hours lockdown which has mufti and sometimes “self care” accommodation. The key objectives are to increase rates of rehabilitation and reduce the rates of reoffending from its previous 56% down to 25%. Currently the improvement is 12% - half way toward that goal! This is being achieved by addressing health issues, literacy, numeracy, and drug & alcohol addiction. They promote the message “let it only be once” to those entering the system. There are around 100 retired teachers in the volunteer team that are working with inmates to improve literacy and numeracy. There are others teaching yoga, belly dancing and the “stitch” quilting programme. Some of the baby bassinet quilts from these sessions are presented to Middlemore Hospital for the new babies. These programmes help towards promoting the most effective component of rehabilitation – prisoner motivation. 2 CLUB NOTICES 3 4 LETS 5 If you are interested please discuss further with Liz or Brendan. 6 INVITATIONS / DATES TO REMEMBER Rotary Club of Highbrook Changeover Dinner invitation to the Rotary club of highbrook Changeover Tuesday May 19 th Manukau Institute of Technology.
