Dr. Ben Carson wows kids
and adults alike
Dr. Carson, who came to prominence through
his lifesaving surgery to separate twins joined at
the head, spoke to more than 5000 Duffy kids,
teachers and parents about growing up in poverty
in Detroit before having his eyes opened by his
mother when she made him and his brother turn
off the TV and read two books a
week from the Detroit Public Library.
Kids came from far and wide to
hear his messages – some of which
you can read on page two of this
newsletter.
He was welcomed by a powhiri
conducted by children from Wiri
Central School, Bairds Mainfreight
Primary School, Koru School
and Rosebank School. This was
followed by a record-setting
performance of the Duffy song!
That same evening Dr. Carson was
the guest of honour at a fundraising
dinner for Duffy Books in Homes
and the Starship Foundation at the
SKYCITY Convention Centre.
Further highlights of the evening included
a rousing performance by opera singer
Ben Makisi, Duffy kids from Bairds
Mainfreight Primary School singing the
Duffy song, a moving story from Starship
mum Anna Rennie and even a cameo
appearance by the Topp Twins!
Throughout the evening auctions and raffles
were held and more than $210,000 was
raised for Duffy and Starship. The proceeds
will go towards supporting Duffy schools
in need of sponsorship and also to help
rebuild Starship’s Neuroservices and Medical
Specialty Wards – both are causes close
to Dr. Carson’s heart.
Dr. Carson gave a keynote address
and was later interviewed by
Paul Holmes about his life and
achievements.

Warm greetings, to all Duffy Books in
Homes schools, sponsors, role models,
supporters and families
We hope you enjoyed a well-deserved
break during the Christmas and New Year
period and are now settled in after the first
term of the year. The Duffy office has had a
very busy start to the year and things don’t
look like slowing down anytime soon!
You will have already read about the
amazing turnout we had for the events
with Dr. Ben Carson on March 6.
The chance to have Dr. Carson talk to
so many children was one we simply
couldn’t pass up and we’re sure his
inspiring words have resonated with
many of those who attended.
From a financial perspective the fundraising
dinner in conjunction with the Starship
Foundation was a huge success for Duffy.
Our share of the funds raised is enough to
sponsor more than 8000 Duffy kids for an
entire year!
Our thanks go out to all the sponsors who
made both events possible and a special
mention goes to Kevin Drinkwater of
Mainfreight and Michelle Boag who both
gave their time and skills very generously
to help make the visit the success it was.
A big thanks also to the Auckland schools
that assisted with the planning of the
children’s event – we couldn’t have done
it without you!
Term One’s Role Model assemblies
were again successful with dozens of
inspirational people visiting well over
500 schools from Te Hapua to Bluff.
Their messages continue to strike a
chord with kids who we have no doubt
will go on to be lifelong readers.
We’re now looking forward to
Term Two which will see the Scholastic
Caught Being a Good Mum Award and
Government Book Week feature on
the Duffy calendar.

GENERAL MANAGER
FAMILY CORNER
From the Office
Hi parents!
On the front page of this newsletter you will
have seen that Dr. Ben Carson recently
visited New Zealand and spoke to more than
5000 Duffy kids in Auckland.
We thought we’d take the chance to share
some his wisdom with you in this column.
“Here is the treasure chest of the world the public library, or a bookstore.”
“Success is determined not by whether or not you face obstacles,
but by your reaction to them. And if you look at these obstacles as
a containing fence, they become your excuse for failure. If you look
at them as a hurdle, each one strengthens you for the next.”
“I am convinced that knowledge is power - to overcome
the past, to change our own situations, to fight new
obstacles, to make better decisions.”
“Reading activates and exercises the mind. Reading forces the
mind to discriminate. From the beginning, readers have to recognize
letters printed on the page, make them into words, the words into
sentences, and the sentences into concepts. Reading pushes us to
use our imagination and makes us more creatively inclined.”
“The brain can process two million bits of information
per second. It remembers everything you’ve ever seen,
everything you’ve ever heard…so you have to be careful
what you put in there.”
“The doors of the world are opened to
people who can read.”
“We get out of life what
we put into it. The way we
treat others is the way we
ourselves get treated.”
Share market leader gives back
Listed global logistics company
Mainfreight has been one of the darlings
of the New Zealand share market since
it went public in 1996. Coincidentally, its
listing came just a year after it became
one of the founding supporters of Duffy
Books in Homes.
In addition to sponsoring 54 of the 527 schools
involved in the programme, Mainfreight provides a
rent-free office, allowing Duffy to direct more of its
funding towards books which make their way into
the hands of more than 100,000 children in lowincome communities nationwide.
One of Mainfreight’s most anticipated contributions
to the Duffy programme is the annual Mainfreight
Award for Excellence in Attitude.
Each year a senior student in each Duffy school is
awarded a high quality reference book, cup and
certificate signed by Bruce Plested, Mainfreight’s
Executive Chairman. Many schools choose
to make this their major end of year prize for
departing students.
Last year’s book prize was The Complete
Human Body – The Definitive Visual Guide by
Dr. Alice Roberts. The book uses computergenerated illustrations and the latest medical and
microscopic imaging to explain every aspect of
the human body more clearly than ever before.
Representatives from Mainfreight, Daily Freight,
Owens and Chemcouriers are invited to visit
schools and help present the award – an
opportunity which they all relish.
Linda Vagana believes that Mainfreight’s support
has been a cornerstone of the charity’s success.
“Mainfreight’s amazing success as a company
over the years makes them the ideal supporter
of such an award – promoting excellence and
awarding our future young leaders in Duffy schools
nationwide,” she said.

Grandparents recognised at last
Everyone loves taking part in Mother’s
and Father’s Day but it’s easy to forget
that kids often have a lot to thank their
grandparents for too.
Every year Duffy makes a point of rewarding
grandparents who have gone the extra mile.
They may have helped with coaching a sports
team, doing maintenance around the school or
even simply spending extra time helping their
grandchildren with their reading.
Schools in the programme then choose one
lucky grandparent to win the Caught Being a
Good Grandparent Award. Schools choose

their lucky grandparent in many different ways.
Children might write stories or poems about
them or if the choice is too hard then there
might be a lucky draw. In 2011 they were
recognised at a special assembly during the
week of 7 November.
Last year’s award was New Zealand from Above
by David Wall and Philip Temple, published by
New Holland Publishers. The book celebrates
a land of outstanding beauty in a selection
of more than 140 breathtaking aerial images,
representing more than a decade’s work and
hundreds of hours’ flying time. The book is
accompanied by a special certificate.
Linda Vagana, says “With grandparents taking
such an active role in supporting families we
think it’s important that they are recognised,
just like mums and dads.”

Kids get chance to see world’s best book
Duffy kids now have a chance to experience the
pinnacle of literary achievement - when the Duffy
Books in Homes Theatre brings their show to Duffy
primary schools.
Duffy and the Best Book in the World is the latest in a series of
shows by Duffy Theatre – which celebrates its 15th anniversary
this year.
The show is being brought to schools by New Zealand Post – a
long-standing supporter of Duffy and the official
sponsor of Duffy Theatre.
In the show Duffy, the hero of the
story, accompanies Marvel, an old and
much-loved book, through its magical
journey with its various owners;
Emmy, Rocky and Wiremu. Duffy’s little
brother Scruffy provides some hilarious
moments as he tries (unsuccessfully) to
tear Duffy away from his love of reading.

THANK YOU
Dear Linda, Phil and team
On behalf of our students and their families, our staff
and Board of Trustees, I would like to thank everyone
in the Duffy Team for the fabulous programme you
provide for Duffy Schools.
2011 was our third year as a Duffy School and we
are still excited about being part of your amazing
programme.
We loved our Role Model and Duffy Theatre. We were
the Duffy Theatre’s first school performance this year!
Every week we have 24 students who proudly take a
“Caught Being Good” book home to share with their
family.
Thank you also for the opportunity to take part in the
selection process for Book Offer 2 held recently at
Kelvin Road School. It was great to meet Linda, Phil
and Anna.
I look forward to working with you again next year as
Duffy co-ordinator at Manurewa Central School.
Kindest regards and best wishes for a safe and
enjoyable Christmas break.

Hi Phil
Just a quick note to let you
know our kids loved the show,
all ages. What a talented group
of wonderful young people.
Our Duffy books went down a treat, the kids so love
getting them, one child brought a photo to school of
his Duffy books on a shelf in his bedroom. I sent you
some letters from the kids. One of the things they
love most is being able to choose their own books.
Jordan from the Classic Hits radio station was a
great role model speaker, he engaged the kids from
the very first. One of the best we’ve had.

Dear Dr. Ben Carson
Thank you for coming and talking to us. You really
inspired us and taught all of us a really good lesson.
I know that growing up for you was hard, but you
didn’t give up. Now look where you are now. Thank
you for coming to New Zealand and sharing your
story. I know that some of us have watched the
movie and have been so inspired. I also think that
most people are now reading more to reach their
goals just like you did. Once again, thank you for
everything.
