America’s War for Independence – Presented by Ken Miller, Associate Professor of History &
Director of the American Studies Program at Washington College in Chestertown, Maryland.
Ken Miller explores Pennsylvanians’ earliest interactions with their first British prisoners during

LEAVING A LEGACY
This year, CCHS became the
beneficiary of legacy gifts planned
by two stalwart supporters of the
Historical Society. Ms. Evelyn
Brenneman, a lifelong resident of
Boiling Springs and local history
advocate, and Ms. Shirley
Mainello, a passionate educator
and author, both contributed to
CCHS through planned giving.
Their generous forethought
continues to play a vital role in
strengthening the mission of the
Historical Society. Please contact
Executive Director Jason Illari if you
would like to discuss how a legacy gift might best support CCHS’ mission of collecting,
preserving and interpreting Cumberland County history.
The Society is grateful to work with the
Partnership for Better Health as we initiate
our grant-funded Wellness at Work
program in 2015. Walking meetings, a
new bike rack, and farmers market
tokens are in store for CCHS thanks to this
program.
The Cumberland County Historical Society
is very grateful to Mid Penn Bank for its
generous contribution of $2,000 through the
Educational Improvement Tax Credit
Program (EITC). EITC program authorizes
tax credits for businesses that make
contributions to approved organizations. If
your organization would like more
information on this tax credit program
please contact Lynda Mann at
717-249-7610.
We also are grateful to the following
organizations that contributed to the EITC
program.

CROSSROADS TO HISTORY
Jeff Wood has presented the Fall Series at the Society since 2000. He is the
owner of the Whistlestop Bookshop and past-President of the Cumberland
County Historical Society and Bosler Library. Every year the Fall Series has
retold the history of the County from its founding to the present day.
The theme for the 2015 Fall Series is “Life and Death in the Valley.” Jeff will
focus on the ways people have celebrated their lives here (weddings, baptisms,
birthdays) and the ways they wanted to leave legacies (funerals, wills,
monuments) from colonial times to the present. The stories will be drawn from
all over the county.
Reservations required; call 717-249-7610.
Join us for an informative walking tour of Carlisle’s firehouses from the 1800s. We’ll visit six

ring, and talk about dozens of other interesting events.
