Interviewers for the Stanford Historical Society Oral History Program The Stanford Historical Society’s Oral History Program documents the institutional history of the University, with an emphasis on the post-WWII period, through interviews with leading faculty, staff, alumni, trustees, and others. The project furthers the Society's mission to foster and support the documentation, study, publication, dissemination and preservation of the history of the Leland Stanford Junior University. The Society has a number of projects it is currently working on, including the Pioneering Women oral history project, the Institution Builders oral history project, and a project on the Stanford School of Medicine. We also conduct interviews with faculty and staff from across the university on their lives and careers at Stanford. More information about our projects can be found here: http://historicalsociety.stanford.edu/ohistory.shtml The completed oral histories are deposited into the Stanford University Archives and made available online. You can access them through the Stanford Historical Society’s website here: http://historicalsociety.stanford.edu/ohistoryinterviews.shtml Description of Opportunity: We are seeking interviewers for our various oral history projects. Primary tasks include research, interviewing, and transcript editing. Total time spent on an oral history interview varies, but generally interviewers will spend 5-8 hours on research, 2-4 hours on interviewing, and 8-10 hours on editing transcripts. This is typically spread out over 2-3 months. Some weekday daytime availability is needed. Most interviews are of faculty and staff who live on or near campus, so proximity to Stanford is necessary. SHS staff will provide training on all aspects of conducting oral histories, as well as ongoing advice and support as needed. Skills/Experience: An interest in history, particularly Stanford history; excellent listening skills; good communication skills; interviewing and research experience is helpful but not necessary. Contact: If you are interested, please send an email with your resume or a short biography to Charlotte Glasser at [email protected]. Feel free to email or call us with any questions at (650) 725-3332.
