Undergraduate Mathematics Summer Study Group (2015) The Undergraduate Mathematics Summer Study Group is a four to six week program* provides HKU undergraduate students the opportunity to enhance their interest in mathematics and to explore extra‐curricular mathematical context. This program is open to students at all levels, from first‐year students to those who have just completed their undergraduate study. In addition to learning new mathematical knowledge, participants will be given the opportunity to practice the ability to teach mathematics, to use software such as LaTeX to typeset mathematics and to interact with peers and graduate students from our department. Meetings will be conducted in an informal and casual manner encouraging participation and discussions. *the duration will depend on the number of participants Program The study group will begin from early/mid‐June (exact dates and times for the meetings to be confirmed). There will normally be two meetings arranged every week. Students who are interested in joining the study group will need to decide on a topic in consultation with the coordinator at least three weeks before the program starts. Students may choose to work on an individual basis or in a small group (of two to three). Once the topic is fixed, students will need to study the relevant materials and to prepare presentations in the form of mini‐courses (the number of sessions varies from course to course). For each course, students will also have to prepare a set of lecture notes (typesetting in LaTeX). Components: 1. Mini‐Courses (given by the participants) 2. Introductory Talks on Research Topics (given by graduate students) 3. One Mini‐Course (given by the coordinator) Application Please send the application to Dr. Y.M. Chan at [email protected] by May 8, 2015 with subject “Undergraduate Mathematics Summer Study Group (2015)”. Please also include in the email the following information: 1. Name and year 2. Your (intended) major 3. Area(s) of interest Enquiries If you have any questions concerning the program, please feel free to contact the coordinator Dr. Y.M. Chan at [email protected].
