GENERAL INTEREST • AARP SMART DRIVER Geocaching
For students and adults
Do you like treasure hunts? Geocaching
gives you an opportunity to go places you
might not usually go! Search for hidden
treasures using a GPS or smart phone—you
can geocache all over the world! This is a hobby
that is enjoyed by families and adults.
Learn how to “navigate” this awesome new hobby
and find your first treasure! There are hundreds of small
containers hidden! Geocaching leads you on a search for
these small containers (called caches) by using a handheld
GPS or smart phone with a geocaching application.
Class will begin with an hour in the computer lab
exploring the geocaching website and learning how to find
coordinates and how geocaching works. Then we will head
out to search for caches using your new skills.
The caches will be within a seven mile radius
requiring you to provide transportation. Children must
be accompanied by an adult. Bring a handheld GPS or a
smart phone with the geocaching application or contact
Community Education if you need to borrow a GPS.
Come dressed for the weather this class will be held
rain or shine. Due to many different types of GPS units, you
should know how to load coordinates into the unit you
bring. Car GPS units DO NOT work well for geocaching.
Maximum 10 families. Register by May 29.

We’re headed to the Plymouth Playhouse. Dinner is

days of the Latin Mass and meatless Fridays, and remind
us about that good old ruler across the knuckles. Part

Thursday, August 13
Begin with an included buffet lunch at the Pizza Ranch
and then head for the St. Cloud Paramount Theatre for
TRIPS AND TOURS
Don’t Hug Me, We’re Married, the fifth in the popular Don’t
Hug Me series of musical comedies. Set in north woods
Bunyan Bay, Minnesota, plans are on tap for a double
wedding. Before the nuptials transpire, we’ll
have to deal with a surprise visitor, two
un-Hallmark proposals, an over-zealous
wedding planner, a stag and stagette party,
uber-mosquitoes, a quirky male dancer, an
unhappy bridesmaid, a gigantic headache,
a forest ranger, a cheerleader, a rapping
minister and the dreaded wedding dress. One
small hitch before the hitchings, they can’t find anyone
who will pay for the wedding. And who is getting married
to whom? The answer will surprise, shock and tickle
audiences. Will anyone get cold feet? Would someone try
to derail the wedding? What could possibly go wrong? A
lot. Rest assured, nothing will go as wedding-planned in
Bunyan Bay. With 17 original songs including, “The Greatest
Love Song Ever,” “The Marriage Test,” “The Day That Bob
Dylan Was Here,” and “We’re All Gonna Die.”

Students who attend Howard Lake-Waverly-Winsted District 2687 Preschools have the
opportunity to grow emotionally, physically, academically and socially. This is accomplished by
focusing on the Minnesota Early Learning Standards called the Early Childhood Indicators of
Progress.
These six indicators are:
• social and emotional development • approaches to learning
• language and literacy development
• creativity and the arts
• cognitive development
• physical and motor development
HLWW District 2687 Preschool uses Creative Curriculum, the GOLD Assessment System, OWL and Everyday Math
curriculums to achieve positive outcomes for children as they attend preschool.
The Gold Assessment tool is a guideline to drive curriculum and meet the needs of students specified by the indicators.
By evaluating and planning, staff implements each child’s learning experience and helps students reach their full potential
by challenging students.

EARLY CHILDHOOD FAMILY EDUCATION
What is ECFE?
Early Childhood Family Education
ECFE is a place where families
with young children come
together to have fun learning and
get to know other families in the
district. Early Childhood Family
Education (ECFE) is available to
all Howard Lake-Waverly-Winsted
families with children between
the ages of birth to kindergarten
entrance. ECFE is staffed by
licensed teachers and no family is
turned away for inability to pay.
Early Childhood Family Education:
• Believes that parents are a child’s first and foremost
educator.
• Supports parents in their child raising effort.
• Offers information about child development and
alternative parenting techniques.
• Gives children opportunities to discover, play and learn.
• Promotes positive parental attitudes.
• Provides information on community resources available
to parents and children.
In a typical class, families meet once a week for
approximately 90 minutes.
Parents and children spend
approximately 50 minutes
playing and learning
together. The final 40
minutes of class includes
time for parents to talk about
the wonders and challenges
of parenting with others. This
discussion time is facilitated
by a Parent Educator, while an Early Childhood Teacher
spends time teaching the children. In other classes, parents
and children spend the entire time together and discussion
between parents is informal. Come join our classes and
meet other parents with young children in the HLWW
communities.
PAGE 17
Early Childhood Screening
The State of Minnesota requires all children
attending kindergarten in 2015-16 school year, to be
screened. Children attending preschool must also be
screened. HLWW schedules screenings for families with
young children throughout the school year.
Why is screening important?
Screening helps identify children who may benefit
from early childhood services before they enter school
and connects them with the appropriate resources and
programs. If your child has already been screened, he/she
does not need to be screened again.
Who needs to be screened?
The state of Minnesota requires all 3½ to 4 year old
children living in the Howard Lake-Waverly-Winsted
District to be screened before entering Kindergarten.
Screening is most valuable when completed before your
child turns four years old.
What is Early Childhood
Screening?
Screening is a free check
of your child's vision, hearing,
height, weight and development,
as well as a review of her or
his immunization records.
Children are screened by school
district professionals. Your
child will be assessed in three
important developmental areas:
motor skills, concepts, and
communication skills. This is
not an IQ test. It does not rank
children according to scores.
The purpose of screening is
early detection of children's
development, health, and other factors that may interfere
with a child's learning, growth, and development.
How do I make an appointment?
Please contact Jolie Holland at 763-219-2469 if your
child will be attending kindergarten or preschool in 201516 and has not been screened.

to better serve the residents of our communities. In our
continuous effort to update our files, we ask that you
contact the school if you are new to the community or
when you have changes to your household information.
Being on the school census ensures you will receive

Destination Imagination
Coming this fall for Grades K-12
Destination Imagination is open to students grades
K-12. Grades K-2 are non-competitive teams and grades
3-12 compete in tournaments. Teams are composed of 2-7
people each.
Please talk with your students about this great
opportunity! There will be an informational meeting in
the early fall. Any questions please contact Tanya Remer at
[email protected]
Programs are project-based and teach the creative
process from imagination to innovation. The goal is to help
student teams learn to be creative in every aspect of their
lives.
The Challenge program is the most popular. At the
start of the season, teams choose one of seven Challenges.
After weeks spent creating, developing and practicing
their solutions, they go to a local tournament. Top-scoring
teams advance to state or country tournaments. The top
level of the tournament is Global Finals—the world’s
largest celebration of creativity.
The Destination Imagination program encourages
teams of learners to have fun, take risks, focus and frame
challenges while incorporating STEM (science, technology,
engineering, and mathematics), the arts and service
learning. The participants learn patience, flexibility,
persistence, ethics, respect for others and their ideas, and
the collaborative problem solving process.

HLWW MEADA
Schools in Wright County are a part of the MEADA
(methamphetamine education and drug awareness) coalition
of Wright County. Howard Lake-Waverly-Winsted is a member
of this coalition. MEADA helps schools or communities with
getting the word out about the importance of education
regarding the use of drugs and underage drinking, as well as
other problems facing our youth, adults and communities.
Grants are awarded for projects that relay this message – in the
year 2014, 17,087 youth and adults were served by programs
that MEADA helped with manpower and grants. For more
information about MEADA, visit the website at www.meada.net.
Howard Lake-Waverly-Winsted
Adult Volunteer Program
As the 2014-2015 school year ends, our schools again have
been very fortunate to have many parents and community
members who have volunteered their time to our students
and staff. Our program has grown in needs and hours given
each year. We are thankful for all the help we receive. It is
so important for students to know that their parents and
community believe how important education is. Our volunteers
have shown that in their dedication to our schools. For more
information about the program, contact Pam Henry-Neaton at
763-658-4424, ext.3168.
