Jonathan Esling kicked off the meeting by greeting new
and prospective members. It was great to see 5 new faces
in the crowd checking out what we are about. We had the
privilege to experience the talents and stories of guest
speaker Nick Monk who not only took us on a journey of his
photography but also treated us to some of his photo
editing techniques. In our 6 Favourite Images segment of
the meeting club members Chris Wright, Patricia Routley
(Trish) and John Darby highlighted their favourite pieces of
work. Lisa Kean did an excellent job of holding the "Print
Challenge Fort" in Trish and Bob Chesterman's absense.
Phil O'Halloran gave members an update on the exhibition
held in March and presented some gift vouchers to the
successful recipients of People's Choice awards. Andrew
Fuller provided his usual entertaining segment of Digital
Challenge results for the previous month, however his
catch up of the catch up from the meeting before for the
meeting before that had to be held over again because the
file he thought he had turned out not to be the one he
thought he had. Keep an eye out for it in the next
newsletter or you can see it on the Challenges Facebook
Page.
PRINT CHALLENGE - APRIL MEETING
April's Print Competition is for
the Enthusiasts group. Trish &
Bob are bringing two big

I think I?ve tried most of them! The M&M?s (mono and macro) are probably what I?ve done most of, I am currently trying to develop my
?street? photography cred.
How long have you been a member of the HPS?
9 years or so
What?s your earliest memory of being interested in photography?
When I was a student, with a couple of friends we got quite serious. We could only afford a basic system, it was all manual.
What?s your proudest photography moment?
My first exhibition, with a group of friends (also fellow HPS members). A lot of work and a lot of fun.
Which photographer?s works inspire you most?
For different reasons Steve McCurry, Tina Modotti, Sebastiao Salgado, and Annie Leibovitz?s private work.
Besides your camera, what?s your most important piece of camera equipment you don?t like to be without?
Filters
What?s your most embarrassing photography moment?
Being asked to take portraits of fellow employees for the company?s annual report, after the commercial photographer stuffed up a
couple.
Most favourite photography location?
Anywhere with good light, where I can get lost for a couple of hours with just the camera. And B&H in New York.
What?s the next stage pf your photographic journey/ learning you?d like to accomplish?
In street photography, getting the ?decisive moment?.

GUEST SPEAKER - NICK MONK
We were treated to a presentation by landscape
photographer N ick M onk at M arch's Club
M eeting. N ick started taking photos in 2003. H e
bushwalked through school and wanted to capture
what he saw. H e watched a friend taking a photo
of a river and this spurred N ick into landscape
photography in a serious way. Just a few
highlights in his photography career so far include
an exhibition in 2012 with Rob Blakers and
Wolfgang Glowacki. H aving his work published
in the book "Tasmania - a visual journey". A
recent exhibition at the Long Gallery with 18 other
photographers. H aving his work in the Aurora
Chasers H andbook. N ick's passion for the Tarkine
has seen him images being used in conservation
work through the Bob Brown Foundation.
N ick's other career is with the Tasmania Police.
H e joined them in 2000 and moved into the
position of Forensic Examiner in 2009. H e
included some of his milder photos from work to
demonstrate photographic principles he includes in
his line of work.
Some landscape locations of his photos he had in
his presentation included:
Glaziers Bay, H uon River at Franklin, N orth West
Bay River, below Wellington Falls, Tasman
Peninsula, Cape Raoul, Lake Tahune, Frenchman's
Cap, Remarkable Caves, Secret Falls, Donaldson
River in the Tarkine and the remote Tarkine Coast,
4
south tip of Bruny Island, Beckett Falls in the
Tarkine, Pieman River, H orton River and Cole
Point just to name a few.
N ick utilses filters in capturing his landscape shots.
These include Graduated N D filters (Lee),
Polarisers and Solid N D Filters (B+W).
N ick highlighted two images that required him to
think outside the box when taking them. The first
was a night shot from Bellerive of the M OFO
lights. H e wanted to get the foreground and the
lights in one shot however by the time the
foreground was lit up in a 30 second shot it would
have over exposed the lights so he used a black
cloth over the top of the for the first 22 seconds
and removed it for the last 8 seconds to capture
the bright lights.
To lighten the foreground of one of his Aurora
shots without over doing it, he used the thickness
of 5- 6 sheets of white A4 paper. H e holds this
over his head whilst shining a torch on it and
moves it over the foreground to get it evenly lit.
H e then moved on to demonstrate processing one
of his images in Photoshop. H e started processing
the image in Lightroom and finished in Photoshop
usings Luminosity M asks.
The Club and its members thank N ick very much
for giving his time to share his work and skills
with us.

CAPE QUEEN ELIZABETH
& MARS BLUFF 28th March 2015
by Jenny Schorta
A superb day greeted us on March 28th. Eight of us caught the ferry across to Bruny Island and
embarked on the walk (Bob Linacre, Andrew Barrie, Marilyn Boyle, Donna Summers, Reg Ashman,
Lisa Kean, Charles Chadwick, Robbie McKay and Roger Dahlberg plus me). The first part of the walk
follows along the air stip, at the end of the airship a beautiful view right down the neck appears.
We were then lucky with mother nature arranging for the tide to be at its low so we were able to
walk around the bluff on the beach instead of over the hill. Of course being Photographers we got
way laid at the point and spent the next hour or so photographing the rock formations that make
up Mars Bluff. Had lunch at Mars Bluff then headed off on the rest of the walk along the beach and
up onto the Cape. Plenty of Jack Jumpers were encountered but no one got bitten. Once at the top
a magnificent 360 degrees view was around us. We could see right over to Tasman Island as the
day was so clear. We again spent approx another hour taking photos from the Cape before
beginning the walk back to the car park hoping to catch the 5.30pm ferry. We all managed to get
back to the cars on time and catch the ferry - a fantastic day was had by all with just a few minor
issues (hope your feeling better now Marilyn) and well deserved ice-cream was enjoyed by most
while waiting for the ferry to arrive. Great weather, beautiful location, top company, etc what more
could a bunch of photographers want? ? ..

PHOTOSHOP WORKSHOP - BEGINNERS
On Sunday 29th March, 21 workshop
participants were treated to the skills, talents
and humour of fellow club members Suellen
Cook, Phil Hallam and Andrew Fuller. Not
only was it yet another great opportunity to
get to mingle with other club members, it
was a friendly, relaxed and informal
educational experience. We explored some
of the basic tools, layers and masks,
sharpening, levels and histograms. The trio
supplied some extensive workshop notes
that gave the participants the ability to take
them home and translate into practice on
photos of their own. The Club, and especially
the workshop participants would like to say a
MASSIVE thanks to Suellen, Andrew and Phil
for the time you have put into putting these
workshops on, the notes you have produced
and for sharing your skills, knowlegde and
experience with us. Thank you also to Lisa
Kean for the yummy cup cakes.
